Fergusson/Hamilton papers
No full textRobert Fergusson and Alexander Hamilton were buying agents for Scottish trading firms during the latter half of the eighteenth century. Both Fergusson and Hamilton were born in Scotland, but came to Maryland as young men and established themselves both as agents and as men of property. Fergusson owned Nanjemoy, an estate in Charles County, though he lived in Georgetown and later at "Mulberry Grove," also in Charles County, near Port Tobacco. Hamilton maintained a sizeable estate in Prince George's County, including more than ten slaves at the time of his death in 1799. The Fergusson/Hamilton papers date from 1761 to 1827, with the majority of documents dating from the 1780s and 1790s. The bulk of the papers consist of correspondence between Scottish firms such as Glassford & Company and their Maryland representatives Fergusson and Hamilton. Other documents include statements of debts incurred by planters and storekeepers with whom the agents dealt, records of the disposition of estates, and some agreements about the running of Fergusson's own estate. The collection also includes a number of legal writs from Worcestershire, England, and several drafted commentaries on a 1786 debate in the Maryland legislature on how to ease the post-Revolutionary War economic depression. The authorship and precise date of the political commentaries are unclear

No full textMap is a pictorial representation of Port Phillip Heads, showing the wreck of the Sacramento.; The Sacramento was a 430-ton net (447-ton gross) three-masted wooden barque built in Sunderland, England and owned by Teighe & Co. of London, having previously been owned by Pryde & Co. of Liverpool. It was captained by Captain William Holmes and was bound from London to Melbourne, carrying approxiamately 300 government immigrants. Reform, restructuring and rehabilitation: post-secondary education from the mid-1990s to 2010
No full textThe devastation of Cambodian culture and infrastructure since the 1960s has been the subject of in-depth and well-documented research; its legacy is a country who’s economic, health, justice, transportation, and education systems are in need of wholesale reconstruction. A number of useful historical and descriptive studies have focused on the rehabilitation of general pedagogy, curricula, teacher education and higher education in Cambodia. For example, Le Thac Can surveyed Cambodian higher education in the context of regional reforms in Vietnam and Laos, Sophal Ear considered educational development initiatives and their relation to Cambodia’s economy from 1953 to 1970, and Fergusson, Le Masson and Bonshek examined both the pre-1979 and 'postliberation' phases of higher education and teacher education in Cambodia. There remains, however, a distinct need for comprehensive analysis of the present conditions in Cambodia’s post-secondary education reconstruction efforts in order to better understand the country’s overall socio-political and economic development.
This chapter, written by Lee Fergusson and Michael King in 2011, was designed to fill this gap in knowledge and, as Tan Kim Huon, Sophal Ear and others have noted of educational reforms in Cambodia and other Asian nations, there is a significant and irrefutable link between the realities of educational decision making and policy development and the socio-political and economic state of a nation
