Developmental changes in early mother-infant face-to-face communication
Sixteen primiparous mother-infant dyads were videotaped during a naturalistic face-to-face interaction weekly, from age 1 to 14 weeks, in two conditions: infant held vs. not held by mother. Developmental changes of face-to-face communication were observed within individual cases. Results showed a significant increase between week 4 and week 9, depending on the dyad, and a divergence of individual developmental trajectories around 2 months. After this age, one group of dyads showed trajectories that continue to increase, while another group showed trajectories that peak and then begin to decrease. After the first month, the duration of face-to-face communication was significantly longer when the infant was not held rather than held and, in the latter condition, significantly longer for girls. Findings suggest that face-to-face communication context interacts with the infant's age and sex in affecting mother-infant communication

Developmental changes in the relationship between infant’s attention and emotion during early face-to-face communication: A microgenetic study
Developmental changes and real-time dynamics in mother-infant communication: A microgenetic study
This contribution is aimed to show the relevance of microgenetic designs to study change processes in early mother-infant communication. The focus is on how analysing and understanding changes at the micro-level of real-time dynamics of mother-infant co-regulation - intensively observed over a period that crosses a key developmental transition - is fundamental to understanding changes in maternal and infant behaviors during communication at the macro-level of developmental time. Twenty-four mother-infant dyads were videotaped weekly during a naturalistic face-to-face interaction between birth and 3 months, across the 2-month transition indexed by the onset of social smiling. Developmental trajectories of face-to-face communication showed a curvilinear development with a significant increase between weeks 4-10, depending on the dyad. Changes in maternal behaviors paralleled the main developmental changes in infant behaviors. The microanalysis of change processes in the relationship between maternal and infant behaviors in real time revealed a dynamics of mutual influence: e.g., the onset of infant Smile(IS) and Cooing(IC) significantly affected the occurrences of maternal Reflecting(MR) that, on the other hand, encouraged significantly the expression of IS and IC giving rise to sequences of positive feedback that amplified and organized the emotional exchange, and continued to increase through the 3rd month
Interdyad differences in early mother-infant face-to-face communication: Real-time dynamics and developmental pathways
A microgenetic research design with a multiple case study method and a combination of quantitative and qualitative analyses was used to investigate interdyad differences in real-time dynamics and developmental change processes in mother-infant face-to-face communication over the first 3 months of life. Weekly observations of 24 mother-infant dyads using analyses performed dyad-by-dyad showed that most dyads go through 2 qualitatively different developmental phases of early face-to-face communication: After a phase of mutual attentiveness, mutual engagement begins in weeks 7-8 with infant Smiling and Cooing bidirectionally linked with maternal Mirroring. This gives rise to sequences of positive feedback which, by the 3rd month, dynamically stabilizes into innovative play routines. However, when there is a lack of bidirectional positive feedback between infant and maternal behaviors, and a lack of permeability of the early communicative patterns to incorporate innovations, the development of the mutual engagement phase is compromised. The findings contribute both to theories of relationship change processes and to clinical work with at-risk mother-infant interactions
