Hedonic Prices and House Numbers: The Influence of Feng Shui
In contemporary practice, feng shui incorporates a wide range of concepts considered to affect a person’s luck. These include traditional ideas about site selection and building design, as well as newer beliefs about the “luckiness” of certain numbers. Focusing on an area with a relatively high percentage of Chinese households in Auckland, New Zealand, this paper uses hedonic price analysis to investigate whether house values are affected by lucky and unlucky numbers. Sales transactions for 1989 to 1996 are used in this analysis. The results demonstrate that lucky house numbers are capitalised into house values.Feng shui, hedonic price model, lucky, New Zealand
Neighborhood component analysis-based feature selection in machine learning to predict tendon ultimate stress of unbonded prestressed concrete beams
Precisely estimating tendon ultimate stress in prestressed concrete beam members while accounting for the impact of various structural parameters holds practical significance in Structural Engineering. Existing approaches in design codes often rely on simplified empirical formulas, frequently falling in accurately representing outcomes across diverse conditions. This paper proposes a novel application of ensemble learning to predict tendon ultimate stress, leveraging relevant parameters identified through Neighborhood Component Analysis (NCA). NCA is strategically utilized for feature selection, enhancing prediction performance and reducing computational cost. An innovative integration of Gradient Boosted Regression Trees (GBRT) with Bayesian optimization for hyper-parameter tuning is introduced, trained, and validated using a robust database of 251 experimental results from simply supported prestressed concrete beams, encompassing a wide range of conditions and structural configurations. The study employs Individual Conditional Expectation (ICE) analysis to elucidate the correlation between input variables and predictions, providing deeper insights into parameter influence. Additionally, the GBRT model is benchmarked against state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms, including Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Decision Trees (DT), and Random Forest (RF), demonstrating a good prediction accuracy with R2 of 0.9330. Detailed correlation analysis and benchmarking results highlight the robustness and reliability of the proposed model, underscoring its potential to improve the design of prestressed concrete beam members and offering a significant improvement over traditional empirical approaches

Z(c)(4025) as the hadronic molecule with hidden charm
We have studied the loosely bound D*(D) over bar* system. Our results indicate that the recently observed charged charmonium-like structure Z(c)(4025) can be an ideal D*(D) over bar* molecular state. We have also investigated its pionic, dipionic, and radiative decays. We stress that both the scalar isovector molecular partner Z(c0) and three isoscalar partners (Z) over tilde (c0,c1,c2) should also exist if Z(c)(4025) is a D*(D) over bar* molecular state in the framework of the one-pion-exchange model. Z(c0) can be searched for in the channel e(+)e(-) -> Y -> Z(c0)(4025)(pi pi)(P-wave) where Y can be Y(4260) or any other excited 1(--) charmonium or charmonium-like states such as Y(4360), Y(4660), etc. The isoscalar D*(D) over bar* molecular states (Z) over tilde (c0,c2) with 0(+)(0(++)) and 0(+)(2(++)) can be searched for in the three pion decay channel e(+)e(-) -> Y -> (Z) over tilde (c0,c2)(3 pi)(P-wave)(I=0). The isoscalar molecular state (Z) over tilde (c1) with 0(-)(1(+-)) can be searched for in the channel (Z) over tilde (c1)eta. Experimental discovery of these partner states will firmly establish the molecular picture.http://gateway.webofknowledge.com/gateway/Gateway.cgi?GWVersion=2&SrcApp=PARTNER_APP&SrcAuth=LinksAMR&KeyUT=WOS:000327092600003&DestLinkType=FullRecord&DestApp=ALL_WOS&UsrCustomerID=8e1609b174ce4e31116a60747a720701Physics, Particles & FieldsSCI(E)19ARTICLE11null7

B -> eta K-c(eta ' K-c) decays in QCD factorization
We study the exclusive decays of the B meson into pseudoscalar charmonium states eta(c) and eta(c)' within the QCD factorization approach and find that the non-factorizable corrections to naive factorization are infrared safe at leading-twist order. The spectator interactions arising from the kaon twist-3 effects are formally power suppressed but chirally and logarithmically enhanced. An important improvement by including the O(alpha(s)) corrections is the cancellation of the renormalization scale mu dependence of the decay amplitude. However, the calculated decay rates are too small to accommodate the experimental data. On the other hand, we compare the theoretical calculations for B meson decays to J/psi, psi', eta(c) and eta'(c), and find that the predicted relative decay rates of these four states are approximately compatible with the experimental data.http://gateway.webofknowledge.com/gateway/Gateway.cgi?GWVersion=2&SrcApp=PARTNER_APP&SrcAuth=LinksAMR&KeyUT=WOS:000223097800007&DestLinkType=FullRecord&DestApp=ALL_WOS&UsrCustomerID=8e1609b174ce4e31116a60747a720701Physics, Particles & FieldsSCI(E)17ARTICLE3365-3703
Gabosines L, N and O: New carba-sugars from Streptomyces with DNA-binding properties
In addition to the known gabosines A (4), B (5) and C (6), three new gabosines L (1), N (2) and O (3) were detected by chemical screening as secondary metabolites of Strep- tomyces (strains GT 041230, GT 051024 and S 1096). The constitutions of 1, 2 and 3 were established by spectroscopic techniques and derivatization reactions. The absolute stereochemistry of 1 and 2 was determined by Helmchen's method and has been verified in the case of gabosine N (2) by X-ray analysis. The DNA-binding properties of the gabosines were investigated and analyzed by binding studies using a recently developed thin-layer chromatography technique (bimolecular-chemical screening)
