Fables de M. De Florian
This little (3½" x 5¼") volume reproduces the first edition of Florian from six years earlier in a similar format. It is newly typeset, has fewer pages, and its six illustrations are mirror redoings of the original artwork, now done on stiffer paper. As there, so here are Florian's five books of fables, with 21, 19, 20, 20, and 20 fables in them, respectively. There is again a frontispiece portrait of Florian, still complete with an illustration of the swan pulling the hare across the water on a raft. The first fable of each book is also illustrated here, as there: "La Fable et la Vérité"; "La Mere, l'Enfant et les Sarigues"; "Les Singes et le Léopard"; "Le Savant et le Fermier"; and "Le Berger et le Rossignol." This book was reduced from €85 to €22.80!Language note: FrenchFirst editionFloria
Quelques Fables de Florian
This book is a curiosity. It is made up principally of the 24 cards published and distributed by Phosphatine Falières and printed by Devambez in Paris.. It adds to the cards a leather set of covers, a title-page, a frontispiece of Florian, and -- at the back of the book -- a T of C. It has further a page before the frontispiece to be filled in with the name of the recipient: "Offert a M…par la Maison Chassaing." "Maison Chassaing" sent me on a merry chase on the web. I come away thinking that there are associations here with fine dining and particularly wedding feasts, but that is only an impression. The surprising thing for me is that this "book" is not a homemade album of the complete set but a "professional gift" made up by Falières and given away by a more local entrepreneur. The good news for our collection is that the book brings together into a full set individual items otherwise found in distinct groupings. See these under trade cards at https://www.creighton.edu/aesop/artifacts/cards/tradecards/nonstock/nstradecardseries/phosphatinefalieres/phosphatinefloriancolored/. Compare there the home-made album, for which I paid about five times as much! This is a hardbound book (hard cover)Language note: FrenchFloria
Fables de M. de Florian
This book may represent the first time that I am aware of cataloguing a book virtually identical with another except that this copy has colored illustrations, including an illustration of the frontispiece, "Le Charlatan," on its cover. I presume that the illustrations were colored at the publisher. I seem to have found another colored copy available on French Ebay, but it is quite worn. From what I can tell, the cover illustration there may have been differently colored than the cover illustration here. I have searched in vain to find a firm date for the book, and so I will continue to guess at 1850. The book was one of my first finds during a week in Paris, at Librairie de Sèvres. It has several other minor discrepancies from the non-colored copy. First, the printer on the verso of the first title-page has changed from "Remquet" there to "Bonaventure et Ducessois" here. Secondly, Delarue's address on the second title-page has changed from "3, rue des Grands-Augustins" there to "22, quai des Augustins" here. Finally, on 168, under "Fin de la Table" there is here a second acknowledgement of the printer Bonaventure et Ducessois. The coloring is sometimes a bit garish, especially in overuse of green. The coloring does enhance several of the illustrations, like "Les Deux Voyageurs" (13); "Le Chateau de Cartes" (49); and "Le Paysan et la Rivière" (125). The peacock on 69 is very well portrayed! I will include remarks from that other copy. There are marbled endpapers. There is an AI at the back after 165 pages of fables. I am surprised that the avant-propos finishes on Roman "xx," and the first fable begins on the next page, which begins Arabic numbering and is followed by page "10." There are seven partial-page designs for every book. The engravings are often signed "Coste" or "Jardin." The book measures about 4½" x 7". At the end are the usual copies of "Ruth" and "Tobias."Language note: FrenchNouvelle editionFloria
Fables de M. De Florian
How about that?! I am holding in my hand a first edition of Florian's fables. Before looking into this little (3½ x 5¼) volume, I learned from French Wikipedia that Florian published 112 fables while still alive, but that twelve were published posthumously. I thought that there might have been a number of editions of fables in his lifetime, but there was just one, in 1792, two years before he died. And that first edition is this very one that I am holding! Here are Florian's five books of fables, with 21, 19, 20, 20, and 20 fables in them, respectively. There are five illustrations after a frontispiece portrait of Florian. In an illustration under this oval portrait, is that a swan pulling a hare over the surface of water? The first fable of each book is illustrated here: La Fable et la Vérité; La Mere, l'Enfant et les Sarigues; Les Singes et le Léopard; Le Savant et le Fermier; and Le Berger et le Rossignol. The joy of finding this book has led me to dig deeper into these fables. In I 1, Truth emerges from a well as an old hag, naked, and people flee from her. Fable gives Truth her cloak and recommends that they travel together: the wise will accept truth for her sake, and fools will accept truth because of the attractive cloak. In III 1, monkeys are playing a game like Blind Man's Buff, only what is hit here is an extended arm. Leopard comes by. The lower class monkeys are impressed that the noble leopard would want to play with them. One swipe from the leopard and the blindfolded person, who knows well who hit him, leaves silently. One by one, all the others leave too. It is better not to have the noble play with the commoners, since hid beneath their softest paws are very sharp claws. In V 1, the shepherd enjoys the nightingale's song and asks her to sing again. She says that she is giving it all up, because the frogs are drowning out her song. No, answers the shepherd. When I listen to you, I'm not even conscious of them. IV 1 has this lovely saying under its illustration: je fais souvent du bien pour avoir du plaisir. The farmer has been answering the question where he got his wisdom. He got it from observing nature and taking his part in it. I bet one can hear a bit of Kant's Ode to Duty in this farmer's Enlightenment answer. This is a hardbound book (hard cover)Language note: FrenchFirst editionFloria
Conceptualising inclusive pedagogy:The inclusive pedagogical approach in action
This chapter provides an overview of inclusive pedagogy, also referred to as the inclusive pedagogical approach (Florian & Black-Hawkins, 2011). Conceptually, the approach is predicated on a shift in pedagogical thinking away from conventional approaches that work for most learners existing alongside something additional or different for those (some) who experience difficulties, towards one that involves providing rich learning opportunities that are sufficiently made available for everyone, so that all learners are able to participate in classroom life. By focusing on how achievements in learning are realised through participation in the community of a classroom, the inclusive pedagogical approach acknowledges that there are individual differences between learners but avoids the problems and stigma associated with marking some learners as different. The second part of the chapter explains how the approach can be incorporated into the daily life of classroom activity using the Inclusive-Pedagogical-Approach-in-Action framework that was developed as a tool for assessing and gathering evidence about practice (Florian, 2014; Florian & Spratt, 2013)
