During the end of the Ming dynasty, Qi Biaojia (祁彪佳) built his “Yushan” (寓山) garden in the outskirts of the city of Shanyin (山陰). Literati of the time participated in the interpretation of this garden with odes and reply-response pieces in a number of different styles. In addition to the large number of poem, and prose pieces, three works in the fu (賦) style written by Chen Dun (陳遯, date of birth and death unknown), Chen Hanhui (陳函輝, 1590-1646), and Chen Zilong (陳子龍, 1608-1647) have survived. This paper uses these three works in an effort to show the experimentation with and efforts put into writing fu on the subject of gardens by the literati of the late Ming. Three main questions are discussed. First, how did the relation between writer and owner affect the writing angle of three fu ? Second, how did fu written about gardens interpret the meaning invested in the space by the owner, and, particularly in light of the political situation of the time, how did the owner’s choice to either take office or stay out of public life affect the meanings imparted in the garden space? Third, given that literati during the late Ming did in fact use the fu style to write about gardens, how did they go about utilizing the characteristic of the fu as “stacking colors and layering shades, shaping objects and expressing thoughts (鋪采摛文,體物寫志)? In these works, the close connection of the garden with their owner brings to light the difference between this garden and the natural mountain terrain, while at the same time the writer’s relation to and understanding of the owner will also affect the perspective with which they look at the garden and their interpretation of it

Clinical and biochemical risk factors for first and recurrent episodes of venous thrombosis

The objectives of this thesis were to study the magnitude of the risk of venous thrombosis (VT) in the general population, and to determine clinical and biochemical factors that influence this risk. We examined this separately for first and for recurrent thrombotic events: TROL, a Norwegian prospective follow-up study in the population, in which we counted patients with a 1st event of VT and LETS, a follow-up of a Dutch cohort of 474 consecutive patients with a 1st objectively confirmed VT. The incidence rates for all first VT events was 1.43 per 1000 person-years and increased exponentially with age, and were slightly higher in women than in men. Patients with pre-existing inflammation or anticardiolipin antibodies did not have any increased risk for subsequent VT disease. We found that high levels of homocysteine are at most a weak risk factor for subsequent VT. In the LETS-study, the rate of VT recurrence was 25.9 per 1000 patient-years. The risk of recurrence was 2.7 times higher in men than in women. Recurrence risk was increased if the initial VT was unprovoked or if women used oral contraceptives during follow-up. Surprisingly, there was no clear relation between recurrence risk and the presence of thrombophiliaThe studies were financial supported by grants from the Prevention Fund/ZonMW (grant no.2827170), the Netherlands Heart Foundation (grants no. 2000B185, 89.063), the Research Council of Norway (grant no. 148037) and the research council of Helse Sunnmøre (grants no. 56-FU-69-05, 56-FU-52-07, 56-FU-20-08, 56-FU-07-09)UBL - phd migration 201

Natural Variation of the Circadian Clock in Neurospora

No full text
Most living organisms on earth experience daily and expected changes from the rotation of the earth. For an organism, the ability to predict and prepare for incoming stresses or resources is a very important skill for survival. This cellular process of measuring daily time of the day is collectively called the circadian clock. Because of its fundamental role in survival in nature, there is a great interest in studying the natural variation of the circadian clock. However, characterizing the genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying natural variation of circadian clocks remains a challenging task. In this chapter, we will summarize the progress in studying natural variation of the circadian clock in the successful eukaryotic model Neurospora, which led to discovering many design principles of the molecular mechanisms of the eukaryotic circadian clock. Despite the success of the system in revealing the molecular mechanisms of the circadian clock, Neurospora has not been utilized to extensively study natural variation. We will review the challenges that hindered the natural variation studies in Neurospora, and how they were overcome. We will also review the advantages of Neurospora for natural variation studies. Since Neurospora is the model fungal species for circadian study, it represents over 5 million species of fungi on earth. These fungi play important roles in ecosystems on earth, and as such Neurospora could serve as an important model for understanding the ecological role of natural variation in fungal circadian clocks.Advances in Genetics, Vol. 99

Towards the Holy Grail: combining system dynamics and discrete-event simulation in healthcare

No full text
The idea of combining discrete-event simulation and system dynamics has been a topic of debate in theoperations research community for over a decade. Many authors have considered the potential benefits ofsuch an approach from a methodological or practical standpoint. However, despite numerous examples ofmodels with both discrete and continuous parameters in the computer science and engineering literature, nobody in the OR field has yet succeeded in developing a genuinely hybrid approach which truly integratesthe philosophical approach and technical merits of both DES and SD in a single model. In this paperwe consider some of the reasons for this and describe two practical healthcare examples of combinedDES/SD models, which nevertheless fall short of the “holy grail” which has been so widely discussed inthe literature over the past decade

During the Qinb dynasty, Confucian scholars who came under the influ-ence of the mainstream "Han Learning" often relied heavily on the Han Confucian guyi (古義) to interpret the Classics. They even went so far as to propose new commentaries vis-?-vis the long-standing Shisanjing Zhushu (十三經注疏). Given the influence of this scholarly direction, Li Yide (李貽德) had great respect for the scholarship of Qian-Jia scholars such as Sun Xingyen (孫星衍) and Hong Liangji (洪亮吉). Drawing substantially on the results of their works, Li compiled the Zouzhuan (左傳) commentaries by Jia Kui (賈逵) and Fu Qian (服虔), and thereby made significant advancements towards the completion of new subcommentaries. These new commentaries and subcommentaries constituted the major accomplishments of the Qing studies of Confucian Classics. Within the Zouzhuan studies, in particular, Li Deyi's work undoubtedly occupied a vital position in the development from guyi to new subcommentaries
