«Sortes biblicae» e tradizioni agiografiche fra IV e VI secolo
No full textThe use of the divinatory practice of the «sortes biblicae», direct heir of the ancient rhapsodomancy («sortes Homericae, sortes Vergilianae»), is frequently documented in the hagiographical sources between the fourth and the sixth centuries. The most famous episode of bibliomancy is transmitted by the eighth book of Augustine’s «Confessiones» («tolle, lege»). As narrated by his biographer Sulpicius Severus, also the episcopal election of Martin of Tours was decided by opening at random the book of Psalms. This hagiographical evidence remains, indeed, very problematic. Therefore, the early Church’s condemnation of the «sortes sanctorum» – commonly, but incorrectly, understood as a synonym for the divinatory consultation of the Bible – needs to be better explained

No full textOggetto della ricerca sono le tipologie bibliche sottostanti ad alcuni dei miracoli che dimostrano il dominio dei santi sugli elementi della natura e, precisamente, sul mare e sulle acque in genere, presenti nella letteratura agiografica latina tra IV e VI secolo. All’interno di questi margini temporali, che vedono il progressivo esaurirsi della letteratura martiriale, prendono forma le tradizioni agiografiche destinate a condizionare maggiormente la sconfinata produzione letteraria intorno alla santità del Medioevo latino

No full textThe theme of the “angelic life” (angelikos bios), is of crucial importance for monastic anthropology of the early centuries. The hagiographical sources, in particular, present it from different perspectives: (1) the hermits themselves look like angels, (2) between angels and hermits there is a relationship of communion and solidarity, (3) the angels visit the hermits and this their movement is like a seal, to attest the authenticity of spiritual experience and the degree of perfection attained by solitary monks. This paper aims to explain the theological foundations of this monastic ideal, following the thought of John Chrysostom, Jerome and Eucherius of Lyon, and to review some episodes taken from the «Historia monachorum» of Rufinus, Martinian writings of Sulpicius Severus, the «Life of the Jura Fathers» and the hagiographical production of Gregory of Tours and Venantius Fortunatus
