On the history of the study of F. Sologub’s work: a report by F.A. Vasiliev-Ushkuinik at the State Academy of Art Sciences (1929)
The article represents a partial reconstruction of one of the first historical and literary studies of Fedor Sologub’s novel The Petty Demon. Its author, F.A. Vasiliev-Ushkuynik, conducted it in the late 1920s and early 1930s and relied on the archival materials that were already in the Pushkin House at that time, as well as on the information collected during his research among the writer’s coworkers during his life in the town Velikie Luki. These materials formed the basis of the article, which for a long time was under consideration in the editorial office of the almanac “Zven’ia.” V.D. Bonch-Bruevich, who headed the project, informed Vasiliev that the editorial board was considering the possibility of placing his work in the next issue of the almanac. However, the author did not wait for a definite answer and decided to take his manuscript. The original text has not been found, but we can reconstruct the content of the work from materials preserved in the fund of the State Academy of Art Sciences (Russian State Archive of Literature and Art), particularly the report “F. Sologub in the work on The Petty Demon,” read at a meeting of the subsection of Russian literature in 1929 by Vasiliev. Vasiliev’s letters to V.I. Annensky-Krivich and N.K. Gudzij, along with his correspondence with Bonch-Bruevich (RGALI, Russian State Library), allow us to reconstruct the history of the work and its main points. The appendix contains the theses of the report and the minutes of the meeting of the State Academy of Art Sciences with the discussion of the presentation of Vasiliev
Singular perturbations of Volterra equations with periodic nonlinearities: Stability and oscillatory properties
Singularly perturbed integro-differential Volterra equations with MIMO periodic nonlinearities are considered, which describe synchronization circuits (such as phase- and frequency-locked loops) and many other “pendulum-like” systems. Similar to the usual pendulum equation, such systems are typically featured by infinite sequences of equilibria points, and none of which can be globally asymptotically stable. A natural extension of the global asymptotic stability is the gradient-like behavior, that is, convergence of any solution to one of the equilibria. In this paper, we offer an efficient frequency-domain criterion for gradientlike behavior. This criterion is not only applicable to a broad class of infinite-dimensional systems with periodic nonlinearities, but in fact ensures the equilibria set stability under singular perturbation. In particular, the proposed criterion guarantees the absence of periodic solutions that are considered to be undesirable in synchronization systems. In this paper we also discuss a relaxed version of this criterion, which guarantees the absence of “high-frequency” periodic solutions, whose frequencies lie beyond a certain bounded interval.Accepted Author ManuscriptTeam Tamas Keviczk
Dichotomy and stability of disturbed systems with periodic nonlinearities
Systems that can be decomposed as feedback interconnections of stable linear blocks and periodic nonlinearities arise in many physical and engineering applications. The relevant models e.g. describe oscillations of a viscously damped pendulum, synchronization circuits (phase, frequency and delay locked loops) and networks of coupled power generators. A system with periodic nonlinearities usually has multiple equilibria (some of them being locally unstable). Many tools of classical stability and control theories fail to cope with such systems. One of the efficient methods, elaborated to deal with periodic nonlinearities, stems from the celebrated Popov method of 'integral indices', or integral quadratic constraints; this method leads, in particular, to frequency-domain criteria of the solutions' convergence, or, equivalently, global stability of the equilibria set. In this paper, we further develop Popov's method, addressing the problem of robustness of the convergence property against external disturbances that do not oscillate at infinity (allowing the system to have equilibria points). Will the forced solutions also converge to one of the equilibria points of the disturbed system? In this paper, a criterion for this type of robustness is offered.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Team Tamas Keviczk
Editing in a horror film
The aim of this bachelor thesis is to provide a comprehensive overview of the use of editing in horror films. In order to achieve this goal, the author analyses the methods and techniques of editing in horror films and their use in particular audiovisual works. The author also discusses her own editing of a short student horror film. The theoretical part of this thesis includes definitions, history and evolution of the horror genre, as well as a description of the sub-genres of horror films. Then the theoretical part describes the roles, types and techniques of editing in the creation of an audiovisual work. The practical part analyses editing in popular horror films and examines when and why a particular editing technique is used and how the viewer experiences a scene depending on the particular editing technique. Then it presents the process of creating the editing of a short horror film. In conclusion, the author analyses the relevance of the chosen editing techniques to the director's vision and the strengthening of his idea through an in-depth interview with the director of the film.Cílem této bakalářské práce je poskytnout komplexní přehled o využití střihu v hororových filmech. ABSTRACT
Bachelor work “Mystical Landscape in the Novels by V. Bryusov Fiery Angel and A. Skaldin The Wandering and Adventures of Nikodim The Elder” is devoted to study of mystical space in the works and V.Brusov A.Skaldina.
Based on the method of typological analysis, the author identifies the basic details of mystical landscape’s chronotope. Particular attention is paid to the problem of space in the symbolist novel.
The work is divided into two parts. The first part outlines the main theoretical issues necessary to conduct the study, the second - the analysis of landscapes in the works of these authors.
