Chiral anomaly, induced current, and vacuum polarization tensor for a Dirac field in the presence of a defect

    No full text
We evaluate the vacuum polarization tensor (VPT) for a massless Dirac field in 1+1 and 3+1 dimensions, in the presence of a particular kind of defect, which in a special limit imposes bag boundary conditions. We also show that the chiral anomaly in the presence of such a defect is the same as when no defects are present, both in 1+1 and 3+1 dimensions. This implies that the induced vacuum current in 1+1 dimensions due to the lowest order VPT is exact.Fil: Fosco, Cesar Daniel. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. From D = 3 to D = 2 dimensions: A note on topological order

    No full text
We construct, by a procedure involving a dimensional reduction from a ChernSimons theory with borders, an effective theory for 1 + 1 dimensional superconductor. That system can be either in an ordinary phase or in a topological one, depending on the value of two phases, corresponding to complex order parameters. Finally, we argue that the original theory and its dimensionally reduced one can be related to the effective action for a quantum Dirac field in a slab geometry, coupled to a gauge field.Fil: Fosco, Cesar Daniel. Electromagnetic Lifshitz Formula for Small-Width Mirrors from Functional Determinants

    No full text
We extend a recently proposed Quantum Field Theory (QFT) approach to the Lifshitz formula, originally implemented for a real scalar field, to the case of a fluctuating vacuum Electromagnetic (EM) field, coupled to two flat, parallel mirrors. The general result is presented in terms of the invariants of the vacuum polarization tensors due to the media on each mirror. We consider mirrors that have small widths, with the zero-width limit as a particular case. We apply the latter to models involving graphene sheets, obtaining results which are consistent with previous ones.Fil: Fosco, Cesar Daniel. Comisión Nacional de Energía Atómica. Vacuum fluctuations in the presence of nonlinear boundary conditions

    No full text
We consider a system consisting of a quantum, massless, real scalar field, in the presence of nonlinear mirrors: infinite parallel planes, upon which the field satisfies nonlinear boundary conditions. These may appear, for example, in metamaterials having nonlinear response functions. The boundary conditions are implemented by nonquadratic interaction vertices, strictly localized on the mirrors. By using the appropriate perturbative expansions, we obtain approximate expressions for the Casimir energy corresponding to weak coupling, regarding the strength of the interaction terms. We also comment on an alternative expansion scheme that may be useful when the weak coupling expansion is not justified.Fil: Fosco, Cesar Daniel. Comisión Nacional de Energía Atómica. A non Abelian effective model for ensembles of magnetic defects in 3D Yang–Mills theory

    No full text
We construct a non Abelian model for SU(2) Yang–Mills theory in an Euclidean three-dimensional spacetime and study its different phases. The model contains a center vortex sector coupled to a dual effective field encoding information about how the vortices are paired in the ensemble. The possible phases in the parameter space are interpreted in terms of the proliferation of either closed center vortices or closed chains, where the endpoints of open vortices are attached in pairs to monopole-like defects.Fil: Fosco, Cesar Daniel. Quantum dissipative effects for a real scalar field coupled to a time-dependent Dirichlet surface in d + 1 dimensions

    No full text
We study the dynamical Casimir effect for a real scalar field φ in d+1 dimensions, in the presence of a mirror that imposes Dirichlet boundary conditions and undergoes time-dependent motion or deformation. Using a perturbative approach, we expand in powers of the deviation of the mirror’s surface Σ from a hyperplane, up to fourth order. General expressions for the probability of pair creation induced by motion are derived, and we analyze the impact of space-time dimensionality as well as of the nonlinear effects introduced by the fourth-order terms.Fil: Fosco, Cesar Daniel. Dynamical Casimir effect from fermions in an oscillating bag in 1+1 dimensions

    No full text
We evaluate dissipative effects for a system consisting of a massive Dirac field confined between two walls, one of them oscillating, in 1+1 dimensions. In the model that we consider, a dimensionless parameter characterizing each wall is tuned so that bag-boundary conditions are attained for a particular value. We present explicit results for the probability of creating a fermion pair, and relate the total probability to the imaginary part of the effective action.Fil: Fosco, Cesar Daniel. Difference between the vacuum Casimir energies for grounded and isolated conductors

    No full text
We study the vacuum (i.e., zero-temperature) Casimir energy for a system of neutral conductors which are isolated, as opposed to grounded. The former is meant to describe a situation where the total charge on each conductor, as well as all of its fluctuations, vanishes, while the latter describes a situation where the conductors are connected to a charge reservoir. We compute the difference between the vacuum energies for a given system of conductors, but subjected to the two different conditions stated above. The results can be written in terms of a generalized, frequency-dependent capacitance matrix of the system. Using a multipolar expansion, we show that the grounded Casimir energy includes a monopole-monopole interaction term that is absent in the isolated case in the large distance limit.Fil: Fosco, Cesar Daniel. Casimir free energy at high temperatures: Grounded versus isolated conductors

    No full text
We evaluate the difference between the Casimir free energies corresponding to either grounded or isolated perfect conductors, at high temperatures. We show that a general and simple expression for that difference can be given, in terms of the electrostatic capacitance matrix for the system of conductors. For the case of close conductors, we provide approximate expressions for that difference, by evaluating the capacitance matrix using the proximity force approximation. Since the high-temperature limit for the Casimir free energy for a medium described by a frequency-dependent conductivity diverging at zero frequency coincides with that of an isolated conductor, our results may shed light on the corrections to the Casimir force in the presence of real materials.Fil: Fosco, Cesar Daniel. Derivative expansion for the electromagnetic and Neumann-Casimir effects in 2+1 dimensions with imperfect mirrors

    No full text
We calculate the Casimir interaction energy in d = 2 spatial dimensions between two (zero-width) mirrors -one flat and the other slightly curved- upon which imperfect conductor boundary conditions are imposed for an electromagnetic (EM) field. Our main result is a second-order derivative expansion (DE) approximation for the Casimir energy, which is studied in different interesting limits. In particular, we focus on the emergence of a nonanalyticity beyond the leading-order term in the DE, when approaching the limit of perfectly conducting mirrors. We also show that the system considered is equivalent to a dual one, consisting of a massless real scalar field satisfying imperfect Neumann conditions (on the very same boundaries). Therefore, the results obtained for the EM field hold true also for the scalar field model.Fil: Fosco, Cesar Daniel. Comisión Nacional de Energía Atómica. Gerencia del Área de Energía Nuclear.
