    This collection contains letters and postcards to the historian and professor Hans Liebeschütz after his arrival in England in 1939. The collection contains: correspondence from Arnold Berney in Jerusalem (April to October 1939); correspondence from Ernst Grumach in Berlin (April to August 1939); correspondence from Richard Fuchs in London and Marlborough College, April to November 1939. There is also a letter from Hans Liebeschütz on University of Liverpool stationary (where he was then a lecturer) to Robert Weltsch (Feb. 1948).The historian Hans Liebeschütz was born 1893 in Hamburg, Germany. He embarked in a career as a teacher of medieval history and Latin medieval literature, both at the high school level and at the University of Hamburg. When the Nazis dismissed him in 1936, he taught medieval history and Latin at the Lehranstalt für die Wissenschaft des Judentums. He emigrated to England in 1939, where he joined his family who had emigrated earlier. In 1946, he was granted a lecturer position at the University of Liverpool. He also wrote about Judaism beyond the Middle Ages. Hans Liebeschütz was a member of the executive board of the Leo Baeck Institute London from time of inception.
