This specimen was figured by Lamarck in (1816). One specimen MHNG INVE 51716 (ex MHNG 1098/18), 101 mm. Locality on both labels: Mers du Nord. Remarks: According to Rosalie de Lamarck, two specimens were originally in her father’s collection. The size of 4 pouces 2 lignes (= 11 cm) matches the size of specimen 1098/17; Kiener’s figure does not match this specimen. Current taxonomic position: Neptunea despecta (Linnaeus, 1758); placed in Neptunea [Buccinidae] by Sars (1878): 267. Locality is northern seas. Material in MHNG, Lamarck collection: no material. Rosalie de Lamarck’s marginal notations indicate that there were originally 2 specimens in her father’s collection. These 2 syntypes have not been found and the only specimen in the Delessert collection does not match the size given by Lamarck (11 pouces 4 lignes = about 307 mm). The Delessert specimen measures 365 mm. Remarks: the original spelling was emended to colosseus by W. Wood (1818): 125, pl. 26, fig. 72.
