Telling the Truth: The Theory and Practice of Documentary Fiction
Barbara Foley here focuses on the relatively neglected genre of documentary fiction: novels that are continually near the borderline between factual and fictive discourse. She links the development of the genre over three centuries to the evolution of capitalism, but her analyses of literary texts depart significantly from those of most current Marxist critics. Foley maintains that Marxist theory has yet to produce a satisfactory theory of mimesis or of the development of genres, and she addresses such key issues as the problem of reference and the nature of generic distinctions. Among the authors whom Foley treats are Defoe, Scott, George Eliot, Joyce, Isherwood, Dos Passos, William Wells Brown, Ishmael Reed, and Ernest Gaines
C# Programming : From Problem Analysis to Program Design
Discover an expert blend of the programming principles and concepts and hands-on coding skills you need to create a strong professional foundation as a beginning C# programmer. The latest edition of C# PROGRAMMING: FROM PROBLEM ANALYSIS TO PROGRAM DESIGN from respected author Dr. Barbara Doyle provides a straightforward approach and understandable vocabulary that make it easy for you to grasp new programming concepts without distraction. This edition introduces a variety of fundamental programming concepts, from data types and expressions to arrays and collections, all using the latest version of today's popular C# language. New programming exercises and engaging, numbered examples throughout this edition reflect the latest updates in Visual Studio 2015 and C# 6.0, while learning objectives, case studies, and Coding Standards summaries in each chapter give you the knowledge and tools you need to master each key concept.xxxi+1000p.;19x23c
Operator-variable binding in the initial state: A cross-linguistic study of VP ellipsis structures in Chinese and English
This paper investigates the claim that the binding relation between an operator and a variable is part of the innate language faculty, in accord with a theory of Universal Grammar. We present results of a study of the acquisition of VP ellipsis structures in Mandarin Chinese. Children from 3 years, 5 months to 6 years, 11 months show early knowledge of the ambiguity in sloppy identity structures and of operator-variable binding. Results are compared to those from an earlier parallel study in English (Foley, Nunez del and 1992a,b,c).Lors d'une étude sur l'acquisition du langage, nous avons testé l'hypothèse que les relations d'opérateur-variable caractérisent la compétence intrinsèque de l'enfant. Guo Fangfang, Foley Claire, Chien Yu-Chin, Chiang Chi-Pang, Lust Barbara. Function Pointers in C - An Empirical Study
Interprocedural analysis requires a statically determinable call multigraph to represent the program. Programs that use function pointers or function-valued variables present a difficult problem for static analysis. In C, function pointers can be formal parameters, actual arguments to functions, or global/local variables. The difficulty of precisely determining the call multigraph of a program { or statically determining the aliases of a function pointer at a call site { depends on the types of function pointers used (i.e., local or global) [ZR94]. In this study, we have statically gathered empirical information on C function pointer usage to better predict appropriate interprocedural analyses required for C programs.Technical report lcsr-TR-24
The impact of renewable energy systems on local sustainability
The purpose of the paper is to discuss and assess the impact of renewable energy, RE, generation on sustainable communities, with a specific focus on employment impact. In recent years, local authorities have been involved in the energy planning process due to the site-specific nature of renewable production and thanks to their nearer connection to citizens. Four small and medium-size sustainable communities belonging to Marche region, in central Italy, have been analysed. The work forecasts the employment generated by the RE capacity defined by two different energy scenarios: 1) the 'business as usual' scenario with a 20% CO2 emission reduction target by 2020, where all the energy policies suggested by Sustainable Energy Action Plans have been considered; 2) the 'potential' scenario with a 50% CO2 emission reduction target by 2050. Results show that the spreading of renewable energy, as expected, can increase local jobs, although the high investments required and problems connected to the impact on the grid have to be considered in the analysis of the global economic effect

Competition-induced stress does not explain deceptive alarm calling in tufted capuchin monkeys
Tactical deception has long attracted interest because it is often assumed to entail complex cognitive mechanisms. However, systematic evidence of tactical deception is rare and no study has attempted to determine whether such behaviours may be underpinned by relatively simple mechanisms. This study examined whether deceptive alarm calling among wild tufted capuchin monkeys, Cebus apella nigritus, feeding on contestable food resources can be potentially explained by a physiological mechanism, namely increased activation in the adrenocortex and the resulting production of glucocorticoids (GCs; ‘stress hormones’). This was tested experimentally in Iguazu? National Park, Argentina, by manipulating the potential for contest competition over food and noninvasively monitoring GC production through analysis of faecal hormone metabolites. If deceptive false alarms are indeed associated with adreno- cortical activity, it was predicted that the patterns of production of these calls would match the patterns of GC output, generally being higher in callers than noncallers in cases in which food is most contestable, and specifically being higher in callers on those occasions when a deceptive false alarm was produced. This hypothesis was not supported, as (1) GC output was significantly lower in association with the experimental introduction of contestable resources than in natural contexts wherein the potential for contest is lower, (2) within experimental contexts, there was a nonsignificant tendency for noncallers to show higher GC output than callers when food was most contestable, and (3) individuals did not show higher GC levels in cases in which they produced deceptive alarms relative to cases in which they did not. A learned association between the production of alarms and increased access to food may be the most likely cognitive explanation for this case of tactical deception, although unexplored physiological mechanisms also remain possible
