A novel flexible membrane boundary method based on color function in DEM simulations for triaxial tests of granular materials
No full textThis technical note presents a novel flexible membrane algorithm for DEM-based triaxial test simulations. Using color functions to calculate the normal vectors of membrane particles, the algorithm can model mechanical response of flexible membrane under large deformations and curvatures. It also uses imaginary particles to improve calculation accuracy of normal vector nearby high curvature area. After validation based on lab test result, the algorithm effectively reproduces the stress-strain behavior of specimens under triaxial compression, offering a more precise and reliable tool for studying the mechanical response of granular materials
KAJIAN FENG SHUI TERHADAP TEMPAT USAHA DI JALAN RUMAH SAKIT, TASIKMALAYA
No full textAbstract - All owners always wanted their business to go well, including those near hospitals, which had so negative energy that people would feel uncomfortable to be around for long. On Jl. Rumah Sakit, Tasikmalaya city, West Java province, there was a restaurant - RM Ny. King, which was on the opposite side of Dr. Soekardjo Hospital, but managed to maintain its business since the 1970s. There was also a 24-hour fried food vendor nearby and Kedai Bakso Solo Mas Wiji with T-junction position - a negative position according to Feng Shui - but both had lasted for more than two decades. Busy activities only seemed to occur where the three premises were, while others were not going well and mostly happened to pharmacies, which should have been able to sell well. This research was conducted to find out why only some businesses on Jl. Rumah Sakit (from in front of Kedai Bakso Solo Mas Wiji to RM King) were going well, according to Feng Shui studies, a knowledge that studied energy related to buildings. This research used the qualitative descriptive approach and tested all buildings in Jl. Rumah Sakit. For analysis, basic theories of Feng Shui, Form Theory, Five Elements Theory, Four Celestial Animals Theory, and Water Theory were used. In addition, Market Area Location Theory was also used to see the tendency of people to shop in the premises. It was concluded that the segment between Kedai Bakso Solo Mas Wiji until RM Ny. King had the most buildings that follows the Feng Shui theories used in this research. That is the reason why activities were more concentrated in this segment rather than others in Jl. Rumah Sakit.

Di Jl. Rumah Sakit, kota Tasikmalaya, provinsi Jawa Barat terdapat sebuah rumah makan - RM Ny. King yang tepat berhadapan dengan Rumah Sakit Dr. Soekardjo, tetapi dapat mempertahankan bisnisnya sejak tahun 1970 an. Terdapat pula pedagang gorengan 24 jam di dekatnya dan Kedai Bakso Solo Mas Wiji yang memiliki posisi tusuk sate sebagai posisi negatif menurut Feng Shui, namun keduanya sudah bertahan lebih dari dua dekade. Aktivitas ramai terlihat hanya terjadi di segmen jalan ketiga tempat tersebut berada, sedangkan tempat usaha lainnya, terutama apotek-apotek, yang seharusnya dapat berjualan dengan baik. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui penyebab hanya sebagian dari tempat usaha di Jalan Rumah Sakit (segmen jalan di depan bangunan kedai Baso Solo Mas Wiji hingga bangunan RM Ny. King) yang ramai pelanggan, menurut kajian Feng Shui, sebagai salah satu cabang ilmu yang mempelajari energi yang berhubungan erat dengan bangunan.Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif dan dilakukan pada seluruh bangunan permanen dan non-permanen di Jl. Rumah Sakit. Untuk analisis, digunakan teori dasar Feng Shui, Teori Bentuk, Teori Lima Elemen, Teori Empat Binatang Langit, dan Teori Air. Selain itu, teori Lokasi Market Area juga digunakan untuk melihat kecenderungan masyarakat untuk berbelanja di area objek studi. Dari analisis yang dilakukan, ditemukan bahwa dari seluruh segmen, segmen Kedai Baso Solo Mas Wiji hingga RM Ny. King memiliki paling banyak bangunan yang memenuhi teori yang dipilih. Hal ini dapat menjadi penyebab terkonsentrasinya kegiatan pada segmen tersebut di Jl. Rumah Sakit.

