No full textThe Th1/Th2 paradigm of acquired immunity is proving essential for a better understanding of immunoregulation in candidiasis and perhaps other fungal infections, conditions that may be life-threatening in humans and difficult to control by chemotherapy alone, especially in neutropenic and severely immunocompromised patients. In its basic conception applied to Candida infection in mice, this paradigm calls for: (i) an association between Th1 responses and the onset/maintenance of phagocyte-dependent immunity, critical for opposing infectivity of the commensal, focusing an infection, and clearing the yeast from infected tissue; (ii) the ability of the yeast to activate Th2 response as an evasive strategy; (iii) the reciprocal regulation of Th1 and Th2 responses, resulting in a dynamic balance between these two types of reactivity. This balance, in concert with a variety of environmental factors, may regulate the status of the yeast as a commensal or pathogen in the mucosal tissue of colonized humans, but may also determine the outcome of deep-seated systemic infections once hematogenous dissemination of the yeast has occurred. An important corollary of this hypothesis may be the possible combined effects on Th immunity of Candida carriage/infection and various disease states. While immune deficiency or dysregulation, resulting in an altered cytokine balance as may occur in AIDS, can reasonably be expected to increase local infectivity of the yeast, it is even more intriguing that antifungal chemotherapy will resolve some of the unusual skin (atopic dermatitis-like) disorders frequently observed in this clinical setting, patients with AIDS. Besides, an immunopathologic role for Candida has been suggested for atopic dermatitis, atopy, and other conditions, overtly associated or not with Candida. Thus, the Th cell dichotomy to Candida may have important implications not only for regulation of the balance between commensalism and infection, but may also contribute to the onset or dominance of Th2 responses in other disease states. A similar example, although with different effects, may be provided by the temporary improvement seen in atopic dermatitis patients in concomitance with acute severe infections, an effect that has been proposed to result from transient down-regulation of the predominant Th2 cell reactivity. With a view to either controlling Candida infections or opposing Candida-related immunopathology, the promotion of yeast-specific Th1 responses appears to be a promising immunotherapeutic approach. This, in principle, could be achieved by subtraction of Th2 cytokines or by administration of Th1-promoting cytokines. However, our initial studies with exogenous IL-12 were unsuccessful, suggesting that the recombinant cytokine: (i) is unable to oppose Th2 differentiation driven in vivo by IL-4/IL-10; (ii) may induce endogenous IL-10 production as a regulatory response, and (iii) may potentate local inflammatory responses in gastrointestinal infection or even trigger IFN-gamma-dependent mechanisms of fungal septic shock.. More recent studies seem to provide encouraging results, at least under specific conditions of testing. In acute candidemia, neutrophils appear to be a major source of the directive cytokines, IL-12 and IL-10, thus contributing to the selection of Th1 and Th2 cell responses to LVS or virulent infection, respectively. Neutrophils may also be an important source of IL-10 released in response to challenge with exogenous IL-12. As a result, the Th1-promoting role of IL-12 may be largely unopposed (by IL-10 induction) in neutropenic mice, which would otherwise succumb to LVS challenge. These animals are, in fact, cured by replacement therapy with IL-12 and acquire durable, Th1-associated anticandidal protection. These findings may be very important for immunotherapy of fungal infections in humans. Neutropenic patients are those at the highest risk for developing systemic candidal infections

