Designing the fog:towards an intranet of things
\u3cp\u3eThe Fog of Things, ubiquitous computing in local contexts, is a reality now. The Internet of Things has arrived, although users use and perceive it rather as Internet of Thing [sic!]. Data and information flows vertically, not horizontally through the connected Everyday and promises of convenience and quality of life are at the mercy of the viability of business models and the benevolence of multi-national commercial entities. This position paper poses that things and connectedness can also be re-thought; products and services can be designed differently: bottom-up and with stronger ideals in place. Systems of connected things can be understood as horizontal autonomous networks of nodes, Intranets, that do not or only seldom connect to external entities for the exchange of data. This paper explains how to conceptualize these systems, proposes the use of system properties to address new design challenges, and concludes with an outlook on future work.\u3c/p\u3
Mathias Niendorf. Das Grossfuertentum Litauen : Studien zur Nationsbildung in der Fruehen Neuzeit (1569-1795) : recenzija
Recenzijoje yra analizuojamas Mathiaso Niendorfo darbas, kuriame svarbiausias dėmesys yra skiriamas politinės tautos temai. Tokia tema yra dar mažai tyrinėta, bet pastaruoju metu jai skiriamas vis didesnis dėmesys. Recenzijoje yra nurodoma, kad M. Niendorfo darbas LDK istoriografijai svarbus naujų probleminių temų įvedimu. Savo darbe M. Niendorfas pristato LDK istorijos raidą po Liublino unijos iki 1795 m. Po to pradeda detaliai analizuoti problemą. Pažymima, kad naujumu labai išsiskiria ketvirtas M. Niendorfo darbo skyrius. Jis skirtas aptarti, kokį vaidmenį turėjo religingumas to laikotarpio tautos formavimuisi. This subject has been little examined yet, but it has recently received an increasing attention. The review points out that the work by Mathias Niendorf is significant to historiography of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, since it introduces new problematic topics. In his work, Mathias Niendorf presents the development of the history of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania after the Union of Lublin until 1795. Afterwards, he begins a detailed analysis of the problem. It should be stressed that chapter 4 of the work by Mathias Niendorf is clearly distinguished by its novelty. It discusses the role of religiosity in the formation of the nation in that period. In this topic, the author gives close attention to cults of saints, considering them an integration factor for a political nation. He also highlights that cults represent one of the major factors in the formation of a political community. It should be noted that Mathias Niendorf manages to use traditional subjects of historiography to the benefit of the analysis of his topic, although sometimes this can be considered to be hypotheses only. It should be emphasised that other chapters of the book praise myths of the descent of nations and rulers, and the legal structure, but underestimate the language that was held to be the main feature of nationality. The author formulates one more new thesis. He states that representatives of not only the caste of noblemen were a constituent part of the political nation; however, it does not mean that this statement is valid. It is worthwhile stressing that the author’s ability to “squeeze” the maximum out of historiography is a big advantage of the book. It should be highlighted that the research topic, which is new, interesting and encourages studies on nationality, makes the work valuable
E-COmate: What’s Your Non-consumption?
Abstract. Most people lack awareness and hence understanding about how food-related behavior affects the environment. This commonly results in unsustainable food-related decisionmaking, such as foodwaste. We pro-pose E-COmate, an augmented bin that measures the weight of food waste through a USB postal scale, a bin and a Raspberry Pi with a Wi-Fi mod-ule, and give direct feedback to its users through a tablet by visualizing metaphorical units of the weighted food waste. We intend explore the use of E-COmate in redirecting behavior through transparency, visibility and social influence strategies like social comparison. In this paper, we present our concept, implementation, design rationale and plan of research which we expect to provide insights into the potential of eco-feedback integrated in smart home technology for food sustainability

Teaching Data-Enabled Design: Student-led Data Collection in Design Education
[EN] Designers are increasingly engaging with data practices in their day-to-day work as design practice becomes increasingly connected. To facilitate this practice, design education needs to evolve and embrace data design. In this paper we introduce a Master-level elective course around the Data-enabled Design methodology. This challenge-based learning activity aims to teach how to use data as a creative material in addressing a real-life design challenge from selected industrial partners. In this article we demonstrate how our master students learn how to prototype, conduct data-enabled interviews, adapt their prototypes, and introduce design interventions via a multi-step approach, leveraging their growing knowledge and skills around contextual data. We share how we use a strong collaboration with our industrial partners and a predefined data infrastructure to help our students use data for sharing valid research findings and presenting experiential interventions.Noortman, R.; Lovei, P.; Funk, M.
