The main purpose of this dissertation is to poster an aulic poet that was at the service of Catarina de Áustria – Jorge Fernandes – virtually unknown in the specific bibliography, expanding, therefore, the corpus of Portuguese and Castilian renaissance poetry of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
The first part of this investigation focuses on the establishment of the author’s biography and historiographic context. This analysis allows not only to complete an understanding of the dimension of the queen’s patronage amongst poets and artists (besides her well-known attention to collecting), but to also examine and codify the academic education that this priest from the University of Coimbra might have had access to, after the reforms created by D. João III. Then, the collation of the author’s works and the establishment of a corpus enables a quest on Portuguese-Castilian bilingualism, in a time of fruitful cultural exchange, especially throughout the dual monarchy.
The core of the second part consists of a study regarding the ways of reading and absorption of the latin poet Horace in the poetry of Jorge Fernandes, seen as though he was the translator and emulator of the latin author. The analysis reveals the richness of the classic and contemporary culture of Fernandes, and demonstrates his integration in the entity of the sixteenth century’s peninsular literature
