Yes prime manipulator : a descriptive study of a Chinese translation of British political humour

    No full text
This is a descriptive study of Chang Nam Fung's Chinese translation of Jonathan Lynn and Antony Jay's Yes Prime Minister, a text characterized by British political humour. Adopting a target-oriented approach, it aims primarily to uncover the regularities which mark the relationships between function, process and product of the translated text, thus adding to the limited inventory of case studies in the field. Targeted mainly towards readers in mainland China, the translation was done at a time (1987-1992) when the political scene in the People's Republic went through cycles of repression and relaxation in the face of a democratic movement, while the translation tradition remained one that upheld the primacy of the original -- a poetics that is determined by the ideological concept of loyalty. Working under the constraints of the ideological and poetological norms dominant in China, the translator nevertheless wished to produce a text with artistic value and a potential to function as a political satire in the Chinese context, posing a challenge to those norms. This skopos has determined the use of manipulative strategies in the translation process, The translation product is thus found to have been overdetermined by the interplay of a large number of factors besides the source text: socio-political conditions, literary and translation traditions, and the translator's poetics and ideology. Finally, the findings are brought to bear on a number of translation theories, especially Polysystem theory and other cultural theories of translation in whose frameworks the study has been carried out. An augmented version of the polysystem hypothesis is proposed, the gist of which is that the political and the ideological polysystems, each consisting of competing systems, normally assume central positions in the macro-polysystem of culture, issuing norms that influence norms originating from other polysystems, and that translation activities are governed by norms originating from various polysystems. It is hoped that this tentative 'macro-polysystem hypothesis, after refinement by theorists and test by researchers, can better accommodate investigations into the role of the translator together with other socio-cultural factors involved in translation, especially the power relations

    China at 60: Global-Local Interaction - Introduction

    No full text
The year 2009 marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC). On its formation, the PRC leadership ought to achieve a 10ng-l1eld ambit ion to build a pro perous and strong Chinese state that could command respect and recognition among .its international peers. Previous studies on China have generally used the year 1979 as a watershed of its transformation from the Mao era to Deng's economic reform. This disjuncture between pre-1979 China and post-1979 China has dominated scholarly attention in their analyses of the role of political leadership in social and economic developments in these two separate periods. Examples include Loren Brandt and Thomas Raw ki, Kjeld Erik Brodsgaard and Zheng Yongnian, David Goodman, Doug Guthrie, Nichola Lardy, Li Cheng, Peter Nolan, Cze law Tubilewicz, Gordon Whit , as well as Dali L. Yang and Zhao Litao. There has been considerable work done by scholars such as Nick Knight and Zheng Yongnian on China's international linkages, particularly on its transformation in coping with the external forces of globalisation. They argue that while globalisation generates both opportunities and risks for China, opportunities outweigh the risks and China has been using a flexible approach to cope with globalisation. China's engagement with the outside world intersected with its internal development strategies in a host of complex ways over the course of these 60 years. With this in mind, a dual theme - change-and-continuity and global-local interactions on China's development - is adopted to assess the historical development of China's policies in various issue areas in the past 60 years. Focus is on the domestic impacts of China's previous and present engagement with the world, the global implications of China's reform efforts and growing power, and the long-lasting uniqueness of this non-European rising or re-emerging nation. What distinguishes this edited volume from others is its explicit emphais on the external factors that have impacted on China's internal development over the entire 60 years of the PRe's existence. The focus is on how China's interactions with global forces since 1949 have impacted on its domestic and foreign policy agenda and its changes and continuities. By arguing that one cannot have a proper understanding of present-day China without a sound knowledge of its past, this volume aims to explore the interactions between China and the world over the course of the Communist Party rule since 1949 and the impact of these interactions on China's domestic development

The mosaic embroidery Rung-Bai presents to the degree of Yi Dynasty. Early in the Yi Dynasty Fung-Bai used mainly from young Rak Ye Je of Ming Dynasty in China. The Fung-Bai begun to discuss at first January in Sejong 28, but it did not constituted. At Dec 2nd year of Dan Jong, again it discussed, first formally it constituted. Gradually, Eyun San Gun time we have used the special mosaic in Korean colours and Korean figures. There were deers, pigs, crows in embroidery by photographic profiles. But later document was not the material of Fung-Bai, but then we investigate to the photographic profiles on changing process in the theme. We investigated the Fung-Bai of Yi Dynasty, early we are influenced by Ming Dynasty, but later we have a special charactristics in ourselves. Then Korean Fung-Bai made a difference from China. That the Fung-Bai constitutied for Yi Dynasty political order, did not well proceeded. But Fung-Bai was a remarkable influence to the history of Korean Art.目次 = 0 Ⅰ. Variations on the Author

    No full text
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Position estimation of mobile robots based on coded infrared signal transmission

    No full text
A system based on coded infrared signal transmission for the estimation of position of mobile robots in a structured environment is reported. Particular emphasis is placed on the polar coordinate arrangement in which signals are sent from the transmitters situated at the corners of the boundaries of operation. A multisensor system, strategically situated onboard the robot, has been found to improve the accuracy of the position estimation substantially. The information detected by the sensors is suitably processed to calculate the central position of the robot geometrically. The algorithms for the position calculations and the operational strategy are presented. This system forms the basis for the coordination and cooperation philosophy of multiple mobile robots sharing the same environment and performing cooperative or competitive tasks
