The interconnectedness of identity, power and justice
Brindley J Fortuin revisits the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the formation of post-Apartheid national identity in South Africa
The Half-Life of Apartheid: How South Africa’s Segregated Past Impedes a United Future
Brindley Fortuin investigates how the segregation of apartheid South Africa contextualises contemporary racial distinctions and continue to factor in present day race relations
Tilting at Windmills : BLDSC and the UK Higher Education Community
Purpose - To provide an overview of, the relationship between the British Library and higher education libraries in the 1990s, with particular relation to document supply. It also goes on to explore current developments in scholarly communication. Design/methodology/approach - The author played a role in several of the events described and uses the available literature to enlarge on a personal view of that decade. Findings - The paper shows that the relationship was a strained one caused in part by a mismatch of resources, but is in any case dwarfed by the larger external forces and changing opportunities and technologies for scholarly communication. Originality/value - Provides a record of the period
Pharmacogenetics of ophthalmic topical β-blockers
Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide. The primary glaucoma risk factor is elevated intraocular pressure. Topical β-blockers are affordable and widely used to lower intraocular pressure. Genetic variability has been postulated to contribute to interpersonal differences in efficacy and safety of topical β-blockers. This review summarizes clinically significant polymorphisms that have been identified in the β-adrenergic receptors (ADRB1, ADRB2 and ADRB3). The implications of polymorphisms in CYP2D6 are also discussed. Although the candidate-gene approach has facilitated significant progress in our understanding of the genetic basis of glaucoma treatment response, most drug responses involve a large number of genes, each containing multiple polymorphisms. Genome-wide association studies may yield a more comprehensive set of polymorphisms associated with glaucoma outcomes. An understanding of the genetic mechanisms associated with variability in individual responses to topical β-blockers may advance individualized treatment at a lower cost

The shaping of student knowledge: learning with dynamic geometry software
The focus of this paper is a software genre usually referred to as ‘dynamic geometry’ because of the ability of the user to dynamically manipulate geometrical figures created with the software tool. Using data from a longitudinal study of 12-13 students’ use of dynamic geometry software, the focus of the analysis is on the interpretations the students make of geometrical objects and relationships when using this form of software. The analysis suggests that the students’ mathematical reasoning is shaped by their interactions with the software in that their ability to explain geometrical facts and relationships evolves from imprecise, ‘everyday’ expressions, through reasoning that is overtly mediated by the software environment, to mathematical explanations of the geometric situation that transcend the particular tool being used. Such findings suggest that curriculum initiatives that encourage the use of dynamic geometry software are appropriate but that the incorporation of such software into classroom practices is unlikely to be straightforward
Guide to the nature and methods of analysis of the clay fraction of tephras from the South Auckland region, New Zealand.
The manual outlines some of the more common laboratory procedures available for qualitatively and quantitatively analysing the composition of the tephric clays, many of which are difficult to determine because of their short range order or 'amorphous' nature. Techniques described and assessed in terms of their rapidity and quantitativeness include XRD, IR, DTA, TEM and SEM, sodium fluoride reactivity, chemical dissolution analyses, and surface area measurements. No one technique alone produces a definitive clay fraction analysis of tephric deposits. -from Author
The challenges of developing an understanding of inclusion as a concept for Chinese teachers
This paper discusses the critical issues in China as it moves towards an inclusive education with a focus on the challenges of developing the concept of inclusion for Chinese teachers. Whilst the laws and regulations have entitled children with a 9-year compulsory education, in practice, children with special educational needs find themselves being integrated rather than included in the mainstream schools. The author argues with a small scale research that the failure to address the needs of children is largely due to the understanding of inclusion, which can be developed through teacher education to meet the challenges of the inadequate professional knowledge and expertise of special education teachers
