From product innovation to competitive advantage: evidence from the case of Turri & Boari

    No full text
The objective of this paper is to demonstrate how a company can differentiate itselfin the market for the long term through its initial product innovation. By employing qualitative analysis through in-depth interviews, we investigate the organisational and strategic factors that are useful for maintaining long-term competitive advantage that results from product innovation. The originality and significance of this study lies in its investigation of an entiresector observed through 100 per cent of its (national) businesses and its highlighting of distinctive features of individual companies. Turri & Wingamm is a product-innovation case that demonstrates rather n process that led to organisational innovation. Turri & Boari operates in a niche that arose independently in the early 1980s, andhas maintained its position in the market over time thanks to careful management of almostevery aspect of production, and its organisational and commercial strategies. The conclusions of this case study can be applied to companies from different sectors working under the same conditions, that is, innovative companies that offer specialty and experience goods in a niche market

Drug-Dosing Adjustment in Dogs and Cats with Chronic Kidney Disease

    No full text
Chronic kidney disease is a common kidney disorder in adult and aged dogs and cats; the management of associated complications and comorbidities generally requires a life-long medical treatment to ensure a good quality of life of affected patients. However, indications and the literature on drug dosing in dogs and cats with chronic kidney disease are often lacking. The aim of this review is to revise the current literature on drug dosing in canine and feline patients with renal impairment, with a special focus on the most commonly used medications to manage chronic kidney disease and possible comorbidities

Monumenti commemorativi alla Vittoria e ai Caduti della Prima guerra mondiale

After the First World War in Italy many city committees and associations were born, the purpose of which was to commemorate the dead for the homeland. Italy had suffered considerable damage and, above all, many human losses. Many architects and artists gathered to organize competitions and projects for the construction of memorials to Victory and peace. Adam Boari was the author of important projects in both San Michele del Carso and Milan. This contribution analyzes two projects not realized but proposed by Adam Boari who had participated in these public competitions

Type 1 diabetes mellitus and hyperadrenocorticism in a ferret

Diabetes mellitus (DM) was diagnosed in a 6-year-old neutered male ferret with polyuria/polydipsia, symmetrical alopecia, and weight loss. Laboratory tests revealed severe hyperglycemia, glucosuria, and increased steroid hormone profile. Abdominal ultrasound revealed a bilateral enlargement of the adrenal glands. Significant clinical improvement was achieved with insulin-and leuprolide acetate-based therapy. After 2 months of therapy, the ferret showed a severe ketoacidosis, and the owner decided to euthanize the animal. Histological findings revealed carcinoma of the left adrenal cortex and cortical hyperplasia of the right adrenal gland. Moderate, chronic, and active pancreatitis with a marked decrease in the number of beta-cells was also present. This is the first reported case of type 1 DM associated with hyperadrenocorticism and chronic pancreatitis in a ferret.[...

Can precise irrigation support the sustainability of protected cultivation? A life-cycle assessment and life-cycle cost analysis

To address sustainability challenges, agricultural advances in Mediterranean horticultural systems will necessitate a paradigmatic shift toward smart technologies, the impacts of which from a life cycle perspective have to be explored. Using life cycle thinking approaches, this study evaluated the synergistic environmental and economic performance of precise irrigation in greenhouse Zucchini production following a cradle-to-farm gate perspective. A cloud-based decision support system and a sensor-based irrigation management system (both referred to as “smart irrigation” approaches) were analyzed and compared to the farmer’s experience-based irrigation. The potential environmental indicators were quantified using life cycle assessment (LCA) with the ReCiPe 2016 method. For the economic analysis, life cycle costing (LCC) was applied, accounting not only for private product costs but also for so-called “hidden” or “external” environmental costs by monetizing LCA results. Smart irrigation practices exhibited similar performance, consuming on average 38.2% less irrigation water and energy, thus generating environmental benefits ranging from 0.17% to 62%. Single score results indicated that life cycle environmental benefits are up to 13% per ton of product. The cost-benefit analysis results showed that even though the implementation of smart irrigation imposes upfront investment costs, these costs are offset by the benefits to water and energy conservation associated with these practices. The reduction of investment costs and higher water costs in future, and lower internal rate of return can further enhance the profitability of smart irrigation strategies. The overall results of this study highlight that smart and innovative irrigation practices can enhance water-energy efficiency, gaining an economic advantage while also reducing the environmental burdens of greenhouse cultivation in a Mediterranean context
