Between the gothic novel and the folk tales : demythologisation of Lafcadio Hearn's "Kwaidan : stories and studies of strange things"
Praca rzuca światło na swoistą mistyfikację dokonaną przez Hearna, pokazując, w jak dużym stopniu czerpał on z literatury zachodniej przy tworzeniu Kwaidanu. Żeby uzmysłowić czytelnikowi, jak wiele elementów i symboli zawartych w zbiorze pochodzi spoza kultury japońskiej, książka zestawia go z dziełami literatury światowej współczesnej pisarzowi. The main objective of the book Between the Gothic Novel and the Folk Tales – Demythologisation of Lafcadio Hearn’s ’Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things’ is to examine the title collection of stories in the context of concretisation understood as a phenomenon interlinked with the relation between the cultural codes of the author and the recipient. The book reveals that the tales contained in the analysed collection are not original stories from Japanese folklore, but only a testimony of their perception by Lafcadio Hearn. The work includes the writer’s biography and his potential literary inspirations. Both of these elements are juxtaposed with an outline description of the historical period during which Hearn lived in Japan. This approach allows for presenting the contrast between Hearn’s ideas about Japan and the prevailing cultural and political climate of the country. The last part of the thesis focuses on the analysis of individual stories from the collection, divided into six categories based on the similarity of supernatural themes occurring in them. The stories are compared with records from traditional Japanese folklore, as well as the corresponding threads from Gothic and horror literature from the 18th and 19th centuries. In this way it is shown to what extent Hearn – dwelling in the creativespace between the two cultural traditions – concretised the Japanese folk stories he heard, and to what extent he retained their original meaning. The study confi rms the main research thesis that the stories from Kwaidan should be treated as the original creations of Lafcadio Hearn, partly inspired by Japanese folklore, corresponding to the cultural convention of enchantment and fascination with the Orient
Our gods no longer wear spandex : divinity in the series "The Wicked + Divine"
W dyskursie naukowym często występuje porównanie komiksowych bohaterów do bogów i bóstw, ponieważ związane jest to z potrzebą kreacji nowych idoli. W swoim komiksie The Wicked and the Divine Kieron Gillen i Jamie McKelvie posuwają się o krok dalej, czyniąc jego tematem nowy panteon, ukształtowany na miarę naszych czasów. Twórcy nie kreują nowych bóstw, wykorzystują istniejące panteony i oblekają ich przedstawicieli w nowe ciała za sprawą reinkarnacji. W niniejszym artykule rozważona zostanie rola boskości i jej miejsce we współczesnym świecie. Poprzez analizę porównawczą głównej serii The Wicked and the Divine z dwoma zeszytami specjalnymi, prezentującymi sytuacje bóstw z lat dwudziestych XX wieku oraz początków XIX wieku, uwypuklone zostaną różnice w znaczeniu przypisywanym bóstwom w poszczególnych epokach. Podjęta zostanie również kwestia tego, jakie formy przyjmują bóstwa w kolejnych reinkarnacjach i wpływ tego zjawiska na ich umiejscowienie w społeczeństwie. The Comparison between the comic books’ superheroes and gods often appears in the scientific discourse. This phenomenon is linked to the human need for creating new idols. In their comic book titled The Wicked and the Divine, Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie are going one step further and decide to create a whole new pantheon, designed to fit our century. Creators did not design new gods, they used various pantheons and reincarnated them in new, different bodies. In this article, I will be considering the role of divinity and its place in the modern world. In order to achieve this, I will use comparative analysis between the main series of The Wicked and the Divine and two special one-shots - first set in the twenties of the twentieth century, second in the beginning of the nineteenth century - to highlight the differences in the role of gods and divinity in different period of time. The article will also concentrate on the form of the bodies that the gods gain due to the reincarnation, and the impact of this phenomenon on the place that they take in society
