    Andrew Field (1938- ) is a scholar, translator, and author, who has published translations of Russian literature, critical studies, biographies, fiction, essays, and travel articles. He holds degrees from Columbia University as well as a Ph.D. from the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia. From 1977 to 1979, he was a professor at Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia. Dr. Field's papers consist of materials relating to the writing of his 1983 study of the life and work of Djuna Barnes, Djuna: the Formidable Miss Barnes (alternately entitled Djuna: The Life and Times of Djuna Barnes). Included in the collection are correspondence, manuscripts, research notes, clippings related to the book's publication and reception, and photographs. Also included is a handwritten manuscript of a poem by Barnes

    Collaboration and contestation in further and higher education partnerships in England: a Bourdieusian field analysis

    Internationally, ‘College for All’ policies are creating new forms of vocational higher education (HE), and shifting relationships between HE and further education (FE) institutions. In this paper, we consider the way in which this is being implemented in England, drawing on a detailed qualitative case study of a regional HE–FE partnership to widen participation. We focus on the complex mix of collaboration and contestation that arose within it, and how these affected socially differentiated groups of students following high- and low-status routes through its provision. We outline Bourdieu’s concept of ‘field’ as a framework for our analysis and interpretation, including its theoretical ambiguities regarding the definition and scale of fields. Through hermeneutic dialogue between data and theory, we tentatively suggest that such partnerships represent bridges between HE and FE. These bridges are strong between higher-status institutions, but highly contested between lower-status institutions competing closely for distinction. We conclude that the trajectories and outcomes for socially disadvantaged students require attention and collective action to address the inequalities they face, and that our theoretical approach may have wider international relevance beyond the English case

    Detrital zircon and apatite (U‐Th)/He geochronology of intercalated baked sediments: a new approach to dating young basalt flows

    Simple numerical models suggest that many basaltic lava flows should sufficiently heat the sediments beneath them to reset (U‐Th)/He systematics in detrital zircon and apatite. This result suggests a useful way to date such flows when more conventional geochronological approaches are either impractical or yield specious results. We present here a test of this method on sediments interstratified with basalt flows of the Taos Plateau Volcanic Field of New Mexico. Nineteen zircons and apatites from two samples of baked sand collected from the uppermost 2 cm of a fluvial channel beneath a flow of the Upper Member of the Servilleta Basalt yielded an apparent age of 3.487 ± 0.047 Ma (2 SE confidence level), within the range of all published 40Ar/39Ar dates for other flows in the Upper Member (2.81–3.72 Ma) and statistically indistinguishable from the 40Ar/39Ar dates for basal flows of the Upper Member with which the studied flow is broadly correlative (3.61 ± 0.13 Ma). Given the high yield of 4He from U and Th decay, this technique may be especially useful for dating Pleistocene basalt flows. Detailed studies of the variation of (U‐Th)/He detrital mineral dates in sedimentary substrates, combined with thermal modeling, may be a valuable tool for physical volcanologists who wish to explore the temporal and spatial evolution of individual flows and lava fields.</p

    Confounded by the Field: Bidding in Food Auctions When Field Prices Are Increasing

    Auction experiments are commonly used to determine consumers’ willingness to pay for various food items. While their non-hypothetical nature is a positive, market substitutes create a probable confounding of bids by field prices. This study examines the influence of field prices on bids for four foods in two versions by conducting auctions before and after large price increases in 2007. Results show that bids were capped at given field prices and were significantly higher in sessions conducted after store prices increased. Percentage premiums, however, were not significantly different across sessions, suggesting that effects of field prices could be reduced.     [1] Two independent ground-based experiments and two satellite-borne experiments are used to interpret the changes in plasmaspheric composition at the same point in space during moderate geomagnetic activity on 22 January and 14 February 2001. Mass density at L = 2.5 was determined from an array of magnetometers on the Antarctic Peninsula, while the electron number density along the same flux tube was determined from analysis of the group delay of man-made VLF transmissions from north-east America. The IMAGE satellite RPI experiment provided in situ measurements of the electron number density in passing the equatorial region of the same field line, while the EUV Imager experiment was able to resolve the He+ abundance by looking back toward the same place a few hours later. On 22 January 2001 all measurements were consistent with a moderately disturbed plasmasphere. On 14 February 2001 there appeared to be a significant response of the plasmasphere to the moderate (Kp = 5) activity levels. Both the electron number density and the mass density determined from the ground-based experiments were markedly higher than on 22 January 2001. Also, the IMAGE RPI gave a markedly lower electron number density than did the ground-based data; this is explained by differences in the longitude at which the measurements were made and the presence of localized plasmaspheric structures. At Antarctic Peninsula longitudes a He+ column abundance value of 6 × 1010 cm-2 is found to be equivalent to plasmaspheric electron density levels of 3000 cm-3 at L = 2.5. For these conditions the He+ mass abundance was about 12–16% compared with H+. Both decreases and increases in the He+ column abundance measured by the EUV Imager appear to be linearly correlated to changes in the percentage occurrence of He+ as determined from a combination of ground-based VLF and ULF observations

    He+ dominance in the plasmasphere during geomagnetically disturbed periods: 1. Observational results

    Observations made by the DMSP 1710 satellite during the recovery phase from geomagnetic disturbances in June 1991 show regions of He+ dominance around 830 km altitude at 09:00 MLT. These regions are co-located with a trough in ionisation observed around 55degrees in the winter hemisphere. Plasma temperature and concentration observations made during the severe geomagnetic storm of 24 March 1991 are used as a case study to determine the effects of geomagnetic disturbances along the orbit of the F10 satellite. Previous explanations for He+ dominance in this trough region relate to the part of the respective flux tubes that is in darkness. Such conditions are not relevant for this study, since the whole of the respective flux tubes are sunlit. A new mechanism is proposed to explain the He+ dominance in the trough region. This mechanism is based on plasma transport and chemical reaction effects in the F-region and topside ionosphere, and on the time scales for such chemical reactions. Flux tubes previously depleted by geomagnetic storm effects refill during the recovery phase from the ionosphere as a result of pressure differences along the flux tubes. Following a geomagnetic disturbance, the He+ ion recovers quickly via the rapid photoionisation of neutral helium, in the F-region and the topside. The recovery of the O+ and H+ ions is less rapid. This is proposed as a result of the respective charge exchange reactions with neutral atomic hydrogen and oxygen. Preliminary model calculations support the proposed mechanism
