Introduction: timescapes of extraction
No full textThis book aims to contribute to this growing literature by putting together mining and post-mining in a global perspective; that is, by approaching the spatial and temporal articulations of mining and post-mining as interrelated and coexisting features of the same global minescape. The main point we want to make is that placing mining and post-mining in a global perspective helps us account for the interconnections between the diverse and diversified worlds of resource extraction and their lasting effects over time, and to think about their legacies as intimately connected to the contemporary extractive geographies. To do this, we propose framing mining and post-mining sites through the idea of the ‘global life of mines’, which we conceive as a methodological framework for addressing the variations and permanence of resource extraction and its aftermath. Taken together, the chapters in this book offer insights into the multiple temporalities entangled in the timescapes of resource extraction (D’Angelo and Pijpers 2018a, 2018b) and how such temporalities, far from being captured by conventional linear chronologies (of clocks, calendars, calculations, estimates), coexist and interact in producing the global minescape. Thinking about mining and post-mining in terms of their ‘global life’ means to combine the spatialities of dispersed sites of (post)extraction with a timescape perspective that highlights the temporal intricacy and multifaceted temporal dimensions of socio-environmental life (Adam 1998). Consequently, the ‘global life of mines’ entails understanding extractive spaces through time and the temporalities of extraction through space.
This book brings into conversation researchers who address different dimensions, implications and temporalities of resource extraction and its aftermath. In this Introduction, we highlight a ‘global’ outlook as a productive way of thinking about extractive activities and their afterlives. We clarify the meaning of the global, what is global in the life of mines, and how we believe it is crucial to bring together mining and post-mining in a comparative perspective. We think of the global life of mines as a comprehensive framework for thinking about circuits of extraction, mining sites and their exhausted landscapes as intimately interconnected

No full textA partire da una ricerca etnografica pluriennale sulle memorie minerarie, il capitolo esplora le trasformazioni sociali ed economiche seguite alla dismissione delle miniere nel Sulcis-Iglesiente (Sardegna, Italia) e i processi di patrimonializzazione connessi.
Dopo la chiusura delle miniere metallifere, si sono attivati due principali approcci di risposta: la ricerca di nuove soluzioni produttive di tipo industriale e la valorizzazione turistica del patrimonio minerario. Tuttavia, queste strategie sembrano non essere riuscite a compensare le perdite occupazionali e hanno lasciato l'area in una situazione di crisi economica persistente.
Attraverso interviste con ex minatori, il capitolo riflette sulle memorie e sul corpo dei lavoratori, esponendo come nelle loro narrazioni i processi di patrimonializzazione sembrano aver trascurato il valore umano e sociale della miniera, che non è solo un luogo di produzione ma anche un contesto di relazioni sociali, solidarietà e lotta. Molti minatori esprimono una resistenza emotiva nei confronti della musealizzazione sterile delle miniere, affermando che senza il corpo dei lavoratori, la miniera perde il suo significato e diventa un luogo "morto".Based on years of ethnographic research on mining memories in Sulcis-Iglesiente (Sardinia, Italy), the chapter explores the social and economic changes that occurred after the shutdown of the mines, and the heritage-making processes associated with it.
Following the closure of metalliferous mines, two main approaches were activated in response: the search for new industrial production solutions and the tourist-oriented valorization of the mining heritage. However, these strategies seem to have failed to compensate for the employment losses and have left the area in a state of persistent economic crisis.
Through interviews with former miners, the chapter reflects on the memories and physical experiences of the workers, showing how, in their narratives, the heritage-making processes appear to have overlooked the human and social value of the mine, which is not only a place of production but also a context for social relationships, solidarity, and struggle. Many miners express emotional resistance toward the musealization of the mines, stating that without the presence of workers' bodies, the mine loses its meaning and becomes a "dead" place
