Lost in participation: conflicts and motivations in participatory culture-led regeneration projects
Full text linkThe research explores the frictions and tensions that may arise between stakeholders with conflicting aims in culture-led urban regeneration projects. Using ethnography (particularly deep hanging out), the core part of the paper empirically investigates a participatory operatic project, OperaCamion, developed within a complex governance structure, involving public institutions, a creative team and two opera theatres; adaptation of operas have toured public spaces and, in Palermo, resulted in a co-production with citizens. Through fieldwork, the paper illustrates the tensions resulting from conflicting needs and points out the need for accurate partnership design and an appropriate selection of participants, followed by negotiation and conflict mitigation strategies in order to ensure that all the involved stakeholders gain benefits and derive value from the partnership, and that the culture-led regeneration project is delivered successfully
Lo spazio pubblico nel post-sisma 2016-2017: mercificazione turistica e tentativi di riappropriazione dei luoghi nel caso di Amatrice
Full text linkLa sequenza sismica che ha colpito l’Italia centrale tra 2016 e 2017 ha generato intensi processi di de- e riterritorializzazione che hanno reso il cratere un contesto privilegiato per l’analisi di fenomeni socio-territoriali. Attraverso l’analisi delle trasformazioni del territorio amatriciano nel post-sisma, si prende in esame l’impatto delle principali misure di gestione dell’emergenza e della ricostruzione, per comprendere il processo di riterritorializzazione in corso e le politiche di sviluppo sottintese. La riflessione si svolge nella prospettiva della geografia sociale, applicando alcune categorie della sociologia dei disastri. Delineato il quadro specifico della gestione emergenziale, la riflessione intende far emergere le tendenze dominanti nell’uso dello spazio pubblico da parte dei diversi attori territoriali, sottolineando le frizioni tra diverse pratiche spaziali che sottintendono diverse visioni dello sviluppo territoriale.The seismic sequence that struck central Italy between 2016 and 2017 triggered intense de- and reterritorialization processes that made the crater a favorable context for the analysis of socio-territorial phenomena. Through the analysis of the transformations of the Amatrician territory post-earthquake, this paper examines the impact of the main emergency and reconstruction measures taken, in order to understand the reterritorialization process that is underway and the implied policies of development. The reflection in this paper is based on the perspective of social geography, drawing on categories derived from the disaster sociology. In addition to providing an outline of the specific framework of emergency management, this paper aims to identify the dominant trends relating to the use of public space by various territorial stakeholders, with particular emphasis on the frictions that have arisen between different spatial practices representing the different perspectives surrounding local development
Culture as Fourth Pillar of Sustainable Development: Perspectives for Integration, Paradigms of Action
No full textThe paper explores the relationship between culture and sustainable development. In particular, it advocates the introduction of cultural sustainability as a fourth pillar of sustainable development. A first section explores the existing research on the topic, and focuses on the notion of culture itself and how it should be intended in the context of sustainable development. Then, the existing debate over culture's position among the three pillars of sustainable development is presented. In the second section, the issue of assessing sustainability in cultural policies is addressed. The proposed approach suggests the interconnection of economic, societal and artistic dimensions of evaluation, thus going beyond the instrumental view of culture which is common in the sustainability discourse. Culture-driven sustainable development is presented in the third section: policies concerning the use of tangible heritage, the development of cultural districts and participatory practices for the performing arts are analysed; their ability to combine artistic merit and positive impacts on the other dimensions of sustainable development is eventually assessed. Conclusively, cultural policies and practices prove able to generate sustainable growth at all levels, not least the creative and artistic one; as a consequence culture can be fully considered a fourth pillar of sustainable development

