Classification of Karst Fenglin and Fengcong Landform Units Based on Spatial Relations of Terrain Feature Points from DEMs
In this paper, a method for extracting Fenglin and Fengcong landform units based on karst topographic feature points is proposed. First, the variable analysis window method is used to extract peaks, nadirs, and saddle points in the karst area based on digital elevation model (DEM) data. Thiessen polygons that cover the karst surface area are constructed according to the locations of the peaks and nadirs, and the attributes of the saddles are assigned to corresponding polygons. The polygons are automatically classified via grouping analysis according to the corresponding spatial combinations of peaks, saddles, and nadirs in the Fenglin and Fengcong landform units. Then, a detailed division of the surface morphology of the karst area is achieved by distinguishing various types of Fenglin or Fengcong landform units. Experiments in the Guilin research area show that the proposed method successfully distinguishes the Fenglin and Fengcong terrain areas and extracts Fengcong landform units, individual Fenglin units, and Fenglin chains. The Fengcong area covers approximately two-thirds of the whole area, the individual Fenglin area covers approximately one-fourth, and the Fenglin chain area covers approximately one-tenth. The development of Fenglin has different stages in the Guilin area. This study provides data support for the detailed morphological study of karst terrain, and proposes a new research idea for the division and extraction of karst landform units
Membrane life estimation in full-scale immersed membrane bioreactors
Limited quantitative available information exists regarding the robustness of
membranes used in immersed membrane bioreactor (iMBR) applications, and no
information on the relative contribution of the two main membrane failure modes
of permeability and integrity loss. Such information is crucial given the
significance of membrane replacement costs to the viability and sustainability
of iMBRs. Measurements of membrane permeability and integrity have been made on
flat sheet (FS) membrane cartridges sampled from six existing full-scale iMBRs.
The recovered membrane permeability (i.e. the permeability recorded following
chemical cleaning) revealed all plants operating for less than six years to have
a clean water flux greater than that of the virgin membrane cartridge. A lower
permeability was recorded only for the oldest plant (eight years of operation),
and this was attributed to high levels of phosphate scale fouling. Assigning a
linear trend between membrane permeability loss and operation time indicated the
recovered membrane permeability to reach a threshold minimum value for virgin
membrane cartridge after ∼7 years of operation. The membrane cartridge
integrity, as measured by the strength of the weld at its perimeter, correlated
with the total volume of water permeated per cartridge, the total weight of
NaOCl cleaning reagent to which the panel has been exposed, and the mean volume
of water permeated per cartridge between chemical cleans. In this case, the
linear trend indicated a membrane life equating to ∼900m3 per panel or exposure
to a total of 1.3kg NaOCl before the threshold minimum welding strength for
membrane cartridge was reached. As with the permeability data, only for the
oldest plant was the measured mean membrane integrity below the threshold. The
data indicate membrane life for FS iMBRs to exceed six years, on the basis of
both permeability and integrity, and may ultimately be limited only by the
irreversible deposition of inorganic scale, rather than operation
Recent advances in membrane bioreactors (MBRs): Membrane fouling and membrane material
Membrane bioreactors (MBRs) have been actively employed for municipal and industrial wastewater treatments. So far, membrane fouling and the high cost of membranes are main obstacles for wider application of MBRs. Over the past few years, considerable investigations have been performed to understand MBR fouling in detail and to develop high-flux or low-cost membranes. This review attempted to address the recent and current developments in MBRs on the basis of reported literature in order to provide more detailed information about MBRs. In this paper, the fouling behaviour, fouling factors and fouling control strategies were discussed. Recent developments in membrane materials including low-cost filters, membrane modification and dynamic membranes were also reviewed. Lastly, the future trends in membrane fouling research and membrane material development in the coming years were addressed. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

Distributed human computation framework for linked data co-reference resolution
Distributed Human Computation (DHC) is a technique used to solve computational problems by incorporating the collaborative effort of a large number of humans. It is also a solution to AI-complete problems such as natural language processing. The Semantic Web with its root in AI is envisioned to be a decentralised world-wide information space for sharing machine-readable data with minimal integration costs. There are many research problems in the Semantic Web that are considered as AI-complete problems. An example is co-reference resolution, which involves determining whether different URIs refer to the same entity. This is considered to be a significant hurdle to overcome in the realisation of large-scale Semantic Web applications. In this paper, we propose a framework for building a DHC system on top of the Linked Data Cloud to solve various computational problems. To demonstrate the concept, we are focusing on handling the co-reference resolution in the Semantic Web when integrating distributed datasets. The traditional way to solve this problem is to design machine-learning algorithms. However, they are often computationally expensive, error-prone and do not scale. We designed a DHC system named iamResearcher, which solves the scientific publication author identity co-reference problem when integrating distributed bibliographic datasets. In our system, we aggregated 6 million bibliographic data from various publication repositories. Users can sign up to the system to audit and align their own publications, thus solving the co-reference problem in a distributed manner. The aggregated results are published to the Linked Data Cloud

The primary entities in community medical activities are the community health service centers. Amidst the backdrop of new medical reforms, the community health service centers have continuously sought appropriate development strategies. The Fenglin Street Community Health Service Center in Xuhui District, Shanghai, has pioneered the "combination of general and specialized disciplines" model, merging general medicine with specialized disease management, which has significantly contributed to the advancement of core disciplinary areas and the enhancement of medical service standards. This paper provides a comprehensive summary of the "combination of general and specialized disciplines" practice in Fenglin, with the aim of offering insights and guidance to related grassroots medical institutions based on the findings
Intersystem soft handover for converged DVB-H and UMTS networks
Digital video broadcasting for handhelds (DVB-H) is the standard for broadcasting Internet Protocol (IP) data services to mobile portable devices. To provide interactive services for DVB-H, the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) can be used as a terrestrial interaction channel for the unidirectional DVB-H network. The converged DVB-H and UMTS network can be used to address the congestion problems due to the limited multimedia channel accesses of the UMTS network. In the converged network, intersystem soft handover between DVB-H and UMTS is needed for an optimum radio resource allocation, which reduces network operation cost while providing the required quality of service. This paper deals with the intersystem soft handover between DVB-H and UMTS in such a converged network. The converged network structure is presented. A novel soft handover scheme is proposed and evaluated. After considering the network operation cost, the performance tradeoff between the network quality of service and the network operation cost for the intersystem soft handover in the converged network is modeled using a stochastic tree and analyzed using a numerical simulation. The results show that the proposed algorithm is feasible and has the potential to be used for implementation in the real environment
