Transcript (80 pages) of an interview by Connie Siegel and Hynda Rudd with Herman Finkelstein on May 1 and 8, 1973. From tapes H-23 and H-24 in the Jewish Oral History ProjectMr. Finkelstein (b. 1878) relates how his family emigrated from Poland, describes his work in the furniture business, and discusses family religious traditions, the Auerbach family, congregation Montefiore, anti-Semitism, Jewish-Mormon relations, Jewish social life, and political figures in Utah
Interview with Stanley Finkelstein
Stanley Finkelstein received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering (1962), M.S. in Electrical Engineering (1964), and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Systems Science, and Bioengineering (1969) from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn in Brooklyn, New York. From 1968 to 1977, Dr. Finkelstein served as an assistant and then associate professor of Bioengineering, Operations Research and Systems Analysis at the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn. In 1977, Dr. Finkelstein moved to the University of Minnesota, where he joined the faculty of the Division of Health Computer Sciences in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology. Since 1977, Dr. Finkelstein has been a member of the graduate faculty in Health Informatics and in Biomedical Engineering, and since 1983 in Biophysical Sciences and Medical Physics. From 1986 to 1997, Dr. Finkelstein served as director of graduate studies in health informatics; from 1996 to 2000, as director of graduate studies in biomedical engineering; and from 2000 to 2001, as interim director of the Division of Health Informatics.Stanley Finkelstein begins by discussing his educational background and his arrival at the University of Minnesota. He describes at length his research in the field of home monitoring and telehealth, including his research with Jay N. Cohn on the development of a device to measure and monitor arteriovascular compliance in order to diagnose and monitor hypertension and congestive heart failure; his research with Warren Warwick and the development of the first home monitoring system for cystic fibrosis patients; and the subsequent development of home monitoring of lung transplant patients in collaboration with Marshall Hertz. Dr. Finkelstein goes on to discuss the NLM training grant program; the lack of institutional support provided to the Division of Health Computer Sciences; the development of the Institute for Health Informatics; the leadership of Eugene Ackerman and Laël Gatewood; the number of women in the field of biomedical engineering and health informatics; the relationship between the Division of Health Computer Sciences and the Biomedical Library; the collaborative relationship between the University of Minnesota and the Mayo Clinic; and the development of the Masters in Health Informatics.Finkelstein, Stanley; Tobbell, Dominique. The Colors Of Galaxies At 4 < Z < 8 And Their Contribution To Reionization
We present recent results on the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) colors of galaxies at high-redshift, and the contribution of these galaxies to the reionization of the intergalactic medium (IGM). Using a combination of deep and wide data from the CANDELS, HUDF09 and ERS programs, we find that galaxies at z = 7 appear to be dust free, and they become substantially dustier by z = 4. Faint galaxies at z = 7 appear very blue, but they are consistent with the colors of very blue local galaxies, thus there is no evidence for the presence of exotic stellar populations. We find that the observable galaxy population can sustain a fully ionized IGM at z = 6 if the escape fraction of ionizing photons (f(esc)) is 30%. If the luminosity function extends much fainter, then the required f(esc) is lowered to similar to 10%. Examining the constraint on the emission rate of ionizing photons from Ly alpha forest measurements, we find that if the luminosity function extends to M-UV = -13, f(esc) must be less than 13% at z = 6. This escape fraction can still sustain a reionized IGM at z = 6, and even at z = 7, but unless it rises substantially at z > 6, the IGM may be similar to 20 - 50% neutral by z = 8.Astronom
Anton Finkelstein Collection 1923-1965 Bulk dates: 1943-1956
The Anton Finkelstein Collection documents some of the written work of Anton Finkelstein in philosophy, politics and literature. It contains unpublished manuscripts on assorted topics within these fields as well as his discussions via correspondence with Hanns Fischer. A few letters by others and typescripts by Fischer are also included.Anton Finkelstein, a lawyer in Leipzig, was interred in a Nazi concentration camp, which he escaped with the help of an SS man, whom he had known from their political activities with the SPD in Berlin. This former comrade smuggled Finkelstein to Portugal or Spain, from where he escaped to La Paz, Bolivia. There he earned his living as a violin player, teacher and member of the local orchestra. He was active with "Das andere Deutschland" and eventually received a decoration from the ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in La Paz. He also wrote articles for the publication Das andere Deutschland/ La otra Alemania and lectured for groups such as the Deutsch-Republikanischer Verein. In March 1958 he decided to move to São Paulo, Brazil, to be closer to his son Gerhart (Gerald).Anton Finkelstein's daughter and son Gerhart (later Gerald) E. Finkelstein, together with their mother, left Germany for Santos, Brazil on board the "Cap Ancona" in October 1938.Processeddigitize
