TYPES OF TALK USED AMONG ELTSTUDENTS OF UNIVERSITASNEGERI MALANG IN DOING ACADEMIC DISCUSSIONS
No full textThe study is aimed to answer the research questions about the types of talkmostly used by ELT students of UniversitasNegeri Malangduring the academic discussions; the attitudes mostly shown by the ELTstudents during the academic discussions focusing on when the students were sharing opinion and keeping silent; and the distribution of the talking time among the students. The design of the study was qualitative classroom research. The subject of the study was students ofUniversitasNegeri Malang, English Language Teaching who took English for Young Learner course. The research instrument used in this study was the researcher herself, while the tool used was voice recorder.The data, which were in form of utterances, were collected by two steps; 1) Chose the subject, and 2) Recorded the discussion activity. The activities were done from March to May 2017. The data were analyzed by using data recording list and attitude analysis checklist. The types of talk which were used were based on theory of Wegerif and Mercer (1997) From the data collection, there were 152 utterances. From the utterances, the researcher found out that the students were mostly used cumulative talk (57.89%), instead of exploratory talk (27.63%) and disputational talk (14.47%). The students’ attitude showed that when sharing opinion the students tended to made individual decision (68.18%), instead of following the previous speaker’s opinion or seeking and considering the opinion before expressing it out (54.55%).Then, in silence, the students tended to keep silent but still paying attention (63.64%) instead of actively contributing opinion (00.00%) or silent and did not pay attention (36.36%). Meanwhile, the distribution of the talking time among the students was dominated by the active students (77.27%)
