INDIRECT SAMPLING in the CONTEXT of DUAL FRAME SURVEYS
Under-coverage is one of the most common problems of sampling frames. To reduce the impact of coverage error on survey estimates several frames can be combined in order to achieve a complete (or nearly complete) coverage of the target population. Multiple frame estimators have been developed to be used in the context of multiple frame surveys. Sampling frames may overlap which is the case when a single unit of the sampling frame is related with more than one element of the target population. Indirect sampling (Lavallée, 1995) is an alternative approach to classical sampling theory in dealing with the overlapping problem of sampling frames on survey estimates. Not infrequently a survey may need more than one sampling frame in order to improve coverage and simultaneously the sampling frame overlap. In this paper a new class of estimators is presented which is the result from merging multiple frames estimators (only the particular case of dual frames will be presented) with indirect sampling estimators in order to bring together in a single estimator the effect of several frames on survey estimates.Indirect Sampling, Generalized Weight Share Method, Dual Frame Surveys

Robust gait recognition from extremely low frame-rate videos
In this paper, we propose a gait recognition method for extremely low frame-rate videos. Different from the popular temporal reconstruction-based methods, the proposed method uses the average gait over the whole sequence as input feature template. Assuming the effect caused by extremely low frame-rate or large gait fluctuations are intra-class variations that the gallery data fails to capture, we build a general model based on random subspace method. More specifically, a number of weak classifiers are combined to reduce the generalization errors. We evaluate our method on the OU-ISIR-D dataset with large/small gait fluctuations, and very competitive results are achieved when both the probe and gallery are extremely low frame-rate gait sequences (e.g., 1 fps)
The Lightweight Design of a Dump Truck Frame based on Dynamic Responses
This paper develops a new scheme for the
lightweight design of heavy dump truck frames based on the
characteristics of dynamic responses. The dynamic response
is predicted using a finite element (FE) model which is
verified by an experimental mode analysis. The FE model is
then used to investigate the characteristics of dynamic
responses and frame weight changes with respect to the
mass changes of each frame component for selecting
significant components. An optimization is finally developed
for the lightweight design under constrains that maintain
required dynamic responses and static strength. The
optimization results show that the weight of frame can be
reduced by 8%, showing that the scheme is an effective way
to achieve automotive lightweight design
Imaging Scheme for 3-D High-Frame-Rate Intracardiac Echography: A Simulation Study
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia and is normally treated by RF ablation. Intracardiac echography (ICE) is widely employed during RF ablation procedures to guide the electrophysiologist in navigating the ablation catheter, although only 2-D probes are currently clinically used. A 3-D ICE catheter would not only improve visualization of the atrium and ablation catheter, but it might also provide the 3-D mapping of the electromechanical wave (EW) propagation pattern, which represents the mechanical response of cardiac tissue to electrical activity. The detection of this EW needs 3-D high-frame-rate imaging, which is generally only realizable in tradeoff with channel count and image quality. In this simulation-based study, we propose a high volume rate imaging scheme for a 3-D ICE probe design that employs 1-D micro-beamforming in the elevation direction. Such a probe can achieve a high frame rate while reducing the channel count sufficiently for realization in a 10-Fr catheter. To suppress the grating-lobe (GL) artifacts associated with micro-beamforming in the elevation direction, a limited number of fan-shaped beams with a wide azimuthal and narrow elevational opening angle are sequentially steered to insonify slices of the region of interest. An angular weighted averaging of reconstructed subvolumes further reduces the GL artifacts. We optimize the transmit beam divergence and central frequency based on the required image quality for EW imaging (EWI). Numerical simulation results show that a set of seven fan-shaped transmission beams can provide a frame rate of 1000 Hz and a sufficient spatial resolution to visualize the EW propagation on a large 3-D surface. Governing Low Profile Issues: A Frame Analysis of Drug Addiction in a Local Setting
