Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brasil.Explicar as doenças é uma tarefa exercida, comumente, pelos profissionais da saúde, que as informam de acordo com os achados fisiopatológicos desenvolvidos no paciente. Para as pesquisas antropológicas e sociológicas, as interpretações, a respeito das doenças, podem variar entre sociedades, grupos e indivíduos, a partir da experiência de cada parte. Com o intuito de estudar as noções, a respeito de um episódio de doença e seu tratamento, empregadas por todos os envolvidos em um processo clínico, a antropologia médica americana criou a categoria dos modelos explicativos. Objetivo: A presente pesquisa tem por objetivo estudar o modelo explicativo das mães sobre a situação de adoecimento com fibrose cística de seus filhos. Método: Trata-se de um estudo qualitativo, em que foram realizadas entrevistas individuais semi-estruturadas, com dezesseis mães de crianças ou adolescentes, portadores de fibrose cística. A análise foi feita de acordo com a perspectiva fenomenológica e apoiada nas técnicas de análise temática. Resultados: As mães interpretam a fibrose cística segundo uma visão ampliada do adoecimento e comportam em suas explicações, além dos acometimentos físicos, os problemas sociais, econômicos e emocionais experienciados. Para isso, elas desenvolvem um conhecimento híbrido, que é produzido na articulação do saber popular com o saber técnico-profissional. Conclusão: As mães de crianças e adolescentes com fibrose cística desenvolvem uma carreira de cuidadoras de seus filhos, que precisa ser apoiada e relativizada pelos serviços de atenção terciária em saúde. A visão materna sobre a experiência de adoecimento crônico engloba vivências pouco estudadas pelo setor profissional. Esse setor precisa reconhecer, formalmente, o saber materno e agregá-lo ao seu, para oferecer uma atenção à saúde de doentes crônicos, no caso em tela, os fibrocísticos, que não conte apenas com a assistência técnica, mas, também, a afetiva e, assim, amplie as ações de acolhimento de base coletiva.Explaining diseases is a task performed, normally, by health care professionals, who report them according to pathophysiological findings developed in the patient. For anthropological and sociological research, interpretations regarding diseases may vary among societies, groups and individuals, based on their respective experiences. Aiming at studying the notions of a disease episode and its treatment, adopted by all those involved in the clinical process, US medical anthropology developed the category of explanatory models. Objective: This paper aims at studying the explanatory model of mothers regarding the advent of cystic fibrosis in their children. Method: This is a qualitative study, comprising semi-structured individual interviews with sixteen mothers of children or adolescents with cystic fibrosis. The analysis was performed based on the Schultz phenomenological perspective and supported by theme analysis techniques. Results: The mothers interpreted cystic fibrosis according to a broadened view of the disease and their explanations comprise, besides the physical effects, social, economic and emotional problems experienced. In this regard, they develop hybrid knowledge, produced as a combination of popular and technical professional knowledge. Conclusion: Mothers of children and adolescents with cystic fibrosis develop a carrier of caretakers of their children, which must be supported and viewed under a relative point of view by services of tertiary health attention. The maternal view of the experience of development of a chronically disease comprises experiences little studied by the professional sector. This sector must formally acknowledge maternal know-how and add it to its own, in order to offer attention to the health of chronically disease patients, in the subject case patients of cystic fibrosis, not counting only with technical assistance, but also with emotional assistance, thus broadening care actions of a collective base

No full textMartha Joyce Richardson Manning (1936-) is a 1973 Winthrop College graduate (Masters Degree) who was enrolled to further her career as a reading teacher at the suggestion of parents and school board members. Mrs. Manning was married the Reverend Jesse Franklin “Frank” Manning (1933-2006) and has three children at the time of her enrollment. Mrs. Manning discusses her professional life as well as her experience as a student in the education program at Winthrop. She talks about her professors, her rigorous class load, and the College president, Dr. Charles B. Vail (president from 1973-1982). Mrs. Manning graduated with a “Reading Teacher Award,” and took a test to receive a certification that allowed her to teach reading from elementary to college levels in South Carolina. She discusses how Winthrop helped her to further her passion for education.
