Improving Surface Quality and Fatigue Life of Electron Beam Melted Ti6Al4V by Chemical Machining

    No full text
Due to the high demand for innovative parts from the aerospace, biomedical, and automotive industries, 3D printing of titanium parts is widely researched. Electron beam melting (EBM) is one of the few additive manufacturing techniques that can quickly generate high density components. However, additive manufacturing techniques based on powder beds are characterized by subpar surface finishing, which also results in poor mechanical performances that are not suitable for industrial standards. Thus, surface finishing post processing is generally needed. Since fatigue behavior is strongly affected by surface quality, this work aims to highlight how chemical machining impacts this type of mechanical response. Rotating fatigue beam testing method has been chosen for the experimental campaign since it intrinsically stresses more the sample surfaces, in this way the effect of surface finishing is highlighted

Superplastic forming/diffusion bonding of a titanium alloy for the realization of an aircraft structural component in multi-sheets configuration

Superplastic forming and diffusion bonding (SPF/DB) is a near-net-shape forming and joining process used with alloys having superplastic properties in order to make manufact which should have light weight and high stiffness. The aerospace is one of those sectors in which such technology is mainly used. This process allows to reduce the buy-to-fly ratio and consequently the production costs thanks to the possibility to produce complex shape components in a single shot. The material widely used for this application is the Ti-6Al-4V alloy for its high strength vs weight ratio, excellent mechanical proprieties, corrosion resistance and galvanic compatibility with carbon fiber reinforced composite materials. In this study, finite element analysis of the SPF/DB process has been carried out in order to investigate the thickness prediction, the optimization of the tooling’s geometry and the definition of the sheets initial thickness in the blow forming process of a multisheets configuratio

Influence of processing parameters on microstructure and roughness of electron beam melted Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy

The effect of heat input rate, hatch spacing, and focus offset upon microstructure, hardness, and roughness of EBM-manufactured Ti- 6Al-4V titanium alloy was studied via a factorial experiment. It had been found that a coarser microstructure is generated for high heat input and low line offset. Increasing the heat input or conversely decreasing the line offset leads to a higher lath thickness with consequent lower hardness. The roughness of the top surfaces decreases with the increase of the heat input and the focus offset or with the decrease of the line offset. On the other side the roughness of the side surfaces is dependant only from the heat input and it is proportional to the latter
