No full textRacconto tra i più letti di Henry James, Daisy Miller fu, quando uscì nel 1878, un immediato successo di scandalo, di volta in volta letto dai suoi detrattori e difensori come un oltraggio alle fanciulle americane o un’esaltazione della loro innocenza, come una rappresentazione diffamatoria dei connazionali all’estero o una parabola volta ad ammonirli sulle insidie del Grand Tour europeo. Nonostante la sua apparente leggerezza di commedia sentimentale, il racconto mostrava così la sua capacità di toccare alcuni nervi scoperti della cultura degli Stati Uniti a quel tempo, in bilico fra perdurante provincialismo da ex-colonia e incipienti ambizioni di potenza globale. In più, con il suo comportamento e le conseguenze che ne derivano nel racconto, il personaggio di Daisy Miller metteva in questione la posizione sociale della donna, i modelli che ne definivano i ruoli, i rapporti di potere fra i generi in una società attraversata dai primi fermenti femministi. Il tutto, in un miracoloso equilibrio fra la prosa scintillante e leggibile del primo James, e la sottigliezza e l’ambivalenza che segneranno la sua fase più matura
"'Nothing but a feeling of brotherhood': the Interracial Question and the Return to Africa in Pauline Hopkins's Of One Blood"
No full textDuring the last twenty years Pauline Hopkins’s novel Of One Blood: Or, the Hidden Self (1903) has turned out to be one of the most debated text of early twentieth-century African American literature. In my essay I engage in a close reading of the novel in order to further investigate the method of characterization in relation to the ideological stances of the author. While most recent criticism has focused on Hopkins’ portrayal of male/female and/or the female/female relations in the novel, my study analyzes the dynamics among the four chief male characters and possibly proposes a fresher understanding of the race relations in the text. On the one hand, my study questions those pessimistic interpretations which tend to overlook any significant positive interracial relations in the story. On the other hand it provides new elements to reassess the supposed influence of late nineteenth/early twentieth-century imperialist rhetoric over Hopkins’ fiction, which has been already suggested by other scholars. My research on the method of characterization also calls attention to Hopkins’s creative handling of the figure of the mulatto and puts a new emphasis on her ability of representing black women’s pivotal role in the construction of black identity in America

No full textThis essay examines travel books written by American pedestrian travelers in Europe in the 19th century. Drawing from recent studies on the cultural history of walking (Solnit 2001; Amato 2004), it analyzes works by authors such as Bayard Taylor and Mark Twain, showing that these texts aimed, on the one hand, at “americanizing” the elitist concept of “Grand Tour” by refashioning it according to the egalitarian and democratic ideals of the New World, On the other hand, they contributed to build an alternative tourist imagination by spreading a new way of experiencing the destination, very much at odds with the comforts and values of middle-class tourism, which had risen considerably thanks to the development of the railway system