Frame analysis was developed by Erving Goffman as a sociological concept, used for understanding how individual actors relate themselves to the world, creating coherent frames out of individual social experiences. We apply frame analysis in the emergent field of sociology of governance, using the example of low profile public issue of drug addiction in a specific local social and political context of a municipality in Bosnia and Herzegovina, in order to understand the roles of governance actors and their social interactions in the attribution of meaning. We focus on mental organization of governance experiences related to drug addiction and the strategic involvement of different governance actors which use given frames. We discuss the importance of frame coherence and ways in which it can be achieved for the low profile issues.Frame Analysis, Sociology of Governance, Low Profile Issues, Frame Coherence
New Stationary Frame Control Scheme for Three Phase PWM Rectifiers Under Unbalanced Voltage Dips Conditions
A new stationary frame control scheme for three-phase pulsewidth-modulation (PWM) rectifiers operating under unbalanced voltage dips conditions is proposed in this paper. The proposed control scheme regulates the instantaneous active power at the converter poles to minimize the harmonics of the input currents and the output voltage ripple. This paper's novelty is the development of a new current-reference generator implemented directly in stationary reference frame. This allows using proportional sinusoidal signal integrator (P-SSI) controllers for simultaneous compensation of both positive and negative current sequence components. No phase-locked loop (PLL) strategies and coordinate transformations are needed for the proposed current-reference generator. Experimental results are presented for a 20-kV A alternative current (ac)/direct current (dc) converter prototype to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme. A comparison with two other existing control techniques is also performed. Fast dynamic performance with small dc-link voltage ripple and input sinusoidal currents are obtained with this control scheme, even under severe voltage dips operating condition
From Within the Frame Storytelling in African-American Studies
The book explores the written representation of African-American oral storytelling from Charles Chesnutt, Zora Neale Hurston and Ralph Ellison to James Alan McPherson, Toni Cade Bambara and John Edgar Wideman. At its core, the book compares the relationship of the "frame tale"-an inside-the-text storyteller telling a tale to an inside-the-text listener-with the relationship between the outside-the-text writer and reader. The progression is from Chesnutt's 1899 frame texts, in which the black spoken voice is contained by a white narrator/listener, to Bambara's sixties-era example of a "frameless" spoken voice text, to Wideman's neo-frame text of the late 20th century.Cover -- FROM WITHIN THE FRAME: Storytelling in African-American Fiction -- Copyright -- Contents -- Acknowledgments -- Introduction -- CHAPTER 1 "A little personal attention": Storytelling and the Black Audience in Charles W. The role of Scene Type and Priming in the processing and selection of a spatial frame of reference
Johannsen K, de Ruiter J. The role of Scene Type and Priming in the processing and selection of a spatial frame of reference. Frontiers in Psychology. 2013;4:182.The selection and processing of a spatial frame of reference (FOR) in interpreting verbal scene descriptions is of great interest to psycholinguistics. In this study, we focus on the choice between the relative and the intrinsic FOR, addressing two questions: (a) does the presence or absence of a background in the scene influence the selection of a FOR, and (b) what is the effect of a previously selected FOR on the subsequent processing of a different FOR. Our results show that if a scene includes a realistic background, this will make the selection of the relative FOR more likely. We attribute this effect to the facilitation of mental simulation, which enhances the relation between the viewer and the objects. With respect to the response accuracy, we found both a higher (with the same FOR) and a lower accuracy (with a different FOR), while for the response latencies, we only found a delay effect with a different FOR
Curing Cholera: Pathogens, Places and Poverty in South Asia
In this paper I will seek to provide a new understanding of endemicity of disease in India. Through a study of cholera research in the twentieth century I will argue that disease and its endemicity has to be understood in biological factors as well as within a wider social and economic context. I will discuss the medical efforts at locating the causality of cholera from the nineteenth century in Indian climate, water bodies and human anatomy to show that cholera is no more a biological phenomena than water is an ecological or environmental problem. Both are essentially political and economic questions
