    No full text
The central theme of the analysis presented here is the relationship between cultural and linguistic memory in the work of two writers, Hélène Cixous and Leïla Sebbar, who experienced uprooting following the Algerian war. They share the use of words and photographs to recount their geographical and linguistic exile and their lost homeland. For both of them, this autobiographical exploration, which is declined in a series of iconotexts investigating the history of their respective families, is connoted by a nostalgia of the native land and lost languages like the language of the father, Arabic, never learned but always present. The absence of other languages lost, not transmitted, hide behind French and feed their writing in a need never satisfied to reconnect with the paternal origin

Stories from the Lapidarium: legio IIII Flavia Felix in Dalmatia

The author discusses the fragment of a single-section funerary stele kept in the Lapidarium of the Archaeological Museum Zadar. Although it does not contain any special features – even its inscription is not fully preserved – a detail of the inscription reveals an interesting fact that can be seen as solid evidence that legio IIII Flavia Felix was actually a reconstituted legio IIII Macedonica that had occupied the vacated encampment on the River Krka. The known facts about the founding of IIII Flavia Felix Legion and its deployment in Dalmatia are also discussed. An overview of the inscriptions containing the legion’s members from Dalmatian soil is also provided

Thyroid function in childhood obesity and metabolic comorbidity

Childhood obesity is a worldwide health problem and its prevalence is increasing steadily and dramatically all over the world. Obese subjects have a much greater likelihood than normal-weight children of acquiring dyslipidemia, elevated blood pressure, and impaired glucose metabolism, which significantly increase their risk of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Elevated TSH concentrations in association with normal or slightly elevated free T4 and/or free T3 levels have been consistently found in obese subjects, but the mechanisms underlying these thyroid hormonal changes are still unclear. Whether higher TSH in childhood obesity is adaptive, increasing metabolic rate in an attempt to reduce further weight gain, or indicates subclinical hypothyroidism or resistance and thereby contributes to lipid and/or glucose dysmetabolism, remains controversial. This review highlights current evidence on thyroid involvement in obese children and discusses the current controversy regarding the relationship between thyroid hormonal derangements and obesity-related metabolic changes (hypertension, dyslipidemia, hyperglycemia and insulin resistance, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease) in such population. Moreover, the possible mechanisms linking thyroid dysfunction and pediatric obesity are reviewed. Finally, the potential role of lifestyle intervention as well as of therapy with thyroid hormone in the treatment of thyroid abnormalities in childhood obesity is discussed. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. This article, created by Flavia R. Jolliffee of Brunel University, describes a sampling experiments based on opinion-poll type data as an alternative to coin-tossing experiments for social science students. Jolliffe includes interesting data sets within this basic lesson plan. It seems that the author is attempting to provide a more riveting experience for students, at least in comparison to a coin-tossing example.
