Short Communication. The impact of bird’s nest ferns on stemflow nutrient concentration in a primary rain forest, Sabah, Malaysia

No full text
Bird's nest ferns (Asplenium nidus complex) (Yatabe & Murakami 2003) are common epiphytes of the Old World tropics and house a high abundance of arthropods (Ellwood & Foster 2004). Through interception and retention of leaf litter (Paoletti et al. 1991, Piggott 1996, Richardson 1999), epiphytes interrupt litterfall dynamics (Clark et al. 1998, Nadkarni & Matelson 1991) and delay the return of nutrients to the forest floor (Nadkarni 1984). Precipitation percolating through the canopy as throughfall is enriched as nutrients are leached from plant surfaces (Levia & Frost 2006). Water flowing down the trunk of trees as stemflow is further enriched from prolonged contact and accumulated nutrient deposits on the trunk (Levia & Frost 2003, Liu et al. 2002). Epiphytes can alter stemflow nutrient concentrations by slowing water percolation and by nutrient uptake and release (Awasthi et al. 1995, Strigel et al. 1994)

Pre-Biblical and Old Testament rape law parallels: recurring androcentric themes in historic Biblical text

No full text
Rape legislation in ancient Near Eastern texts is very slanted in respect to a pervasive androcentric ideology that drives the punitive outcomes. Unfortunately, evidence shows the lives of women in terms of their perceived societal value are affected (often negatively) in regard to their social status; regardless of region or period. Women did not wield much social power in ancient times and the laws demonstrate resolutions for prescribed transgressions that neglected to include any consideration for the viewpoint of women; who were the primary victims of the rape offense. As a result, women suffered and were historically antagonized by the these laws which failed to protect them. This research will illuminate the disparities by examining the laws in various regions of the period and challenge the underlying themes.M.A.L.S.Includes bibliographical referencesby Jake J. Jone

Esophageal replacement by gastric transposition: a single surgeon's experiences from a tertiary pediatric surgical center

No full text
Background: many pediatric surgeons have limited experience of esophageal replacement. This study reports outcomes of esophageal replacement by gastric transposition performed by a single UK-based pediatric surgeon. Methods: consecutive patients were identified who underwent esophageal replacement by gastric transposition over a 28 year period. Clinical and demographic data were collected. Weight-for-age Zscores were calculated for esophageal atresia patients. Results: nineteen patients were identified. Indication in the majority was long-gap esophageal atresia (n=17; 10 with tracheo-esophageal fistula). At surgery, median age was 8.5 months (range 2-55), median weight was 7.4kg (range 4.0-17.4kg). A right-sided thoracotomy or trans-hiatal approach was used. Median post-operative length of stay was 17.5 days (range 7-130), median intensive care stay wasthree days (range 1- 63). There were no deaths. Anastomotic leak rate at 30 days was 10.5% (n=2). One patient required early stricture dilatation. Median weight-for-age Z-score increased from -2.17 at one year of age to -1.86, -1.70 and -1.93 at 5, 10 and 15 years. Conclusions: esophageal replacement by gastric transposition offers a potentially life-changing treatment however is associated with significant morbidity. The majority of patients eventually achieve full oral feeding and maintenance of weight gain trajectory. A right-sided approach to the esophagus is feasible