A novel approach to detect hot-spots in large-scale multivariate data
No full textBackground: Progressive advances in the measurement of complex multifactorial components of biological processes involving both spatial and temporal domains have made it difficult to identify the variables (genes, proteins, neurons etc.) significantly changed activities in response to a stimulus within large data sets using conventional statistical approaches. The set of all changed variables is
termed hot-spots. The detection of such hot spots is considered to be an NP hard problem, but by first establishing its theoretical foundation we have been able to develop an algorithm that provides a solution.
Results: Our results show that a first-order phase transition is observable whose critical point
separates the hot-spot set from the remaining variables. Its application is also found to be more successful than existing approaches in identifying statistically significant hot-spots both with simulated data sets and in real large-scale multivariate data sets from gene arrays,
electrophysiological recording and functional magnetic resonance imaging experiments.
Conclusion: In summary, this new statistical algorithm should provide a powerful new analytical tool to extract the maximum information from complex biological multivariate data
JL-3 isolated from “Jiangshui” ameliorates hyperuricemia by degrading uric acid
No full textRecent studies into the beneficial effects of fermented foods have shown that this class of foods are effective in managing hyperuricemia and gout. In this study, the uric acid (UA) degradation ability of Limosilactobacillus fermentum JL-3 strain, isolated from “Jiangshui” (a fermented Chinese food), was investigated. In vitro results showed that JL-3 strain exhibited high degradation capacity and selectivity toward UA. After oral administration to mice for 15 days, JL-3 colonization was continuously detected in the feces of mice. The UA level in urine of mice fed with JL-3 was similar with the control group mice. And the serum UA level of the former was significantly lower (31.3%) than in the control, further confirmed the UA-lowering effect of JL-3 strain. Limosilactobacillus fermentum JL-3 strain also restored some of the inflammatory markers and oxidative stress indicators (IL-1β, MDA, CRE, blood urea nitrogen) related to hyperuricemia, while the gut microbial diversity results showed that JL-3 could regulate gut microbiota dysbiosis caused by hyperuricemia. Therefore, the probiotic Limosilactobacillus fermentum JL-3 strain is effective in lowering UA levels in mice and could be used as a therapeutic adjunct agent in treating hyperuricemia

Black Holes from Colliders and Cosmic Rays
No full textUltra-high energy cosmic rays create black holes in scenarios with extra dimensions and TeV-scale gravity. In particular, cosmic neutrinos will produce black holes deep in the atmosphere, initiating quasi-horizontal showers far above the standard model rate. At the Auger Observatory, hundreds of black hole events may be observed, providing evidence for extra dimensions and the first opportunity for experimental study of microscopic black holes. If no black holes are found, the fundamental Planck scale must be above 2 TeV for any number of extra dimensions
Iron Regulation of Hepcidin Despite Attenuated Smad1,5,8 Signaling in Mice Without Transferrin Receptor 2 or Hfe.
No full textBACKGROUND & AIMS: HFE and transferrin receptor 2 (TFR2) are each necessary for the normal relationship between body iron status and liver hepcidin expression. In murine Hfe and Tfr2 knockout models of hereditary hemochromatosis (HH), signal transduction to hepcidin via the bone morphogenetic protein 6 (Bmp6)/Smad1,5,8 pathway is attenuated. We examined the effect of dietary iron on regulation of hepcidin expression via the Bmp6/Smad1,5,8 pathway using mice with targeted disruption of Tfr2, Hfe, or both genes. METHODS: Hepatic iron concentrations and messenger RNA expression of Bmp6 and hepcidin were compared with wild-type mice in each of the HH models on standard or iron-loading diets. Liver phospho-Smad (P-Smad) 1,5,8 and Id1 messenger RNA levels were measured as markers of Bmp/Smad signaling. RESULTS: Whereas Bmp6 expression was increased, liver hepcidin and Id1 expression were decreased in each of the HH models compared with wild-type mice. Each of the HH models also showed attenuated P-Smad1,5,8 levels relative to liver iron status. Mice with combined Hfe/Tfr2 disruption were most affected. Dietary iron loading increased hepcidin and Id1 expression in each of the HH models. Compared with wild-type mice, HH mice demonstrated attenuated (Hfe knockout) or no increases in P-Smad1,5,8 levels in response to dietary iron loading. CONCLUSIONS: These observations show that Tfr2 and Hfe are each required for normal signaling of iron status to hepcidin via the Bmp6/Smad1,5,8 pathway. Mice with combined loss of Hfe and Tfr2 up-regulate hepcidin in response to dietary iron loading without increases in liver Bmp6 messenger RNA or steady-state P-Smad1,5,8 levels
