in F. Floricic, Ed.
The aim of this paper is to account for the place and the properties of Vocatives in the linguistic system. A general sketch of the nature of Vocatives is first presented, in which it is suggested that the exclusion of Vocatives from the Case category is not justified. Then Vocatives are investigated, with special attention on the morphonology of Romance data. It is shown that Vocatives do not obey any prosodic minimality restriction; from this point of view, Vocatives pattern alongside with monosyllabic imperatives discussed in Floricic & Molinu (2009). Peripherality, it is suggested, is thus one of the most important features of Vocatives: Vocatives will be argued to be peripheral in the case system, a feature which is reflected as well in their exceptional phonological maked-up. Non-solidarity will thus be claimed to characterize Vocatives as a category, hence the possibility of its appearance or disappearance in such or such a language, regardless of the existence of the other case
CLUB Working Papers in Linguistics Volume 1.
The aim of this paper is to offer a description of sentence negation in the Languedocian variety of Occitan. After a brief overview of the general properties of negation in Occitan, it will be shown, on the basis of unpublished dialectological data gathered in the 60\u27s and 70\u27s, that in some localities within the Occitan area the negative marker pas has cliticized. However, gapping structures show that in the dialects in which pas has acquired clitic status, it is still possible to use the tonic form, thus pointing to the conclusion that in these dialects sentence negation has two allomorphs. The last part of the paper deals with cliticization as a general phenomenon, and questions Witold Manczak\u27s view according to which there is no basis for a distinction between tonic and atonic forms. The problem of frequency will be discussed, and it will be argued that the cliticization phenomena presented in this paper should not be analyzed as a consequence of this factor
The aim of the paper is to analyse the phenomenon of the allomorphism of the Italian indefinite pronoun nessun and its lack in its French equivalent aucun. Whereas the former appears in the variant forms nessun / nessuno, the latter remains unchanged irrespective of the syntactic function it performs. Having analysed the phonological hypothesis, the author attempts to demonstrate that the alternation is not exclusively limited to phonological conditions, but is also caused by syntactic aspects: the autonomy of the full form and the dependence of the shorter form. It is also hypothesised here that the lack of the form *auque in contemporary French stems from the very nature of the negation process of which the form aucun is an exponent
