Portrait of Helen Hunt Jackson painted by A.F. Harmer in 1885, ca. 1885
Photograph of a portrait of Helen Hunt Jackson painted by A.F. Harmer in 1885, ca. 1885. She is turned slightly to the right and is visible from the chest up. She is wearing a high collared light-colored ruffled blouse under a dark dress. The portrait is signed with the artist's initials, "A.F.H.". Jackson was the author of the book "Ramona." Possibly painted from sittings in 1880 or 1882
Design metrics for evaluating the propulsive efficiency of future ships
There is an increasing need for the ship design process to take account of environmental issues such as the emission of greenhouse gases and the likely extension of a carbon dioxide charging mechanism to international shipping. These issues, together with the need for economic viability, provide further incentives to improve the efficiency of propulsion of ships. The main components of powering are firstly reviewed. Individual components and other power saving devices are identified which should contribute to improvements in the overall efficiency of propulsion. Suitable design metrics and procedures, taking into account economic and environmental factors, are recommended for the design of future ships
Semi-supervised assessment of incomplete LV coverage in cardiac MRI using generative adversarial nets
Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) images play a growing role in diagnostic imaging of cardiovascular diseases. Ensuring full coverage of the Left Ventricle (LV) is a basic criteria of CMR image quality. Complete LV coverage, from base to apex, precedes accurate cardiac volume and functional assessment. Incomplete coverage of the LV is identified through visual inspection, which is time-consuming and usually done retrospectively in large imaging cohorts. In this paper, we propose a novel semi-supervised method to check the coverage of LV from CMR images by using generative adversarial networks (GAN), we call it Semi-Coupled-GANs (SCGANs). To identify missing basal and apical slices in a CMR volume, a two-stage framework is proposed. First, the SCGANs generate adversarial examples and extract high-level features from the CMR images; then these image attributes are used to detect missing basal and apical slices. We constructed extensive experiments to validate the proposed method on UK Biobank with more than 6000 independent volumetric MR scans, which achieved high accuracy and robust results for missing slice detection, comparable with those of state of the art deep learning methods. The proposed method, in principle, can be adapted to other CMR image data for LV coverage assessment

Un’esperienza didattica in tema di paleonutrizione
The item arises from an "elective" Paleopathology course suggested for students graduating in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Milan. This course discussed subjects as: molecular paleobiology, tumors and infectious paleopathology, paleonutrition, paleopathological museums and history of medicine. The author dealt with the "paleonutrition" subject. Extremely actual aspects emerged which drew the students' attention
Screening for Cognitive Impairment by Model Assisted Cerebral Blood Flow Estimation
Objective: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a
progressive and debilitating neurodegenerative disease; a major
health concern in the ageing population with an estimated
prevalence of 46 million dementia cases worldwide. Early
diagnosis is therefore crucial so mitigating treatments can be
initiated at an early stage. Cerebral hypoperfusion has been
linked with blood-brain barrier dysfunction in the early stages
of AD, and screening for chronic cerebral hypoperfusion in
individuals has been proposed for improving the early diagnosis
of AD. However, ambulatory measurements of cerebral blood
flow are not routinely carried out in the clinical setting. In this
study, we combine physiological modelling with Holter blood
pressure monitoring and carotid ultrasound imaging to predict
24-hour cerebral blood flow (CBF) profiles in individuals. One
hundred and three participants (53 with mild cognitive
impairment (MCI), 50 healthy controls) underwent modelassisted
prediction of 24-hour CBF. Model-predicted CBF and
neuropsychological tests were features in lasso regression
models for MCI diagnosis. Results: A CBF-enhanced classifier
for diagnosing MCI performed better, area-under-the-curve
(AUC) = 0.889 (95%-CI: 0.800 to 0.978), than a classifier based
only on the neuropsychological test scores, AUC = 0.818 (95%-
CI: 0.643 to 0.992). An additional cohort of 25 participants (11
MCI, 14 healthy) was recruited to perform model validation by
arterial spin-labelling magnetic resonance imaging and to
establish a link between measured CBF and that predicted by
the model. Conclusion: Ultrasound imaging and ambulatory
blood pressure measurements enhanced with physiological
modelling can improve MCI diagnosis accuracy
Architectur
