Dr. Fu Manchu, the archetypal supervillain invented by English author Sax Rohmer in the 1910s and featured in countless Hollywood portrayals from the 1920s to the 2000s, has been described by scholars such as Ruth Mayer as the embodiment of Yellow Peril, an ideological construction of East Asia that William F. Wu regards as so pervasive within Western culture as to fundamentally shape both public perception and political policy.
Perhaps fittingly, Fu Manchu has not been portrayed in any major film production by a Chinese or East Asian performer. Instead, the character has been portrayed by white men engaging in makeup-assisted racial mimicry (a practice explored in David Henry Hwang’s 2007 play Yellow Face). This fact formed the backdrop for Eelyn Lee’s digital short, Casting Fu Manchu, for which Lee invited East and Southeast Asian performers to submit audition self-tapes of sides taken directly from classical Hollywood films featuring the character. These self-tapes, which featured prominently within the performance itself, created an opportunity for performers to subvert and reappropriate a character whose legacy can be seen as directly connected to the current resurgence in anti-Chinese sentiment

No full text<p>(A) Hh-dependent transcriptional activation was measured by activity of a <i>ptc</i>-luciferase reporter normalized to constitutively expressed control <i>Renilla</i> luciferase. Cells were stimulated with or without conditioned medium containing HhN, the N-terminal signaling domain of the Hh protein. (B) Identification of phosphorylation sites in Su(fu). A schematic diagram of Su(fu) is shown and phosphoserine residues identified by mass spectrometry in endogenous Su(fu) purified from HhN-stimulated <i>Drosophila</i> cl-8 cells are marked with “P”. (C) Western blot analysis of Ala or Glu substitution of Su(fu) phosphoresidues. (D) Endogenous <i>Su(fu)</i> mRNA was targeted using dsRNA corresponding to the 3’ untranslated region (3’UTR), and expression constructs encoding Su(fu) but lacking the 3’UTR sequence were used to test for function of Su(fu) variants, with pathway activity measured as in (A). Regulation of Ci and Su(fu) nuclear import in Drosophila
No full textAbstractThe Hedgehog (Hh) signal transduction pathway plays a central role in the development of invertebrates and vertebrates. While much is known about the pathway, the role of Suppressor of fused (Su(fu)), a component of the pathway's signaling complex has remained enigmatic. Previous studies have linked Su(fu) to the cytoplasmic sequestration of the zinc finger transcription factor, Cubitus interruptus (Ci), while other studies suggest a role in modulating target gene expression. In examining the cell biology of the pathway, we have found that like its vertebrate homologue, Drosophila Su(fu) enters the nucleus. Furthermore, we find that the nuclear import of Su(fu) occurs in concert with that of Ci in response to Hh signaling. Here, we examine the mechanism by which Su(fu) regulates Ci import by investigating the importance of the Ci nuclear localization signal (NLS) and the effect of adding an additional NLS. Finally, we demonstrate that Ci can bring Su(fu) with it to a multimerized Ci DNA binding site. These results provide a basis for understanding the dual roles played by Su(fu) in the regulation of Ci

Based on the importance of character education in this new century, this study chose the case of Fu Jen Catholic University to learn how they promote character education through related curriculum design, hoping to present the research result of referable models and strategies for promoting character education to current higher education institutes in the country. The purposes of this study are: 1) to discuss the concept and related theoretical foundations of character education; 2) to understand the ideal of Fu Jen Catholic University’s promoting character education; 3) to discuss the model that Fu Jen Catholic University applies in promoting character education; 4) to analyze the strategies that Fu Jen Catholic University applies in promoting character education; 5) to conclude the research result and propose practical recommendations as references for other colleges and universities when they promote character education.
This study concluded the followings: 1) the ideal of Fu Jen Catholic University’s promoting character education comes from the “Apostolic Constitution on Catholic Universities” and the value of whole-person education; 2) Fu Jen Catholic University promotes character education through three dimensions – formal curriculum, informal curriculum and hidden curriculum; 3) their promoting strategies include: (1) to actively convey those core values of truth, goodness, beauty and holiness to faculty members, students and staff; (2) to shape those core values through leadership; (3) to blend those core values into related formal curriculum of character education; (4) to set the basis of those core values in campus’s code of conduct; (5) to encourage open discussion and dialogue on ethic issues; (6) to assist students in practicing those core values; (7) to ensure that the campus is a caring and respectful community; (8) to commit to students of providing a whole-person education. The weakness include: (1)to enhance the assessment currently insufficient on the achievements of those core values; (2) to show pride on school’s accomplishments in promoting morality and citizen moral character. Finally, some research suggestions are proposed according to conclusions: 1) suggestions on Fu Jen Catholic University’s promoting character education; 2) suggestions on other colleges and universities in the country when they promote character education; suggestions on future studies.
The application of this research result is mainly to improve and assess the continuous promotion of character education in Fu Jen Catholic University. In addition, this study also hopes to be able to provide valuable references for other colleges and universities in the country when they promote character education in the future and be well referred as to the direction and vision of developing excellent culture in university campus. Besides, during the research process, this study expects to arouse the public’s attention and feedback on character education so that more people will throw themselves into either academic or practical fields of study to enhance the development of character education.