No full textIl contributo ricostruisce la storia del patrimonio gastronomico amaticiano: una storia di relazioni transcalari legate al lungo processo di emigrazione che nei secoli ha portato la comunità amatriciana a trasferirsi a Roma. Si ripercorre in che modo la comunità abbia costruito la tua tradizione gastronomica - intesa come patrimonio culturale, oltre che economico - nella relazione mobile tra più luoghi. Un processo di costruzione di simboli e capitali collettivi fortemente transcalare che affonda le radici nell'origine transumante della comunità amatriciana, di cui il volume nel complesso si occupa. Infine, facendo riferimento al presente post-sisma, il contributo discute criticamente il ruolo dell'identità gastronomica rispetto allo sviluppo del territorio amatriciano, presentandola come veicolo di politiche di sviluppo estrattive e conflittuali.The contribution reconstructs the history of the Amatician gastronomic heritage: a history of transcalar relationships linked to the long process of emigration that over the centuries has led the Amatrician community to move to Rome. It retraces how the community has built your gastronomic tradition - understood as a cultural heritage, as well as an economic one - in the mobile relationship between multiple places. A process of construction of strongly transcalar symbols and collective capitals that has its roots in the transhumant origin of the Amatrician community, which the volume deals with as a whole. Finally, referring to the present post-earthquake, the contribution critically discusses the role of gastronomic identity with respect to the development of the Amatrician territory, presenting it as a vehicle for extractive and conflicting development policies

Full text linkL’articolo analizza la performance organizzata da Non Una Di Meno-Palermo nella giornata contro la violenza maschile sulle donne e di genere 2020. Nel corso del presidio, lo spazio urbano è stato risignificato da un’‘Ancella’, riferimento al romanzo e alla serie The handmaid’s tale (Atwood, 1985). Utilizzata più volte dai movimenti transfemministi per rappresentare il controllo e il disciplinamento del corpo femminile, la rappresentazione dell’Ancella assume ulteriori significati nel contesto della pandemia del Covid-19.
Il contributo indaga la performance analizzandone da una parte gli aspetti spaziali, in relazione alle altre forme di spazializzazione del movimento; dall’altra gli immaginari (trans)femministi mobilitati, tra seduzioni del pop e risignificazioni. L’obiettivo è comprendere quali sono i significati e le alleanze che il movimento sta costruendo attraverso questo tipo di immaginari e pratiche spaziali, individuando le specificità del caso palermitano.This article analyses the performance organised by Non Una Di Meno-Palermo for the 2020 International Day for the elimination of Violence against Women and gender-based. During the demonstration, the urban space has been re-signified by a ‘Handmaid’, with regard to the novel and the TV-series The handmaid’s tale (Atwood, 1985). Used many times by the transfemminist movements to represent women’s body control and discipline, the Handmaid representation takes on further meanings in the Covid-19 pandemic framework. This paper examines the performance by analysing on the one hand its spatial aspects, in connection with other forms of movements’ spatialisation; on the other hand, the mobilised (trans)feminist imaginaries, between pop seduction and resignifications. The aim is to understand which are the meanings and the alliances the movement is building through this kind of spatial imaginaries and practices, by identifying the specificities in the Palermo case
Séisme 2016 et Amatrice: au-delà des représentations sensationnalistes, la recherche-action militante
No full textDopo il terremoto del 2016-2017, l'Appennino centrale italiano sta attraversando una lunga fase di transizione tra l'urbicidio e la ricostruzione. La riflessione emerge da una ricerca sui processi di ri-territorializzazione della città di Amatrice, nel cuore del cratere del terremoto: un lavoro all'incrocio tra la geografia sociale e culturale, sostenuto da nove mesi di lavoro sul campo. Dopo aver descritto il sistema di gestione dell'emergenza, ci si interroga sulla dimensione di rappresentazione del disastro. Criticando l'iconografia sensazionalista, si descrive l'esperienza di ricerca di Emidio di Treviri, un collettivo di ricerca-azione nato per documentare e analizzare i processi socio-economici e territoriali successivi al disastro, che ha fatto ampio uso di mezzi audiovisivi. L'uso della documentazione visiva nella ricerca collettiva è discusso come strumento di ricerca posizionata in cui gli attori non sono più oggetti di ricerca, ma interlocutori e beneficiari di un processo di ricerca circolare e situato.À la suite du séisme du 2016-2017, l’Apennin Central italien traverse aujourd’hui une longue phase de transition entre l’urbicide et la reconstruction. La réflexion émerge d’une recherche sur les processus de réterritorialisation de la ville d’Amatrice, au cœur du cratère frappé par le séisme : un travail à la croisée des approches de géographie sociale et culturelle, enrichi de neuf mois de terrain. Après avoir décrit le dispositif de gestion mis en place pour gérer l’émergence, on s’interroge sur le niveau représentatif de la catastrophe. En critiquant l’iconographie sensationnaliste, on décrit l’expérience de recherche d’Emidio di Treviri, collectif de recherche-action constitué pour documenter et analyser les processus socio-économiques et territoriaux suivant la catastrophe qui a beaucoup utilisé les moyens audio-visuels. On questionne le recours à la documentation visuelle dans la recherche collective en tant qu’outil de recherche positionnée où les acteurs ne sont plus objets de recherche, mais deviennent interlocuteurs et bénéficiaires d’un processus de recherche circulaire et situé
