Division of labour and sharing of knowledge for synchronous collaborative information retrieval
Synchronous collaborative information retrieval (SCIR) is concerned with supporting two or more users who search together at the same time in order to satisfy a shared information need. SCIR systems represent a paradigmatic shift in the way we view information retrieval, moving from an individual to a group process and as such the development of novel IR techniques is needed to support this. In this article we present what we believe are two key concepts for the development of effective SCIR namely division of labour (DoL) and sharing of knowledge (SoK). Together these concepts enable coordinated SCIR such that redundancy across group members is reduced whilst enabling each group member to benefit from the discoveries of their collaborators. In this article we outline techniques from state-of-the-art SCIR systems which support these two concepts, primarily through the provision of awareness widgets. We then outline some of our own work into system-mediated techniques for division of labour and sharing of knowledge in SCIR. Finally we conclude with a discussion on some possible future trends for these two coordination techniques

The relationship between leadership competence and employee engagement:
Employee engagement has been shown to lead to a number of meaningful business benefits, including increased productivity, improved individual and organizational performance, and heightened organizational commitment. Although considerable research has demonstrated the influence of line managers on the engagement of their direct reports, Harter, Schmidt, and Hayes (2002) suggest that companies could learn much about the management practices that drive business outcomes by studying their
own highly engaged organizational units. The present study utilized a Fortune 500 multinational corporation’s leadership competency model multi-rater feedback and employee engagement instruments to explore the relationship between the leadership competencies of senior organizational leaders (N=163) and the engagement of employees in their organizational units. The overall model of leadership competence predicted a significant proportion of variance in engagement when utilizing either the direct report or combined
rater source scores. In addition, results indicate that Integrity and Collaboration and Teaming are two specific competencies among senior leaders that appear to have meaningful positive relationships with employee engagement. Contrary to expectations, the bivariate correlation between the Self-Awareness and Adaptability competency of senior leaders and employee engagement was not significant. More surprisingly, when the other competencies were controlled statistically, the relation was negative. Finally,
the direct report rater source provided competency scores that were the best predictors of employee engagement. This raises a possible concern that the relation is partly due to engaged workers providing more positive ratings and, similarly, that less engaged workers provide more negative ratings of their leaders. Results are interpreted in the context of three theoretical perspectives on employee engagement. Limitations, implications for practice, and directions for future research are also discussed.Psy.DIncludes bibliographical references (p. 115-120)by Robert N. Strou
Reactions of n,n-dibromobenzenesulfonamide with alcohols and mercaptans, 1971
N,N-Dibromobenzenesulfonamide reacts with primary alcohols in a 1:2 molar ratio to yield the esters of the alcohols. The reaction is believed to proceed via a free radical mechanism to generate the reac-tive acylbromide species which then reacts with another mole of the alcohol to yield the ester as the final product. Benzyl alcohol and short chain primary alcohols give the corresponding aldehydes as side reactions. NNDBS reacts with secondary alcohols to give ketones and alpha bromoketones. No reaction takes place with tertiary alcohols. N,N-Dibromobenzenesulfonamide reacts with primary, secondary and tertiary mercaptans to yield the disulfide of the mercaptans in each case. When molecular bromine was used as the brominating agent, the alcohols did not react but the corresponding disulfide was obtained from each mercaptan
Robert Buchanan 1841-1901: an assessment of his career.
PhDRobert Buchanan was widely regarded during his
lifetime as a poet of distinction, a capable and powerful
novelist, and a critic of some perception, yet his name is
now associated only with one regrettable episode, while
those of lesser men and women continue to be remembered for
work inferior to his. A man possessing large reserves of
energy, and pressed to write for a living at an early age,
he produced much work that deserves the oblivion it has
found; but his early verse, expressing his profound compassion
for the sufferings of the unfortunate in the simplest
language, some of his ballads, and not a little of his
later more vatic verse, is still worthy of study. As a
novelist his work is provocative and readable, but too
often descends to the level of the sentimental melodrama
which earned him, for a while, a very good income from the
stage. As a critic he was not profound, but was quick to
detect and praise expression of his own sympathy for humanity
that came to represent for him art's highest aspiration;
Dickens, Browning and Whitman were his heroes, and for the
last two he did sterling work in helping them to gain widespread
recognition. As a polemist he rushed into several
arenas, for some of which his talents were not especially
suited; but he publicly supported C. S. Parnell and Oscar
Wilde when few found the courage to do so. An interesting
man of impressive variety and undoubted talent has found an
undeserved neglect, and a full-scale critical biography of
Robert Buchanan is long overdue
Address: Lawrence N. Jones, Reflections on the Ten Year History of SSBR, and a status report
Gyraud Wilmore introduces speaker Lawrence N. Jones (dean of Howard University School of Divinity) as audience members including James and Cecil Cone and Charles Shelby Rooks listen. Jones gives reflections on the history of the Society for the Study of Black Religion. He describes how the Society was born in the turbulent environment after World War II through a detail of events. The events include Willie Ricks "Black power" chant in Greenwood Mississippi in the march on Selma, the founding of the National Committee of Black Churchmen, the Black Declaration of Independence, the Rockefeller brothers support for the Fund for Theological education and the 1970 meeting at the Interdenominational Theological Center. Jones highlights the importance of the theological activity of ITC during the time. Charles Shelby Brooks along with others in the audience contend it was the meeting at the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta where the Society for the Study of Black Religion was first conceived. The Atlanta University Center Robert W.
