Tracing the development of contemporary park-city relationships: Parc de La Villette and Parc André Citroën (paper + presentation)
Since the late post--?war period the relationship between park and city has significantly altered. Parks established between 1980 and 2000 in Paris --? in particular Parc de La Villette and Parc André Citroën – exemplify developments in park design and the park--?city relationship in this period and form precedents for many subsequent parks worldwide. Park designation in this period was related to the reform of public (open) space policy by urban administrations in many European cities in the early 1980s. Parc de La Villette and Parc André Citroën were also seen as tools for spatial, economic and social urban regeneration, and as vehicles for political expression. Developments in the park--?city relationship in Parc de La Villette and Parc André Citroën were influenced by their location on former industrial sites; obsolete urban territories were designated as sites for green space, nature and landscape. They necessitated the translation of urban artifacts into landscape space. In these parks there was little ‘former’ landscape to work with and the importance of the natural and cultural landscape as a basis for place--?making diminished. At the same time layers of urban history were integrated into designs. La Villette demonstrates a new and extensive interrelationship between park and city on a spatial--? morphological level with the integration of canals, squares and threshold buildings in the design. Moreover, a folie grid was superimposed over the park as an urban layer. The result is a fundamental shift in the distinction between city and park. Site conditions and compositional schemes in both parks resulted in the blurring of the park ‘edge’ and its extension into the city. City form thus became a landscape architectonic problem again – as city form in Paris was historically a landscape architectonic activity.UrbanismArchitectur
Resenha de Pandemic and crisis of democracy de André Duarte
Pandemic and crisis of democracy by André Duarte (2023) shows clearly how the misgovernment of Jail Bolsonaro was linked with the lack of trust in democracy and with her crisis. Duarte reflects from the present about the different consequences of Brazil’s recent past, specifically during the COVID-19 crisis. The author adopts a theoretical attitude that allows him to think the particular situation of Brazil from the perspective of several authors, among which we highlight the figure of Hannah Arendt.
André Leroi-Gourhan (25th August 1911 – 19th February 1986) A short biography of André Leroi-Gourhan is here presented, beginning in 1927, at the moment of his student years, until his retirement in 1982. It rests on a systematic analysis of his publications and on his personal and professional archives, collected and studied for the first time in 2001 when the author was temporally engaged by the CNRS. Going beyond the pure biography of events, such as those already presented in numerous posthumous tributes, from 1986 to 1988, this article is instead a short examination of the connections and the continuities present in his work. It evokes A. Leroi-Gourhan’s research and teaching across the many disciplines he pursued : orientalism, philology, ethnology, history of art and religions, early technology, zoology, human geography, and prehistoric archeology. The article traces the main outlines of the four major periods of his professional activity, with the goal of underlining the coherence that unites them, and also the accidents of circumstances : his education and the period of orientalism (1927-1944), the time of his doctoral studies and of ethnology (1944-1955), the early period of prehistory (1952-1965), and his second foray into prehistory (1965-1986). The first period is marked above all by physical anthropology, learning from Marcel Mauss, the study about expositions in the musée de l’Homme under the direction of Georges Henri Rivière, oriental languages with Paul Boyer and Marcel Granet, not to forget his formative sejour in Japan from 1937 to 1939. The second period is that of the PhD in art and sciences, to make it possible for A. Leroi-Gourhan to teach the two approaches to ethnology as he conceived them, closely interweaving technological man and biological man. After 1952, his orientation toward prehistory is definitively affirmed, whether he conceived as proofs to support his ideas about technology in ethnology, or the interpretation of Western prehistoric art. This new orientation can be perceived equally in the organization of his fieldwork expeditions and the centers where he formed researchers. In effect, from 1944 to 1986, and complementary to his own research, his activity as laboratory director would be determinant, for himself as well as for his teaching. The last part of his life, after 1965, is marked by progressive illness, but also by his participation in the direction of public research and cultural institutions, and, after 1969, by courses given at the Collège de France

After the early years following the discovery of the Americas, the Spanish Crown promoted expanding and ongoing trade with the New World. Many of these commercial products were transported across the Atlantic in pottery vessels to meet the demands of Spaniards and their descendants as colonial society grew. In history and anthropology, there is an interest in studying the origin of such earthenware jugs, better known as olive jars or botijas, which were originally intended for sixteenth- to eighteenth-century transoceanic trade and later for other purposes. This is the case of the documented use of Iberian botijas in nuptial ceremonies in the community of Xalitla and other towns in the Balsas region of the state of Guerrero, where their primary function as containers for liquids has not changed through time, but has acquired a new social use related to ritual performances
