This is a letter from Dr. Yang Fu-lu, president of the Beijing Institute of Physical Education (now Beijing Sport University) to Dr. Frank S. Falcone, president of Springfield College, dated July 10, 1989. The letter is concerning the events in Tienanmen Square in Beijing in the summer of 1989.Beijing Sport University was organized and established as the Central Institute of Physical Education (sport) in 1953 with the help of Professor Xu Yingchao, Springfield College graduate of the class 1938. The name of the university changed to Peking (Beijing) Institute of Physical Culture (physical education) in 1956 and renamed Beijing Sports University in 1993. The first agreement signed by Springfield College and the Beijing Sport University was on September 25, 1981, which provided pathways for collaboration and exchange of faculty and students

Online Iterative Adaptive Dynamic Programming Approach for Solving the Zero-Sum Game for Nonlinear Continuous-Time Systems with Partially Unknown Dynamics
The current study presents an online iterative adaptive dynamic programming approach to resolve the zero-sum game (ZSG) for nonlinear continuous-time (CT) systems containing a partially unknown dynamic. The Hamilton-Jacobian-Issacs (HJI) equation is solved along the state trajectory according to the value function approximation and the policy improvement online. Relaxed dynamic programming is utilized to ensure the algorithm’s convergence. Model and costate networks were established to conduct the method. Scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM): Study of the adsorption and desorption of hydrogen on platinum electrodes in Na2SO4 solution (pH=7)
Hydrogen adsorption and desorption at polycrystalline platinum electrodes in a neutral Na2SO4 solution were studied with a scanning electrochemical microscope. Experiments were carried out with the tip-substrate voltammetry mode, where the faradaic current flowing to the tip is recorded while cycling the potential of the substrate, and with the tip-substrate chronoamperometry mode, where the tip faradaic current is recorded as a function of time following the application of a potential step to the substrate. The tip current was made pH sensitive by holding the tip potential in a region where a pH- dependent reaction occurs. Proton reduction was used to monitor pH decrease, whereas platinum oxide formation was selected to detect pH increase. The results showed that a transient pH decrease as high as 2.3 pH units exists during hydrogen desorption and that a great pH increase occurs during hydrogen adsorption. The mechanisms of hydrogen adsorption and desorption were analysed by comparing tip current vs. substrate potential curves, which reflect the exchange of H+ between the adsorbed layer and the solution, with substrate current vs. substrate potential curves, which reflect the exchange of electrons between the adsorbed layer and the electrode. Practical application of on-line partial discharge monitoring technique on 500kV shunt reactor
Considering the damage mechanism of oil-impregnated paper insulation in power transformers, shunt reactors and other high voltage electrical apparatus caused by partial discharge, a concept of “destructive partial discharge” is introduced in this paper. The intensity of this discharge is regarded as several thousands pico-coulomb (pC) and may cause the insulation a fatal damage. An oil-paper insulation is usually able to withstand this type of partial discharge for a period of time prior to failure. This provides engineers a time window to detect it. This paper describes an on-line partial discharge monitoring system for 500kV shunt reactors. The commission results from 3 single-phase shunt reactors either connected or disconnected to the grid showed that the on-line partial discharge detecting system has a high noise immunising ability. Two years later after the installation, a pre-warning signal was received from one shunt reactor indicating the existence of an intermittent discharge. The acoustic emission system located its position at the low end of the high voltage bushing in the oil. Dissolved gasses analysis (DGA) in the oil suggested the presence of partial discharge, as acetylene (C2H2) was as high as 20ppm. The formation and reduction of oxides on polycrystalline platinum were studied in a neutral solution with a scanning electrochemical microscope (SECM). Experiments were carried out with tip-substrate voltammetry where the faradaic current flowing to the tip is recorded while cycling the potential of the substrate, and with tip-substrate chronoamperometry where the faradaic tip current is recorded against time following the application of a potential step to the substrate. The tip current was made pH sensitive by holding the tip potential in a region where a pH dependent reaction occurs. Hydrogen evolution was used to probe pH decreases, oxygen evolution was used for the detection of pH increases and Pt oxide formation was used to detect both pH increases and decreases. The results showed that oxide formation occurs in two stages, each involving the transfer of electrons and the release of protons into the solution. During the first stage the release of H+ precedes the transfer of electrons, while in the second stage H+ release and electron transfer proceed simultaneously. Results are analysed in terms of the formation of PtOH during stage 1 and PtO during stage 2. However stage 2 behaves differently under slow potential changes and the release of protons lags behind the transfer of electrons. This is interpreted as the result of a place-exchange mechanism from PtOH to HOPt prior to stage 2, followed by the oxidation of HOPt to OPt during stage 2. Similarly, oxide reduction was found to occur in two stages, each involving the transfer of electrons and the consumption of protons. During the first stage, the consumption of H+ precedes the transfer of electrons. The results suggest that during the transfer of electrons, protons diffuse from the outer layer of the oxide (OPt) into the inner layer to form HOPt. For the second stage results are analysed in terms of a place exchange mechanism from HOPt to PtOH running in parallel with the consumption of H+, followed by a surface reduction from PtOH2+ to Pt metal

Infinite Dimensional Symmetries of Self-Dual Yang-Mills Theories.
We construct infinite dimensional symmetries of the Chalmers-Siegel action describing the self-dual sector of non-supersymmetric Yang-Mills. The symmetries are derived by virtue of a canonical transformation between the Yang-Mills fields and new fields that map the Chalmers-Siegel action to a free theory which has been used to construct a Lagrangian approach to the MHV rules. We describe the symmetries of the free theory in a quite general way which are an infinite dimensional algebra in the group algebra of isometries.
We dimensionally reduce the symmetries of the action to write down symmetries of the Hitchin system and further, we extend the construction to the supersymmetric, self-dual theory.
We review recent developments in the approach to calculating N=4 Yang-Mills scattering amplitudes using symmetry arguments. Super-conformal symmetry and the recently discovered dual super-conformal symmetry have been shown to be related as a Yangian algebra and moreover, anomalous terms appearing in their action on amplitudes lead to deformations of the generators which gives rise to recursive relationships between amplitudes
