Advisor: Dr. YazidBasthomi, M.A   Keywords: author self-references, authorial voice, corpus study   Establishing strong authorial voice can be achieved through authorial explicit presence in a text. A number of the previous research projects have argued that first person pronoun is the most pivotal way in projecting the author identity. Building upon theerstwhile research findings(see e.g. Hyland, 2001; 2002b), the present corpus based study aims at examining kinds of author self-referencesand how they are employed by EFL learners to establish authorialvoice in thesis writing. The corpus data were taken from 124 undergraduate theses submitted in the past three consecutive years (2013, 2012, and 2011) to the English Department, State University of Malang. I utilized digital corpus software, namely AntConc 3.2.4w, to analyze the corpus comprising of 1.587.059 words in total. This process is an attempt to find out self-references established in thesis writing. Referring to Hyland (2001: 212) who has found 28 expressions of self-mention, there are no less than 18 varieties of author self-referencefound in this study, attesting the notion that the academic writing of EFL students undeniably indicates the enactment of authorial voice. Concerning the next question, the rhetorical choice of EFL students in employing self-references, I made some classifications regarding the distributionofself-references in the selected thesis’ sections—main and parenthetic academic texts—and the writer’s point of views: first person singular pronouns, first person plural pronouns and third person singular pronouns.Since the analysis of the present study used inductive method, the emergence of any issues in further discussion is likely to happen; hence, the present study also can be referred to as qualitative research. Despite the ample studies focused on first person pronouns as author self-representation, this study is distinct in that it discloses some empirics regarding the use of author non-pronoun self-references which stands out as the most prevalent author self-referencesin EFL students’ academic texts. Having said this, I hypothetically believe that the rhetorical choice of author self-references is very much influenced by current issues in academic writing and predominantly by cultural norms (and inculcation) of the EFL students.

    Robot systems are essentially a new species spreading around us, one that we willingly designed and introduced. Neither a natural species nor a mere human artefact. We have limited information about these smart agents. What do they want, what do you need from us, and how can we find a common ground of understanding to enhance each other through collaboration. Lely took a step into exploring these questions.As a dutch-based company with a diverse portfolio of robot solutions, Lely thrives to bring dairy farming to the future. They cover many tasks assisting farmers and cows in barns worldwide. These increasingly capable entities are no longer tools but partners so we must take the next step into carefully designing our coexistence and collaboration with these robotic systems.After extensive literature on Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) and research activities with a variety of stakeholders, I developed a Robot Code of Conduct. This code guides developers into designing robotic systems delivering pleasurable, fitting and cohesive interactions. It provides intermediate-level knowledge on robot behavioural design by carrying the reader through three sets of guidelines differing in abstraction and actionability. This project contributes to the field of HRI while spreading awareness of its relevance in practice. The document contains many influential factors that are applied and tailored to designing automated solutions in dairy farming. This document sets a direction and gives concrete guidelines to steer the development of the portfolio towards a vision where all Lely systems work and communicate desirably. Where they communicate as one. I obtained positive results from assessing the content and direction of this document with developers and farmers, however, further tests would be necessary for a more precise validation of this Robot Code of Conduct. Future research would be essential to transition from bringing awareness to relevant factors, to defining more recommendations and appropriate solutions.Design for Interactio

    Improving the supply performance of forage harvesting machines at Lely

    Lely is a manufacturer of products aimed at the agricultural sector, such as automated milking robots and forage harvesting machines. About 10% of the total revenue (€567 million in 2012) comes from forage harvesting machines, of which the majority is assembled in a factory in Maassluis, where this research has been conducted. Forage harvesting machines are meant for working grasslands. Because grass grows in the spring, peak demand occurs in the spring. Furthermore, short lead times towards the customer (independent worldwide dealers) are necessary because of the short time window which is optimal for working the grass. Assembly is divided over several assembly lines, the assembly lines have a capacity ranging from 5 to 50 machines per week. A relatively large number of parts has a lead time longer than three weeks. Because short lead times are required, machines are assembled based on a forecast. Consequently, Lely assembles to stock based on a forecast, this forecast is updated every month and states the expected number of sales per product group per month (there are 29 products groups and over 100 different machines). Historical data is used to determine the expected sales per machine per month. Based on the forecast, a production plan is made, which states the required number of machines to be assembled per week. Procurement is based on this production plan. Two problems are apparent. First, the on-time delivery (realized production/planned production per week) is considered too low (on average 85%). About 30% of the productions problems can be contributed to shortages: a part is not in the assembly line when it should have been. There are multiple reasons for shortages, but at least 70% of the shortages occurs when the ERP-system indicated parts were available while in practice, they were not. Based on cycle counting, the inventory record accuracy was found to be <50%, which leads to a great risk of shortages. Second, the inventory of parts is considered too high. In 2013, there was on average 11 weeks of inventory even though the average throughput time is three weeks. A reason for the high inventory is frequent changing of the planning, due to an on-time delivery <100% or because the demand is different than was forecasted. The demand may be different because within a product group the actual mix may be different than the forecasted mix, since this is based on historical data. A high inventory also increases the risk of shortages, because a lack of storage space (which can also be seen as a surplus of inventory) leads to a relatively low inventory record accuracy, because multiple SKUs are stored in the same location.     The ‘Lely Discovery’ is an automated mobile barn cleaner, which routes are programmed by a ‘teaching method’. The routes are specified by a linear action sequence to be executed by the robot. Teaching a route to the Lely Discovery requires users to execute every action first by walking the robot through the barn. The route teaching method is time consuming and the current interface of the teaching method is not user-friendly. When a route requires changes for optimizing the route, the user has to re-execute all the route actions on the robot to and from the position where he wants to change the route. This thesis explores the implementation of a route drawing system which enables users to draw routes on a map. This system can generate an action sequence from the drawn routes on the map. Users can program routes 2 – 3 times faster than with the teaching method and route changes can be made in short notice. In this thesis the results of a user study are presented and the results of the tested routes on the robot via a first prototype of the drawing system.
