    On the measurement of Fragmentation

    No full text
In this paper we propose a new party-system fragmentation measure as equivalent number of parties that fully takes into account the pivotal power of parties. The novel approach we adopt in the method of construction for an index of fragmentation allows us to take advantage of the theory of generalized means. We first construct the (class of) quasi-arithmetic mean(s) with Banzhaf power weight function for the party sizes and then, given the average size, we derive an equivalent-number of parties.Fragmentation, Effective number of parties, Voting power, Effective average size, Generalized means

Synopsis Each creator transgresses norms and undoes boundaries. If human action is by definition creative, the soaring-up towards the height of creativity remains, however, a relatively rare phenomenon. Up to now, only few studies have examined in interrelationship the different levels of creative experience. Through the anthropological lens used here -one particularly suited to the cross-cultural approach required by this research focus-it was possible to bring together the words and views of experts and masters who have devoted their entire lives to the creative state and process. Driven more by the quest for meaning than by mere analytical exposition, this study aims at an understanding of the depths (as opposed to the simple surface layers) of creative experience. In a fusion between researcher and researched, this study has tested its "subject matter" in a way leading its author to test himself-as-(subject)-matter. As the writing unfolded, this doctoral thesis itself became an experience of the creative process, one mirroring the model of creation highlighted here. Approximately twenty non-directive interviews were conducted for this study. The conceptual categories derived from these are examined for the qualitative insights they offer. Based on these categories and as a stepping-stone towards broader theorisation, the present study develops a model of the creative state and process. This study contradicts the often-alleged radical opposition between Chinese and Western thought: its findings instead reveal a pattern of creative action common to China and the West. Like the art of Chinese calligraphy, taijiquan reveals itself a valuable doorway to uncovering this shared pattern. Precisely through its focus on taijiquan, this study hopes to contribute to the undoing of the myth of alterity. This thesis foregrounds that fundamentally, all genuine form of creation leads to a profound transformation/refashioning of the creating individual. However, this claim is made without reductionism: though all experienced creative beings master the art of entering and abiding in the creative state, a part of it remains mysterious and elusive. Thus, beyond recurring and converging patterns, each creative path also remains individually unique in the end.Résumé Tout créateur est un transgresseur de normes, un destructeur de frontières.

Social Bricolage and Social Business Model in Uncertain Contexts: First Insights from Minor Cultural Heritage

    No full text
Most social entrepreneurship organizations (SEOs) face difficulty acquiring the resources they need to start and growth (Austin et al., 2006; Zahra et al., 2009). Bricolage has traditionally represented one of the most adopted option used by SEOs (Desa & Basu, 2013; Linna, 2013). Much of the previous research into the role of bricolage framework in SEOs explore how this process is developed (Di Domenico et al., 2010) and how it helps SEOs to achieve their social mission (Mair & Marti, 2009). Building on recent literature (Di Domenico et al., 2010; Desa & Basu, 2013; Bacq et al., 2015; Zollo et al., 2018), the recent concept of social bricolage is an entrepreneurial opportunity to address emergent social needs, in contexts characterized by resource scarcity, high levels of uncertainty in economic environments and the seasonality of activities (e.g. Langevang et al. 2012), such as minor (often abandoned and not fully exploited) cultural heritage. Cultural SEOs able to respond to the social need for a broader cultural heritage consumption, to make abandoned sites available to citizens and tourists, filling a welfare gap (Pol & Ville, 2009; Murray et al., 2010; Caulier-Grice et al., 2012). Special attention has been given to topics such as community engagement, stakeholder participation, and maintaining external legitimacy, all within the particularly resource-constrained area of SEOs (Gundry et al., 2011a; Gundry et al., 2011b). As known, a great part of the enormous Italian cultural heritage lacks a careful management and enhancement processes. The inadequacy of the public model and the non-profitability of the private one in the management and protection of the minor cultural heritage has triggered many organizations trying to defend and manage this heritage against from neglect. Despite the crisis of both public and private profit-driven models, in the last years, new initiatives arose, and new projects are designed to meet this social need, drawing on the domain of social entrepreneurship. Building on these considerations, this study aims to investigate the main features of social bricolage in cultural SEOs, the sustainability of this initiatives and the social dimensions able to produce social innovation. Our analysis is part of an ongoing research “Napoli Attiva Project” on new business model in the development of the so-called minor and abandoned cultural heritage in Naples (Italy)

Advancing Active Thermography for NDT: The Role of Standardization

    No full text
Infrared thermography, particularly its active form, is increasingly used in various industries in non-destructive testing (NDT). To support its broader adoption, structured standardization efforts have been developed within CEN/TC 138/WG11 and coordinated with ISO. Key standards—such as EN 16714, EN 17119, and EN 17501—define principles, procedures, and equipment requirements. Current activities include finalizing the draft on induction thermography, revising EN 17119, and developing new projects on optical lock-in, laser weld inspection, and thermal diffusivity. Standardization enhances comparability, reliability, and certification, making thermography a robust and scalable solution within the global NDT framework