Commoning the Stage: The Complex Semantics of the Theatre Commons
No full textThe paper investigates the present role of theatre in society; in particular, it seeks to identify theatre as a peculiar, complex commons, with a precise spatial, relational and cultural syntax outlined in the first section with relevant examples. The stratification of meanings, archetypes and formats of such commons and the cultural value it has generated in different times and for different societies are described in the second section. Theatre is analysed through the commons analytical framework in the third section, identifying its characteristics of a semantic commons. The policy and strategic implications of the conceptualisation of theatre as a commons are expressed in the fourth section: in particular, its features of publicity and togetherness testify for its power to catalyse powerful instances such as the right to the city and the claim for the resurgence of the public sphere. Examples of policies and practices from the international context are provided that illustrate the emerging map of actions going towards such objectives
Il bosco in aree interne. Risorsa locale o paesaggio ludico?
No full textPer ragionare sulle dendrolatrie - le pratiche, i miti e le figure dell’immaginario arboreo - in prospettiva geografica, questo contributo sviluppa una riflessione sul bosco: figura dell’immaginario arboreo, ma anche risorsa fondamentale per territori rurali e montani. Si analizza in che modo questa risorsa sia interpretata nel contesto delle aree interne: territori gravati da deficit di sviluppo e servizi per i quali dal 2013 la Strategia Nazionale per le Aree Interne (SNAI) ha avviato interventi per adeguare i servizi e promuovere progetti di sviluppo. Si indagano diverse interpretazioni del bosco: dall'approccio conservazionista, a quello della prospettiva territorialista che considera il bosco come parte del "capitale territoriale", risorsa per lo sviluppo locale. Si descrivono in particolare le pratiche e politiche di gestione della riserva di Santa Maria del Bosco e Monte Genuardo, tra la provincia di Agrigento e di Palermo. Questo caso permette di mettere a fuoco in che modo le visioni dominanti del bosco si traducano in segni sul territorio che scrivono, cancellano e riscrivono i paesaggi boschivi.In order to reason on dendrolatries - the practices, myths and figures of the arboreal imaginary - in a geographical perspective, this contribution develops a reflection on the forest: a figure of the arboreal imaginary, but also a fundamental resource for rural and mountain territories. It analyzes how this resource is interpreted in the context of inner peripheries: territories burdened by deficits in development and services for which since 2013 the National Strategy for Internal Areas (SNAI) has launched interventions to adapt services and promote development projects. Different interpretations of the forest are investigated: from the conservationist approach, to the territorialist perspective that considers the forest as part of the "territorial capital", a resource for local development. In particular, we describe the management practices and policies of the reserve of Santa Maria del Bosco and Monte Genuardo, between the provinces of Agrigento and Palermo. This case allows us to focus on how the dominant visions of the forest are translated into signs on the territory that write, erase and rewrite wooded landscapes
Rural storytelling: itinerari di rigenerazione nell’area dei Sicani
Full text linkIl contributo presenta una pratica di narrazione turistica del mondo rurale che nasce da nuove forme di relazione tra attori e territorio. Infatti, secondo una prospettiva geo-culturale, consideriamo gli itinerari sia come cammini e pratiche turistiche slow, sia come discorsi e immaginari che risignificano il territorio. Il contributo analizza una forma di racconto turistico, facendo riferimento a una ricerca sul campo condotta nei monti Sicani, in Sicilia, con una guida turistica esperienziale. L’obiettivo della ricerca è stato analizzare gli immaginari geografici di questo storytelling, mostrando come le rappresentazioni areali non tengano conto della molteplicità di sensi del luogo e dei processi reticolari a piccola scala che attraversano i territori marginali
