Oltre aree interne e borghi: i paesi come spazi relazionali. Scarti di zolfo e nuovi abitanti a Cianciana (Sicilia) Autori Francesca Sabatini

    No full text
The paper reflects on the village as a geographical object irreducible to the definitions of inner peripheries: a category that has revived the discourse on these territories, but has also flattened it to perspectives that often reiterate oppositional binarisms and limit the understanding of practices, subjectivities and hybrid spatialities. Taking a distance from this category, the article considers the village beyond the dichotomous opposition with the urban: a relational space in which rurality is traversed by processes of globalization, mobility and urbanization. Within this theoretical framework, the article describes the case of Cianciana, in Sicily, where sulfur wastes and new international inhabitants refer to stories of ‘restanza’, forms of tourist reuse of industrial heritage and residential tourism practices. Through this case, the article reflects on the village as a relational space, reconfigured by trajectories that hold together globalization and marginalization, innovation and abandonment, new migrations and persistent abandonment

Lost in participation: conflicts and motivations in participatory culture-led regeneration projects

    No full text
The research explores the frictions and tensions that may arise between stakeholders with conflicting aims in culture-led urban regeneration projects. Using ethnography (particularly deep hanging out), the core part of the paper empirically investigates a participatory operatic project, OperaCamion, developed within a complex governance structure, involving public institutions, a creative team and two opera theatres; adaptation of operas have toured public spaces and, in Palermo, resulted in a co-production with citizens. Through fieldwork, the paper illustrates the tensions resulting from conflicting needs and points out the need for accurate partnership design and an appropriate selection of participants, followed by negotiation and conflict mitigation strategies in order to ensure that all the involved stakeholders gain benefits and derive value from the partnership, and that the culture-led regeneration project is delivered successfully

Lo spazio pubblico nel post-sisma 2016-2017: mercificazione turistica e tentativi di riappropriazione dei luoghi nel caso di Amatrice

The seismic sequence that struck central Italy between 2016 and 2017 triggered intense de- and reterritorialization processes that made the crater a favorable context for the analysis of socio-territorial phenomena. Through the analysis of the transformations of the Amatrician territory post-earthquake, this paper examines the impact of the main emergency and reconstruction measures taken, in order to understand the reterritorialization process that is underway and the implied policies of development. The reflection in this paper is based on the perspective of social geography, drawing on categories derived from the disaster sociology. In addition to providing an outline of the specific framework of emergency management, this paper aims to identify the dominant trends relating to the use of public space by various territorial stakeholders, with particular emphasis on the frictions that have arisen between different spatial practices representing the different perspectives surrounding local development.

Deconstructing homelessness: Alternative narratives on and by marginalized and homeless groups in the city of Bologna

    No full text
The paper addresses the political and cultural problem underpinning mainstream narratives on homelessness. The absence of data, in conjunction with the misconceptions associated with homelessness, translate into the criminalization and stigmatization of homelessness, both at the local level and in fragmented policies at national and international levels. Section one presents an overview of homelessness as a cultural and political problem; section two then introduces the Italian situation and Bologna as a case study. After a presentation of the method followed in section three, sections four and five describe and then discuss two projects initiated by a political collective in the city of Bologna that directly involve homeless people in the deconstruction of imageries and narratives around homelessness. Finally, section six draws conclusions about the need to generate new narratives capable of accounting for the intersectional and complex nature of the phenomenon of homelessness: new narratives capable of restoring to the homeless their articulate human identity

Culture as Fourth Pillar of Sustainable Development: Perspectives for Integration, Paradigms of Action

    No full text
The paper explores the relationship between culture and sustainable development. In particular, it advocates the introduction of cultural sustainability as a fourth pillar of sustainable development. A first section explores the existing research on the topic, and focuses on the notion of culture itself and how it should be intended in the context of sustainable development. Then, the existing debate over culture's position among the three pillars of sustainable development is presented. In the second section, the issue of assessing sustainability in cultural policies is addressed. The proposed approach suggests the interconnection of economic, societal and artistic dimensions of evaluation, thus going beyond the instrumental view of culture which is common in the sustainability discourse. Culture-driven sustainable development is presented in the third section: policies concerning the use of tangible heritage, the development of cultural districts and participatory practices for the performing arts are analysed; their ability to combine artistic merit and positive impacts on the other dimensions of sustainable development is eventually assessed. Conclusively, cultural policies and practices prove able to generate sustainable growth at all levels, not least the creative and artistic one; as a consequence culture can be fully considered a fourth pillar of sustainable development

Public libraries as social infrastructures: libraries’ response to the COVID crisis in the Emilia-Romagna region

    No full text
The research investigates the response of public libraries to the COVID crisis in the Emilia-Romagna region (Italy). Group interviews were conducted involving 36 librarians from the 9 provinces of the Region, using the ethnographic methodology of "deep hanging out". Results show the resilience of public libraries during the crisis; the importance of libraries as social infrastructure beyond the services they provide, highlighting how the digital divide has affected the demand for the libraries' services; the need to implement librarian communication and digitization skills, as well as a lack of consistent support from the Region were noted. The first section of the paper provides framework over cultural institutions and the COVID crisis. The second introduces the methodology for the sample choice and for conducting the interviews. The third section presents findings from the interviews. The fourth section presents conclusive remarks and policy indications for the support of public libraries
