Childhood in the works of Silvina Ocampo and Alejandra Pizarnik

    No full text
This thesis explores childhood as theme and perspective in the Argentine cuentista and poet Silvina Ocampo (1903-1993) and traces this thematic and vital link to the Argentine poet Alejandra Pizamik (1936-1972). The study looks at childhood not only in relation to their literary texts but also in the writers' construction of self-identity within their socio-literary context, and at the role played by visual art in their aesthetic. Chapter 1 contrasts Silvina with her elder sister Victoria Ocampo through their differing literary appropriation of a shared childhood. It distinguishes Ocampo from Adolfo Bioy Casares and Jorge Luis Borges in terms of her fictional logic and her treatment of games, drawing comparisons instead with Julio Cortdzar. Chapter 2 undertakes close reading of various Ocampo texts, including some for children, in order to explore her vision of childhood through nostalgia, adult-child power relationships, aging and rejuvenation, and moments of initiation or imitation. Chapter 3 turns to Pizarnik and the myth of the child-poet. It analyses her child personae through Andre Breton's Surrealism, Jean Cocteau and Octavio Paz, through her borrowings from Alice in Wonderland and Nadja, and through her obsession with madness, death, orphanhood, violation and transgression. Chapter 4 is comparative. It outlines the context in which Ocampo and Pizamik's passionate friendship developed, and considers Pizamik's essay on Elpecado mortal. It then explores their broad mutual literary and thematic affinities. My conclusion is that Ocampo's works achieve equilibrium between childhood and age, whereas Pizarnik's much-discussed poetic crisis of exile from language itself parallels her deep sense of anxiety at being exiled from the world of childhood. This thesis contributes to the study of Argentine literature by drawing revealing comparisons between two key writers through their shared obsession with childhood, arguing that an understanding of their attitudes to childhood is fundamental to appreciating fully their work. I refer to unpublished letters of Ocampo, material from private interviews, photographs and relevant paintings by Leonor Fini, Alicia Carletti and others

On the turbulence induced by non-breaking surface waves

Upper ocean turbulence is a very relevant process within the context of quantifying the exchange between the atmosphere and the ocean. We present results of a study of turbulence induced by non-breaking waves from detailed observation in a small wave tank facility in the Faculty of Marine Science of the University of Baja California. The experiments were carried out with mechanically generated monochromatic waves in a tank of approximately 12m x 0.5m x 0.3m with a varying steepness (ak) from about 0.02 to 0.18, and detailed measurements of the vertical profile of the 3d velocity field within a water column of about 0.035 m in length. Routine data quality control includes the use of only high beam correlation signal within each of the acoustic beams used by the profiler. A rotation matrix was applied to the velocity data matrix in order to secure that the x, y, and z axes were properly aligned with the wave tank. Rather low wave reflection was obtained through the implementation of a beach at the end of the wave tank. The intermittent character of the turbulence present is shown as a region following the -5/3 power law in the spectrum. Nevertheless, this spectral shape is being observed in most of our experimental results, particularly in those where the wave steepness was not too small. Root mean square values are obtained from the turbulent fluctuations time series to evaluate an integral quantity to characterize the turbulence intensity. This intensity is analyzed in terms of the wave steepness showing a linear relationship. The turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate is also estimated and the relevance of the velocity spectra directly estimated over a limited number of wavenumber bands is addressed. Cold exposure and sleep in the rat: REM sleep homeostasis and body size

    No full text
Study Objectives: Exposure to low ambient temperature (Ta) depresses REM sleep (REMS) occurrence. In this study, both short and long-term homeostatic aspects of REMS regulation were analyzed during cold exposure and during subsequent recovery at Ta 24 degrees C. Design: EEG activity, hypothalamic temperature, and motor activity were studied during a 24-h exposure to Tas ranging from 10 degrees C to -10 degrees C and for 4 days during recovery. Setting: Laboratory of Physiological Regulation during the Wake-Sleep Cycle, Department of Human and General Physiology, Alma Mater Studiorum-University of Bologna. Subjects: 24 male albino rats. Interventions: Animals were implanted with electrodes for EEG recording and a thermistor to measure hypothalamic temperature. Measurements and Results: REMS occurrence decreased proportionally with cold exposure, but a fast compensatory REMS rebound occurred during the first day of recovery when the previous loss went beyond a "fast rebound" threshold corresponding to 22% of the daily REMS need. A slow REMS rebound apparently allowed the animals to fully restore the previous REMS loss during the following 3 days of recovery. Conclusion: Comparing the present data on rats with data from earlier studies on cats and humans, it appears that small mammals have less tolerance for REMS loss than large ones. In small mammals, this low tolerance may be responsible on a short-term basis for the shorter wake-sleep cycle, and on long-term basis, for the higher percentage of REMS that is quickly recovered following REMS deprivation
