Nordic walking as an exercise intervention to reduce pain in women With aromatase inhibitor–associated arthralgia: a feasibility study
No full textContextWomen taking aromatase inhibitors as treatment for breast cancer commonly experience joint pain and stiffness (aromatase inhibitor–associated arthralgia [AIAA]), which can cause problems with adherence. There is evidence that exercise might be helpful, and Nordic walking could reduce joint pain compared to normal walking.ObjectivesTo determine the feasibility of a trial of Nordic walking as an exercise intervention for women with AIAA.MethodsA feasibility study was carried out in a sample of women with AIAA using a randomized control design. Women were randomized to exercise (six-week supervised group Nordic walking training once per week with an increasing independent element, followed by six weeks 4 × 30 minutes/week independent Nordic walking); or enhanced usual care. Data were collected on recruitment, retention, exercise adherence, safety, and acceptability. The Brief Pain Inventory, GP Physical Activity Questionnaire, and biopsychosocial measures were completed at baseline, six and 12 weeks.ResultsForty of 159 eligible women were recruited and attrition was 10%. There was no increased lymphedema and no long-term or serious injury. Adherence was >90% for weekly supervised group Nordic walking, and during independent Nordic walking, >80% women managed one to two Nordic walking sessions per week. From baseline to study end point, overall activity levels increased and pain reduced in both the intervention and control groups.ConclusionOur findings indicate that women with AIAA are prepared to take up Nordic walking, complete a six-week supervised course and maintain increased activity levels over a 12-week period with no adverse effects

No full textThis year’s annual Nulungu lecture at the University of Notre Dame Australia’s Broome Campus will be delivered by Deborah Cheetham, Indigenous Soprano, actor and author of the internationally acclaimed play, White Baptist Abba Fan. She is a graduate of the NSW Conservatorium of Music and Julliard School of Music.
Since her international debut in 1997 Ms Cheetham has performed in the theatres and concert halls of United States, Europe, the United Kingdom, New Zealand and throughout Australia. At the Sydney Olympics in 2000, Ms Cheetham performed her original composition, Dali Mana Gamarada.
During the 2001 Centenary of Federation celebrations Ms Cheetham performed in several major events including the January 1st Concert in Sydney’s Centennial Park when she appeared as a soloist and speaker. She performed with Argentine tenor, Jose Cura at the opening ceremony of the Rugby World Cup in 2003. This was broadcast to a worldwide audience of more than one billion. In 2005, Deborah added to her list of international credit engagements in Paris, including performances at the Australian Embassy and the La Cigale in the Marais
In 2006 Deborah was a recipient of the Australia Council, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Arts fellowship. The fellowship enabled Deborah to write, direct and produce a 21st century Australian opera, Pecan Summer. The work created opportunities and demonstrated the talents of Indigenous singers and musicians, actors, writers and technicians.
On 22nd February this year Deborah performed the national anthem at the memorial service for the victims of the Black Saturday bushfires. Of the service Deborah said , ‘Joined by a massed choir of over 500 voices I was honoured to pay my respect to the victims and survivors of these terrible fires by singing Advance Australia Fair.’
Deborah will be delivering the Nulungu Lecture at the Broome Campus of The University of Notre Dame, 88 Guy Street, Broome, on Thursday 20 August at 5.00pm. The Nulungu Reconciliation Lecture is to be an annual event on the Broome Campus where key speakers will be invited to address issues of Reconciliation that shape contemporary Aboriginal and Australian thought and experience. Learning theories and interprofessional education: a user's guide
No full textThere is increasing interest in the theoretical underpinning of interprofessional education (IPE) and writers in this field are drawing on a wide range of disciplines for theories that have utility in IPE. While this has undoubtedly enriched the research literature, for the educational practitioner, whose aim is to develop and deliver an IPE curriculum that has sound theoretical underpinnings, this plethora of theories has become a confusing, and un-navigable quagmire. This article aims to provide a compass for those educational practitioners by presenting a framework that summarizes key learning theories used in IPE and the relationship between them. The study reviews key contemporary learning theories from the wider field of education used in IPE and the explicit applications of these theories in the IPE literature to either curriculum design or programme evaluation. Through presenting a broad overview and summary framework, the study clarifies the way in which learning theories can aid IPE curriculum development and evaluation. It also highlights areas where future theoretical development in the IPE field is required

No full textThis article describes The Communication Initiative (The CI), a network of those using communication to foster economic and social change in communities around the world. Network members access information and collaborate with each other through any of three knowledge websites-one with a worldwide overview and focus, one with a focus on Latin America, and one with a focus on Africa-and their associated electronic newsletters. These online spaces are components in a broader process that the author terms 'horizontal communication', which is central to providing a non-judgmental, level platform for accessing the information and interactions that are important to those actually practising communication for development. Architecture and the Time of Space: The Double Progression of Body and Brain
No full textIn this work Deborah Hauptmann deals with the relationships between mind, body, architecture and the city. Major authors ranging from Henri Bergson and Walter Benjamin to Henri Lefebvre and Gilles Deleuze are discussed in order to open up thinking on the roles of perception and the cognitive sciences in today’s society. Various themes are explored. Matter and mind are considered as kinds of multiplicities that affect our distinctions between subject and object. A theoretical framework is carefully constructed and argued in detail, allowing us to grapple with the existing problems of a rapidly changing field of disciplinary actions. The author looks at how vitalism has been applied to space, offers a view of the city through the question of who is allowed to claim right to the city and addresses the idea of the virtual and emergent. She examines the problem of experience by posing questions pertaining to both voluntary and involuntary memory. She concludes by making concepts surrounding biopolitics and noopolitics explicit and investigates their past discourses, demonstrating that they are still pertinent to both the field of architecture and philosophy.
