Traffic Relief Plan: Map
In 1937, a traffic expert (Freedman) recommended a plan to resolve traffic problems in New Brunswick. The plan proposes making alternate streets in the city ONE WAY STREETS, throughout the crowded areas. STOP SIGNS are placed on cross streets approaching the main one-way thoroughfares. When funds are available the breaking through of John Street to Dennis Street, and eventually to Albany Street, is proposed to make a continuous one-way street. Breaking through of Kirkpatrick Street to Albany Street in also included in the plan. It was estimated that the basic plan could be placed in effect immediately at a cost of about $1,000 (covering the cost of one-way and stop signs). From the Rutgers University Special Collections/University Archives collection.