The research may be interesting for philologists, which are involved in similar question research, as well for all other who is interested in this problem
Suns of the Mbira: A Critical Exploration of the Multiple Figurations of Femininity in Selected Fiction by Tsitsi Dangarembga and Yvonne Vera
My thesis is that multiple figurations of femininity challenging traditional
Zimbabwean values are articulated in the representations of womanhood,
motherhood and sexuality in the writing of Tsitsi Dangarembga (1959-)
and Yvonne Vera (1964-2005). Critically, I draw centrally upon Rosi
Braidotti (1994) and Donna Haraway’s (1992; 2004) work on figurations
as feminist metaphors theorizing how women challenge and transform
socially constructed roles that confine females to subservient social
positions. In addition, Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari’s (1987)
theorization of multiplicity is deployed as a useful conceptualization of
the erasure of the binary separating the collective and individual, asserting
instead, that subjectivities are pluralistic, connected identities in constant
creation.
Applying the critics’ ideas with due caution to the African context,
through a method of ‘carnivalizing,’ mixing and negotiating theory, my
thesis also makes use of selected forms of African feminist theory, to give
the necessary cultural context to Zimbabwean femininity. I critically
engage with scholarly work that theorizes African women’s
historiography and negotiations of power and knowledge. Combining
these diverse feminist and post-structuralist voices together with views
expressed in the writing, I aim to produce a nuanced reading of the
plurality of femininity so that a pattern of simultaneously complimentary
and contradictory relations with feminist paradigms of African
womanhood begins to emerge as key to interpreting the selected fiction.
My thesis develops in three chapters, beginning with an examination of
how rebellious women negotiate the domestic, private world culturally
assigned to females. I explore how Vera’s unconventional figurations of
motherhood undo the cultural and political mores placed on women by
essentialist patriarchal and racial ideologies. Further analyzing dissenting
femininities, I investigate subversive textual constructions of same-sex
relationships in Vera and Dangarembga’s fiction. My readings suggest
that some of the ideological contradictions between theory and text
provide fertile conditions in which to rethink radical femininities as
figurations within African feminism. I propose new, progressive strategies
for reading womanhood, and exploring the polyphonic and complex
nature of colonial and post-independence Zimbabwean femininity, as
expressed in the novels

The human myeloproliferative disorders: molecular pathogenesis and clonal heterogeneity
The classical myeloproliferative disorders (MPD), comprising essential thrombocythaemia (ET), polycythaemia vera (PV) and idiopathic myelofibrosis (IMF), are clonal premalignant haematopoietic neoplasms associated with activating mutations in signalling pathway molecules and a variable tendency to develop acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). This thesis examined genotype-phenotype associations of JAK2 and MPL mutations, the presence of clonal diversity in the MPD and the genetic events associated with progressive disease.
Mutations in MPL were identified in 4% of ET and 7% of IMF but not in PV. Three different acquired MPL mutations were identified, one of which had been reported as an inherited allele. Although MPL mutations did not delineate a distinct clinical or histopathological subtype of ET, molecular testing provides an important new tool in the diagnostic armamentarium. Clones homozygous for the JAK2 V617F mutation were identified in female but not male patients with ET, suggesting that gender differences may be important in the determination of disease phenotype. In patients with two acquired genetic alterations, a signalling pathway mutation and a cytogenetic abnormality were usually present within the same clone. By contrast, coexistence of two signalling pathway mutations indicated the presence of biclonal disease that in two patients had arisen independently and not from a shared founder clone.
RAS mutations were identified as potential cooperating events in patients with JAK2 or MPL mutant IMF. In patients developing AML following a JAK2 V617F-positive MPD, those with V617F-positive leukaemia had progressed via an accelerated phase of disease and harboured acquired alterations of RUNX1 or EVI1. V617F-negative leukaemias tended to follow directly from ET or PV, and loss of the JAK2 mutation by reversion to wild-type due to mitotic recombination, gene deletion or gene conversion was excluded. The thesis concludes with a discussion of how clonal heterogeneity can be integrated into current models of MPD disease pathogenesis

Two stars on chemistry horizon (of V. E. Bogdanovskaya and V. N. Ipatiev 150th anniversary)
Until the first quarter of 20th century women could not obtain higher education in Russia. Lev
Gumilev commented that only most passionate of them could do it. Their quantity was not even
dozens; only few names are known. Nevertheless, some chemists we can reveal among them,
namely Maria Bakulina, Margaret von Wrangel, Vera Balandina, Vera Bogdanovskaya, Anna
Volkova, Vera Glebova, Julia Lermontova, and Lina Shtern. This paper is devoted to one of
them, namely Vera Evstafevna Bogdanovskaya-Popova. She was not only experimental chemist, but also the author of one of the first original Russian school textbooks in chemistry. In the history
of chemistry in our country we can find another amazing person who has not received special
chemical education, i. e., did not obtain the University degree in this specialty. Nevertheless, his
works in organic chemistry were so brilliant that he has received international recognition, as well
as it was confirmed by his Academician degree. His name is Vladimir Nikolayevich Ipatiev. Both
of these scientists will celebrate soon (the year 2017) the 150th anniversaries of their birthdays.
