The role of the stage presence in teaching math

No full text
During the winter semester 2014-2015 at the Department of Education of Roma Tre University took place a workshop about math teacher’s stage presence. The workshop developed the concept behind a pilot lesson held in November 2013 (Neri Macchiavena 2014) and work on mimesis in children maths education (Rachele 2013). Our aim was to cope with the communication challenge inherent to mathematics learning and teaching, including language challenge and the gesture beyond it, but more generally the expression challenge and the embodying of mathematical ideas. The research in 20th century theatre and dance inspired us rather than quantitative instruments from psychology or linguistics and rhetoric. Theory references which inspired the practice are described, both in theatre and performing training (Laban, 1948, 1971, Dalcroze 1921, Barba 1991, Scaramuzzo 2010, 2013) and in mathematics education (Enriques 1938, Polya 1945); the exercises and main findings are discussed

Physical, Chemical and Biological Properties of some Alternative Growing Substrates.

Peat represented the predominant constituent of growing media for soilless production in the last decades. However, due to the high cost of extraction and future availability and sustainability, a worldwide search for alternative substrates has been developed, focusing on secondary processing compounds or recycling wastes. In order to evaluate the suitability of new materials, organic by-products, namely hemp fiber (2 particle sizes) and grape marc were studied and compared with peat and some rising substitutes: Coir (3% fiber) and green compost. Methodology: Some of the main physical (particle size distribution, bulk density, water holding capacity and air capacity), chemical (pH, electrical conductivity, ash, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and heavy metals content) and biological properties (phytotoxicity) were analyzed. Results: All materials showed water holding capacity >40% (threshold considered sufficient on the base of peat-related classification), except for coir and hemp with large particle size and marc that registered a poor water-holding capacity (<40% retained water). The pH of the base materials was different with values ranging between 6.21 and 9.05. Compost and marc showed high values of electrical conductivity and copper content (and heavy metals for green compost) and a possible negative influence on germination of cress as resulting from the bioassay. Conclusion: Physical, chemical and biological properties of the materials suggested that coir has the potential to partially or totally replace peat, whereas marc and compost require to be mixed with other materials or properly select the source-of-origin materials before processing

Exposure-Tolerant Imaging Solution forCultural Heritage Monitoring

No full text
This paper describes a simple and cheap solution specifically designed for monitoring the degradation of thin coatings employed for metal protection. The proposed solution employs a commercial photocamera and a frequency-domain-based approach that is capable of highlighting the surface uniformity changes due to initial corrosion. Even though the proposed solution is specifically designed to monitor the long-time performance of protective coatings employed for the restoration of silver artifacts, it can be successfully used also for assessing the conservation state of other ancient metallic works of art. The proposed solution is made tolerant to exposure changes by using a procedure for sensor nonlinearity identification and correction, does not require a precise lighting control, and employs only free open-source software, so that its overall cost is very low and can be used also by not specifically trained operator

Stillbirth: issues and new insights

No full text
Disparities in stillbirth (SB) are mainly related to socioeconomic factors. Developing countries have a SB rate five-times higher than that of developed countries, one-third of which occur intrapartum. Instead, in developed countries the access to antenatal care became the first preventive intervention for SB. In this article, we summarize strategies for SB prevention in the developing and developed world. Moreover, we report a critical evaluation of the six most used classification systems, highlighting the best performer. Similarly, we summarize the necessary diagnostic examinations for an appropriate classification of SB. Some of the new lines of investigation are reported here. However, any new finding on the cause of SB has to acknowledge a model of interpretation that takes into account a triad; the fetus and its characteristics, the uterine environment and the circumstances of death

Infant-Directed Speech to preterm infants: the influence of severe prematurity and maternal depressive symptoms.

Introduction Severe preterm birth represents a risk factor for maternal perinatal depression and the quality of early dyadic interactions in the first year postpartum (Agostini et al., 2014; Neri et al., 2015). However, only few studies explored the effect of preterm condition on interactive exchanges, including maternal verbal input (Herrera et al., 2004; Suttora & Salerni, 2011), and no one considered the role played by severity of prematurity. Aim The study aimed to explore the influence of prematurity and maternal depression on functional and morpho-syntactic features of maternal Infant-Directed Speech, comparing dyads of Extremely Low Birth Weight (ELBW; <1000 gr.), Very Low Birth Weight (VLBW; 1000-1500 gr) and Full-Term (FT) babies. Material and Methods Sixty mother-infant dyads (15 ELBW, 15 VLBW, 30 FT) were recruited and participated in a 5 min free interaction session at both 3 and 9 months postpartum. Lexical, syntactic, and functional features of maternal input during the interaction were analyzed using the CHILDES software. All mothers completed Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (Cox et al.,1987) to assess depressive symptoms. At 3 months, maternal IDS in high-risk condition (ELBW preterm condition and depression) was characterized by a lower frequency of affect-salient speech and a higher proportion of informationsalient speech and questions. At 9 months, IDS of depressed mothers was characterized by a lower verbosity and a higher frequency of attention-getter utterances. Conclusions Despite preliminary, these findings highlight that maternal IDS might be influenced by both the presence of depressive symptoms and severe prematurity. Moreover, IDS features seemed to change during the first year postpartum, suggesting the need to monitor the influence of severity of preterm birth and its interaction with postnatal depression on the features of maternal input directed to the infant

Strawberry plant architecture in different cultivation systems

No full text
The architectural behaviour of the strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa) is determined by many factors, including abiotic, agronomic, nutritional and environmental factors or the presence of stress. Our analysis of plant architecture detects and records the fate of all the meristems and scores the developmental stages of flower organs. The application of different growing techniques may guide the enhancement of vegetative or reproductive growth. Plants from different cultivation systems were dissected to determine plant architecture (number of stolons, number and topology of inflorescences, developmental stage of reproductive organs) and evaluate crop potential and plant quality in relation to production systems. These studies show that it may be possible to design production practices that promote vegetative or reproductive growth
