Mediterranean Sea Region 1569
Shows Mediterranean Sea region, Europe, Black Sea and northern Africa. Includes dedication text. First copper plate engraved and printed portolan map. This portolan chart by the prominent Italian cartographer and engraver Paolo Forlani is the first sea chart engraved and printed on copperplate. Forlani was born in Verona but flourished in Venice in 1560–74. Most of his maps appeared under the imprint of other publishers, including Giovanni Francesco Camocio, Ferrando Bertelli, and Bolognini Zaltieri in Venice and Claudio Duchetti in Rome―members of the Lafreri school of cartography, some of whose printing plates were still used well into the 17th century. Nominally a map of the Mediterranean Sea region, the map extends as far west as Ireland and north to much of Russia and the Black Sea (labeled as Mare Maggiore). The word portolan derives from portolano, meaning “related to ports or harbors.” Portolan charts were often simple coastal outlines used in navigation with few, if any, inland features shown. The straight lines crisscrossing the chart represent the 32 directions, or headings, of the mariner’s compass from a given point. Coastal place-names are written on the land side of the coastline so as not to obscure possible maritime dangers. Areas of political control are indicated by different colors along the coastline and in some cases by shading of the interior. WDLColo
Sustainable Management of Events in an Experiential Perspective
Events are complex value propositions that are realized by specialists to meet different leisure and entertainment needs. They are highly intangible and experiential-type products (Pencarelli and Forlani 2016) to which the application of logical experience is particularly suitable (Bartolazzi et al. 2008; Pegg and Patterson 2010; Manthiou et al. 2014; Getz and Page 2016). This chapter aims to describe the role played by events in the experience economy for territories involved in sustainable tourism strategies. The authors also propose a model for event impact analysis and evaluation. Starting from the idea that tourist destinations represent a stage on which tourism products can be displayed, so as to satisfy the demands of travelers seeking engaging experiences (Pencarelli and Forlani 2016), the importance of the role played by destination management in managing the events is further underlined. Tourists searching such experiences want to be in the spotlight and co-participate with territorial players in the creation of value. As such, event management requires the use of tools such as planning, organization, and control in order to design, plan, and put on a balanced program of events while monitoring the impact on value creation for both tourists and regional stakeholders within the perspective of sustainability. This chapter proposes to redefine the experiential perspective of a set of indicators that are useful in holistically evaluating the performance of events in a traditional tri-faceted dimension, i.e., economic, social, and environmenta

Natural compounds targeting E. Coli WRBA as antibiofilm agents: Virtual screening, design and synthesis of analogs, biological evaluation
Resistance to antibiotics has become one of the main concerns of modern medicine. This
phenomenon is worsened by biofilm formation, which frequently leads to treatment failures.1 Hence,
anti-biofilm agents represent useful tools in the treatment of microbial infections, increasing the
effectiveness of antibiotics and preventing resistance mechanisms.
Different studies have demonstrated that the protein WrbA plays a key role in the formation of
biofilm in E. coli. Nonetheless, its specific function is still poorly understood, and only a few inhibitors
are reported in the literature.2
For this reason, our research group has worked towards the
identification of new WrbA inhibitors as antibiofilm agents.
Through a target-based virtual database screening, we identified natural products endowed with a
high affinity towards WrbA; the most promising compounds were purchased for biophysical and
biological evaluation.
Hence, we selected a natural scaffold as a starting point to create a new library of organic molecules
and perform a virtual screening. Finally, five compounds were selected to be synthesized and
subjected to biophysical evaluation.
Both the natural and synthetic compounds were tested on recombinant E. coli WrbA by MicroScale
Thermophoresis (MST), which allowed the determination of their dissociation constants (Kd). Among
the natural compounds, one of them displayed a Kd in the nanomolar range. This value was lower
than those measured for both caffeic and zosteric acid, which are known WrbA inhibitors.3 On the
other hand, the synthesized compounds bound WrbA with Kd values in the low micromolar range.
Based on our encouraging results, the inhibitors were assayed on E. coli and S. aureus to verify their
antibiofilm effect. The outcomes of our study will be presented.

Trapping and analyzing Wheland-Meisenheimer sigma-complexes, usually labile and escaping intermediates
For many years our research group’s interest lies in the study of nucleophilic/electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions. We found that when strongly activated substrates are used for mechanistic studies, the classical rules related to the steps involved in this kind of reactions are not always followed. The steps involved in both reactions are the formation of sigma-complexes which are usually not isolable because of their instability, bringing them to a rapid conversion into substitution products.
However, when we used strongly activated species, namely superelectrophiles and supernucleophiles, we have been able to identify, and in some cases to isolate, the related Wheland, Meisenheimer or sigma-complexes that are contemporaneously Wheland and Meisenheimer intermediates. a,b These intermediates are moderately stable and have been identified at low temperature by NMR spectroscopy. On the basis of these findings, we recently developed another supernucleophilic compound (2,4-dipyrrolidinyl-1,3-thiazole (DPT)), which readily reacts with both superelectrophiles 4,6-dinitrotetrazolepyridine (DNTP) and 4,6-dinitrobenzofuroxan (DNBF) to form stable Wheland-Meisenheimer complexes (respectively WM1 and WM2) that we were able to isolate and crystallize, obtaining interesting information from their X-Ray diffraction analysis.2 A theoretical study of these reactions provided us important data about the reaction pathways and the great stability of these complexes.
Nowadays we are studying the reactivity of DPT towards other superelectrophiles to give more informations on the WM complexes and to investigate the mechanisms of aromatic substitution reactions.

The Impact of Services and the Experiential Components on the Global Customer Experience: Preliminary Results from an Italian Art City
Customer experiences emerge from value co-creation processes of companies, customers and the actors of the value eco-system. Customers live experiences as personal events and co- create them according to their level of interest and participation (Pencarelli and Forlani, 2018; Campos et al., 2018; Galvagno and Dalli, 2014; Vargo and Lusch, 2004; Pine and Gilmore, 1999) while companies can provide the platform for the desired customer experiences to emerge (Lemon and Verhoef, 2016; Schmitt, 2003, 1999).
In order to create positive customer experience many elements are necessary: goods, services, and experiential components. The experience factor is increasingly important for the creation of the customer experience (Pencarelli and Forlani, 2018b; Pencarelli et. al. 2017).
Hence, companies should consider in their offerings the impact of goods, services and mainly experiential features on the value creation for customers and the company itself. This aspect has not yet been assigned the appropriate attention in the literature on experiential marketing (Forlani et al., 2018).
This paper is aimed at exploring the impact of services and experiential components on the global customer experience. To this scope, a preliminary study based on data collected for a research on tourism of Urbino (Conti et al. 2016), a Unesco Italian site, was conducted. The findings of this research suggest that positive aspects of customer experience are especially connected to the experiential components while the most perceived negative aspects of the customer experience are connected to bad evaluation of services. In short, the experiential elements of the offer of an art city amplify the perceived value of customer experience of visitors, while services play a very basic role.
From this explorative study, some preliminary theoretical and managerial implications ad directions for future research emerge
