Economics of Youth Mental Health:essays on Juvenile Delinquency, Education and Policy
Get PDFMental health problems largely originate during youth and affect one out of five individuals worldwide. The corresponding individual disease burden lead to significant societal costs, as youth mental health problems have a long-lasting impact over the life-cycle. Through an economic lens youth mental health can be seen as a pivotal element of human capital, associated with educational progress and labour market participation, required to produce economic value. Despite the relevance of youth mental health from both a health and economic perspective, there is still an imperative need for research to reduce the burden of mental health for future generations. In this thesis we have focused on one piece of the puzzle, i.e. the lack of data-driven evaluation strategies to identify (cost-)effective youth mental health interventions. One of the challenges is the fact that in many cases, experiments (i.e., randomized controlled trials) remain difficult or impossible to implement, for financial, political, or ethical reasons, or because the population of interest is too small. Therefore, I demonstrate in this thesis that observational data could be used to provide crucial insights for clinical and policy decision-making in order to make more optimal budget allocations. We were able to identify the role of policies in youth mental health trajectories (chapter 2), the effect of mental health interventions on societal outcomes (chapter 3), the relationship between monitoring compliance to compulsory education and student’s test scores (chapter 4), and the long-run return to government expenditures in special education (chapter 5)

No full textOn October 17, 2023, during the 100th Dies Natalis of Radboud University, Geert Corstens received an honorary doctorate from Radboud University. This honorary doctorate was awarded to him because of his tireless efforts for a strong, fair and equal constitutional state. This edition includes the laudation of honorary supervisor Roel Schutgens, the acceptance speech of Geert Corstens and the Van der Grint lecture given by Geert Corstens during the week of the Dies Natalis.
Geert Corstens was president of the Supreme Court of the Netherlands from 2008 to 2014. Immediately after his appointment, he was known for his assertive attitude towards the political apparatus. The independence of the constitutional state should not be threatened by the wishes and needs of politicians and other outsiders, Corstens believed. He has also made a formidable contribution to public-oriented communication and explanation of the rule of law. Corstens also wrote, among other things, the books Our constitutional state and The judge seizes power: And other misconceptions about the democratic constitutional state to promote general communication about rights and democracy in the Netherlands. Corstens is also the author of the standard work Dutch criminal procedural law and was professor of criminal law at Radboud University from 1982 to 1995

No full textDe financiering van gezondheidszorg vraagt impliciet of expliciet om het maken van keuzes. Kosteneffectiviteitsonderzoek is een bruikbaar instrument bij het maken van deze keuzes, omdat het de verhelijking van een breed scala van interventies binnen het zorgdomein mogelijk maakt. Binnen het jeugdzorgdomein is echter nog maar een beperkt aantal kosteneffectiviteitsstudies verricht en het aantal kosteneffectiviteitsstiedies specifiek bij gezinnen met meervoudige en complexe problemen is nihil. In dit hoofdstuk geven we een beknopte inleiding over de methoden en aannames die ten grondslag liggen aan kosteneffectiviteitsonderzoek en staan we stil bij de vraag wat er in dat kader bekend is over de hulpverlening aan gezinnen met complexe en meervoudige problemen
