On the covering dimension of the set of solutions of some nonlinear equations

We prove an abstract theorem whose sole hypothesis is that the degree of a certain map is nonzero and whose parametric equations are studied using cohomological mconclusions imply sharp, multidimensional continuation results. Applications are given to nonlinear partial differential equations

    May Fitzpatrick

May came to the Territory in 1943 with her husband pilot Harry Moss and worked at Connair aircraft at Alice Springs. After the war they bought a couple of trucks and made trips to and from Darwin to buy and sell war disposal goods May first learned to drive but, she soon became proficient and the business thrived. They moved to Darwin in 1946 May was book keeper-cum-social writer for the Northern Standard when political faction-fighting between union members became unbearable May left the job. In 1949 May and Harry they divorced and she was the secretary for the CWA, then Librarian and secretary for the Darwin Worker's Club where she continued to support the principles of union philosophy. May married James (Fitzy) Fitzpatrick and they built at Parap in 1952 where May keen gardener grew everything and helped others with her garden knowledge. May the founder and president of the Darwin Garden Club in 1958. Between 1957 and 1972 May wrote a gardening column for the local newspaper under the name ?Alice-May' and in 1978 she also co-published the popular recipe booklet, The Darwin Gardeners Gourmet Guide which was available in 1988.Union RepresentativeCommunity Servic

Male-female relatedness and patterns of male reproductive investment in guppies

Inbreeding can cause reductions in fitness, driving the evolution of pre- and postcopulatory inbreeding avoidance mechanisms. There is now considerable evidence for such processes in females, but fewstudies have focused on males, particularly in the context of postcopulatory inbreeding avoidance. Here, we address this topic by exposing male guppies (Poecilia reticulata) to either full-sibling or unrelated females and determining whether they adjust investment in courtship and ejaculates. Our results revealed that males reduce their courtship but concomitantly exhibit short-term increases in ejaculate quality when paired with siblings. In conjunction with prior work reporting cryptic female preferences for unrelated sperm, our present findings reveal possible sexually antagonistic counter-adaptations that may offset postcopulatory inbreeding avoidance by females. © 2014 The Author(s)

A local bifurcation theorem for C1-Fredholm maps

    No full text
A local bifurcation theorem is proved under standard transversality assumptions by means of a reduction to finite dimensions. The Krasnosel'skii Bifurcation Theorem is generalized to C 1 - Fredholm maps. Let X and Y be Banach spaces, F: R x X —> Y be C 1 - Fredholm of index 1 and such that F(t, 0) = 0 . If I is a closed, bounded interval at whose endpoints DF(t, 0) is invertible, and the parity of the path is -1 , then I contains a bifurcation point of the equation F(t, x) = 0 . At isolated potential bifurcation points, this sufficient condition for bifurcation is also necessary

Non 3-choosable bipartite graphs and the Fano plane

    No full text
It is known that the smallest complete bipartite graph which is not 3-choosable has 14 vertices. We show that the extremal configuration is unique.PT: J; CR: BROWN E, 2002, MATH MAG, V75, P83 ERDOS P, 1979, CONGRESSUS NUMERANTI, V26, P155 FITZPATRICK SL, DMS854IR U VICT DEP HAUSON D, 1996, ARS COMBINATORIA, V44, P183 VIZING VG, 1976, DISKRET ANAL, V29, P3 WOODALL DR, 2001, LONDON MATH SOC LECT, V288, P269; NR: 6; TC: 0; J9: ARS COMB; PG: 15; GA: 948CQSource type: Electronic(1

Topological degree for nonlinear Fredholm operators

    No full text
We introduce an integer-valued topological degree for proper C2-Fredholm mappings. The changes of the degree under homotopy are described by the parity. We use the degree to prove a global bifurcation theore

Orientability of Fredholm families and topological degree

    No full text
We construct a degree theory for oriented Fredholm mappings of index zero between open subsets of Banach spaces and between Banach manifolds. Our approach is based on the orientation of Fredholm mappings: it does not use Fredholm structures on the domain and target spaces. We provide a computable formula for the change in degree through an admissible homotopy that is necessary for applications to global bifurcation. The notion of orientation enables us to establish rather precise relationships between our degree and many other degree theories for particular classes of Fredholm maps, including the Elworthy-Tromba degree, which have appeared in the literature in a seemingly unrelated manner
