Antigone e le altre. Figure mitiche al femminile nei saggi di Margarete Susman

    No full text
In Margarete Susman’s theoretical and political essays and studies, classical and mythological figures such as Antigone, Pythia, Diotima and Undine become symbols for women’s situation as well as the broader cultural, political and social sphere. The connection between these mythological themes and the intimate, spiritual and intellectual evolution of the author herself signals the originality of her work in women’s studies in general, in women’s literature theory and in mythological studies. This article aims to illustrate the symbolic reading of female mythical figures in Margarete Susman’s writings, also focusing on the connection between mythos and the cultural importance of the maternal function. The icons of the feminine are also objects of Margarete Susman’s writing, addressing questions about the connection of religious attitudes and socio-cultural determined thought

The Diagnosis and Management of Cutaneous Metastases from Melanoma

    No full text
Melanoma is one of the deadliest skin tumors, accounting for almost 90% of skin cancer mortality. Although immune therapy and targeted therapy have dramatically changed the prognosis of metastatic melanoma, many patients experience disease progression despite the currently available new treatments. Skin metastases from melanoma represent a relatively common event as first sign of advanced disease or a sign of recurrence. Skin metastases are usually asymptomatic, although in advanced stages, they can present with ulceration, bleeding, and superinfection; furthermore, they can cause symptoms related to compression on nearby tissues. Treatments vary from simple surgery resections to topical or intralesional local injections, or a combination of these techniques with the most recent systemic immune or target therapies. New research and studies should focus on the pathogenesis and molecular mechanisms of the cutaneous metastases of melanoma in order to shed light on the mechanisms underlying the different behavior and prognoses of different patients

La salita di Cristo alla croce nel Dream of the Rood

The original narrative of Christ’s passion in the Dream of the Rood has received a variety of critical interpretations. Christ’s voluntary and active role in the poem, which contrasts with His passive attitude as attested in the Gospels, together with other details, has been often read from a Germanic heroic perspective that overshadows the very profound Christian nature of the work. The present essay aims to question the pagan reading of the poem and to place the crucifixion scene within a theological framework where Christ’s actions, such as hastening, undressing and climbing onto the cross, can be properly understood. In the continuous tension between heaven and earth that punctuates Christ’s life, the verb gestigan takes on special significance. In this regard, questions arise as to how Christ ascends the cross. Considering the equation ladder-cross in Christian exegesis, the paper discusses the likely influence that the iconographic type of Christ ascending the cross with a ladder, although uncommon, may have had on our author. The presence of this pictorial motif in the illuminations of some Armenian Gospels seems to show that, independently or somehow influenced by earlier models originated in the Christian East that have not come down to us, the poet imagined a realistic scene, yet rich in symbolic meaning, to emphasize Christ’s voluntary sacrifice. The web of images woven throughout the poem provides evidence of the degree of literary and religious knowledge achieved in Anglo-Saxon England

Basal cell carcinomas treated with 0.5% 5-fluorouracil and 10% salicylic acid topical solution

Basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) are the most common nonmelanoma skin cancers. Dermoscopy is an indispensable tool to differentiate superficial BCC from other subtypes and between pigmented and not pigmented ones. Although surgery is considered the gold-standard therapy, new current pharmacological options are available and focus on tumor eradication, increasing cosmetic results and functionality. 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) is a cytostatic drug associated with antimetabolite effects and already approved as monotherapy for superficial BCCs treatment. A recent formulation combining of 5-FU 0.5% with salicylic acid 10% has been indicated for the management of slightly palpable and/or moderately thick hyperkeratotic actinic keratosis of the face, forehead, and balding scalp in immunocompetent adult patients. This formulation has never been used as treatment for superficial BCC. In this article, we reported superficial BCC clinical and dermoscopic outcomes in two patients treated with this new topical agent, to assess its role in treating these lesions and to point out dermoscopy's usefulness in supporting clinical diagnosis and excluding tumor persistence or recurrence

Guida spirituale e interferenze omiletiche nei Precepts dell'Exeter Book

The short poem called Precepts by convention, preserved in the Exeter Book of Old English poetry, has long been almost ignored by critics. The modern title itself points to the poem’s ultimately negative evaluation by most scholars, referring directly to its construction as a numbered list of grouped ethical instructions given by a father to his son, in a word about how to tell good from evil behaviour. Such apparently “uninspired series of admonitions” or “platitudes” (according to Greenfield’s often quoted definition) has received new critical attention in more recent years, particularly within the wider perspective of (and scholarly debate about) wisdom poetry (see especially Hansen 1988, Larrington 1993, and Drout 2006), but also with a focus on the historical-cultural context of the Benedictine Reform in England and on the possible monastic background of its composition (see especially McEntire 1990, Ralby 2010, and again Drout 2006, 2007). All analytical readings of Precepts, up to Stanley’s recent freestanding edition (2018), agree that the poem is a Christian religious poem, rooted in bookish tradition (Neidorf 2021 being the only remarkable exception), but interpretations of single words or passages, and suggested sources or analogues may vary significantly. The purpose of the present article is to offer a number of new analytical cues, in order both to re-read some of the lexical or textual points in a different light, and to suggest that the Old English author made full use of a vast and composite vernacular prose tradition, including Christian regulatory, instructive-educational and homiletic literature. Analysis will corroborate the view that the paternal guide in Precepts is properly a spiritual father in a monastic context, endeavouring to pass over his teachings to his fictitious spiritual son, in a time when the world is believed to be hastening to its end and a true Christian behaviour proves as the only chance to be safe in the life to come

Nails as immune-privileged sites: A case of disabling Acrodermatitis continua of Hallopeau successfully treated with Apremilast

    No full text
Acrodermatitis continua of Hallopeau (ACH) is a chronic, inflammatory, and relapsing disorder characterized by the progressive destruction of fingernails and toenails. This condition is rare, difficult to treat, and often misdiagnosed. Several antipsoriatic treatments have been used, without any therapeutic guideline and no real improvement. Apremilast is an oral phosphodiesterase 4 inhibitor, approved for the treatment of chronic plaque psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. It increases the intracellular concentration of cAMP and restores cytokine equilibrium, especially IL-10, which is particularly involved in nail psoriasis. We reported the case of a 58-year-old man affected by ACH, successfully treated with Apremilast, who achieved a complete healing in just 1 month of treatment without any side effect. We suggest this drug as a successful new treatment for ACH, which can improve clinical manifestations rapidly and has no or few adverse effects. Future formal clinical trials and additional case reports are needed to establish the safety and efficacy of Apremilast in the treatment of ACH