No full textLa terza serie delle Lupienses offre nuovo combustibile allo studio dell’opera di Dante e della sua tradizione, in alcuni casi sparigliando i dati critici ricevuti da una lunga esegesi di settore: Andrea Mazzucchi propone correzioni, aggiustamenti e nuove aperture critiche sulle possibilità espressive del Convivio; Francesco Bausi, rileggendo il canto I dell'Inferno, scoraggia l'eccesso interpretativo e sovraletterale della tradizione mostrando le aporie della critica tradizionale; Domenico Cofano illustra con abbondanza di dati la formazione e lo sviluppo del mito di Francesca da Rimini nell'Ottocento, romantico e non; Elisa Brilli svela nel XXVI canto del Purgatorio la presenza intertestuale di luoghi determinanti delle Confessioni di S. Agostino, che riportano la materia dantesca alla tematica della "conversione" e ai suoi modi; infine, Fabio Moliterni porta alla luce gli elusivi rapporti di Emilio Sereni con l'opera dantesca, contributo importante per la definizione di un «dantismo» contemporaneo tutt'altro che esaltatorio e banale
Bassani e l’omosessualità
No full textIn this essay the author analyzes the presence of homosexuality, as well as its symbolic equivalents of injured or diminished virility, in Giorgio Bassani’s narrative. In this direction, the most significant texts are considered The Gold Rimmed Glasses (where the tragic hero is an homosexual), Behind the Door and The Heron, but also the figure of Alberto (and somewhat of the protagonist and narrator) in The Garden of the Finzi-Contini and of Barilari in One night in ‘43 are the subject of thematic interpretation. The author claims that homosexual identity is not investigated itself and ontologically legitimized by Bassani, but takes the value of a metaphor for exclusion, even a violent one, as the one that struck, at the same time, Jewish identity after the enactment of Racial Laws in Italy. From this point of view, the doubt on the “conformity” of his own sexuality, the fear this sexuality would meet the regime’s propaganda stereotypes, or (in Behind the Door) the liberating projection of these stereotypes on an antagonistic character and alter ego seem to inhabit the protagonists of the aforementioned novels and short stories and produce, with their diverted or evaded questions, the agony of false consciousness.In questo saggio l’autore analizza la presenza dell’omosessualità, nonché dei suoi equivalenti simbolici della virilità lesa o diminuita, nella narrativa di Giorgio Bassani. In tale direzione, i testi bassaniani più significativi vengono considerati Gli occhiali d’oro (in cui il tragico protagonista è un omosessuale), Dietro la porta e L’airone, ma anche la figura di Alberto (e, in parte, dello stesso protagonista) nel Giardino dei Finzi-Contini e quella di Barilari in Una notte del ’43 sono oggetto di interpretazione tematica. L’autore del saggio cerca di mostrare che l’identità omosessuale non è da Bassani indagata in sé e legittimata ontologicamente, ma assume un puro valore di metafora dell’esclusione, anche violenta, quella che parallelamente colpì l’identità ebraica dopo l’emanazione delle leggi razziali in Italia. Secondo questa angolazione di lettura, il dubbio sulla “conformità” della propria sessualità, il timore di un’omologazione di essa agli stereotipi della propaganda di regime o (in Dietro la Porta) la proiezione liberatoria di questi ultimi su un personaggio antagonistico / alteregoico, sembrano abitare i protagonisti dei romanzi e dei racconti succitati e produrre, coi loro interrogativi deviati o elusi, i tormenti della falsa coscienza
Da Pietro il Venerabile a Dante (per Guido, Ciriatto, Catalano, Buoso e altri)
No full textL’articolo mette in luce, per la prima volta negli studi danteschi, alcune importanti intertestualità, entro la “Commedia”, dal “De miraculis” di Pietro il Venerabile (di tradizione limitata in Italia ma che Dante deve aver conosciuto per il tramite dell’amicizia palesata verso Pietro e dei riferimenti a questi contenuti nelle lettere di san Bernardo), con particolare riguardo alla demonologia esposta nella suddetta raccolta del cluniacense. Evidenti e notevoli appaiono le affinità con alcuni luoghi dell’”Inferno” dantesco, tra gli altri in particolare col canto di Ciacco, coi canti di Malebolge, con quello degli ipocriti (e qui l’analisi si sviluppa, per il motivo della “tarnkappe”, anche attraverso il confronto con un passo celebre, eppure finora non fruito dai dantisti, della “Historia ecclesiastica” di Orderico Vitale), con la scena che ha a protagonista Buoso da Duera e, soprattutto, con l’episodio della contesa fra il diavolo e san Francesco per l’anima di Guido da Montefeltro, per il quale l’autore reca anche a sussidio prove d’intertesualità con la vita di san Furseo, col “Dialogus miraculorum” di Cesario di Heisterbach e con la “Cronaca” cassinese
