The dissertation Piano works of Klement Slavický introduces a topic which has not been elaborated until now. Klement Slavický (1910 - 1999) was one the most significant Czech composers of the 20th century and his piano works substantially enriched the literature of the instrument. His piano works can be divided into two categories: the first consists of concert pieces, and the second of instructive pieces. The theme of the composer's piano works is introduced in the biography, where the author deals with life and work of Klement Slavický with special emphasis on his piano opuses. The chapter is loaded with historical data and information. The topic of the dissertation is thus set within a wider context essential for deeper insight into the research topic. The part devoted to concert works of Klement Slavický deals with the circumstances and the processes whence his works originate and, subsequently, with their paths to interpreters and listeners. It brings a detailed compositional and interpretational analyses enriched by the author's own experience on concert stages and in recording studios. The composer's instructive opuses are analysed in terms of the educative and hermcneutic approaches. Based on her own empirical research comprising a sample of over 30 pupils and students, the author creates a..

Characterization of fuzzy measures constructed by means of triangular norms

    No full text
AbstractFollowing the ideas presented by the author (E. P. Klement, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 85 (1982), 543–565) finite T-fuzzy measures are introduced, T being a measurable triangular norm. We show that a T-fuzzy measure is always a fuzzy measure, as considered earlier (E. P. Klement, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 25 (1980), 330–339). Then we study the relation to the integral with respect to some classical measure. Finally, for some special triangular norms T, we give precise characterizations of the corresponding classes of T-fuzzy measures

The thesis is an overall view over translation of African American Vernacular English (AAVE) in the novel The Help by an American author Kathryn Stockett and in the translation Služkinje by Dušanka Zabukovec. Main purposes of the thesis are to present literary translation, standard and non-standard language, introduce dialect, sociolect and idiolect and the translation of those lectsintroduce AAVE: its socio-linguistic context and its origin, AAVE in literature and its general characteristicsget familiarized with the American author Kathryn Stockett and her work The Help and the translator Dušanka Zabukovec with the translation Služkinjefurthermore, introduce socio-historical setting of the original novel, plot summary, main themes and language in the novel. Purposes of the second part of the thesis are to introduce the methodology for observation of translation and present the comprehensive analysis of translation of characteristics of AAVE in the original and translated textand explore, define and support as many examples of characteristics of AAVE as possible. The analysis performed in this thesis has shown that characteristics of AAVE from the original novel are not maintained in the translation and that emotional and psychological reaction of an American reader and a Slovene reader are not the same, since language – AAVE – plays a significant role in the original text. The last part of the thesis presents some solutions and suggestions to maintain or, at least, show the existence of characteristics of AAVE in the Slovene novel Služkinje.

The main purpose of the thesis is to present the author, her life and work, analyze her work and place the author into the context of Slovene literature. The analysis includes the short and long prose. Eight short storiesLjubimec – Lover from the series Razkriti obrazi svobode – Disclosed Faces of Freedom (2014), seven short stories from the series Nočne pokrajine – Night Landscapes (2014), and three novelsthe debut Koža iz bombaža – Cotton Skin (2007), V visoki travi – In the Tall Grass (2009) and Sušna doba – Dry Season (2012), are presented and analyzed in the thesis. The graduation thesis defines terms, such as Slovene literature, Slovene postmodern, novel and contemporary Slovene novel, short story, intertextuality. Structural elements of literary works (contextmotif, theme and ideaexternal and internal structure of a literary work – postmodernistic metafiction, narrator, characters, literary time and space, language and style) are defined. The literary analysis of each author´s work is performed according to the structural elements of a literary work. Several different methods have been used in the thesisdescriptive method, classification method, the method of analysis and interpretative method, comparative and historical method and the method of synthesis. Prose works of Gabriela Babnik are interculturalshe presents the contact between real Slovenia and real Africa. The thesis presents motifs, themes and ideas of each individual prose work of Gabriela Babnik, which tend to occur in each Babnik´s work. The author deals with degradation of stereotypes, with dysfunctional, empty and alienated relations between the closest peoplewith the acceptance and non-acceptance of otherness and distinctiveness in the real Western and real African societies and with the »Lepa Vida« complex (Lovely Vida complex). Characters and their characteristics are presented in the thesis. Woman, which becomes too alienated or too possessive due to the patriarchate or traumatic past, has the main role in Babnik´s works. Literary time and place, language and style, are presented in the thesis, whereas literary place covers Africa, Slovenia, France and England, while language and style tend to be similar in all Babnik´s literary works. Intertextual methods that modify the internal and external structure of the prose of Gabriela Babnik are defined

The Limits of Dissent: Clement L. Vallandigham and the Civil War

    No full text
Every American war has brought conflict over the extent to which national security will permit protesters to exercise their constitutional guarantee of freedom of expression. The most famous case was that of Clement L. Vallandigham, the passionate critic of Lincoln’s Civil War policies and one of the most controversial figure in the nation’s history. In the great crisis of his time, he insisted that no circumstance, even war, could deprive a citizen of his right to oppose government policy freely and openly. The consequence was a furor which shook the nation’s legislative halls and filled the press with vituperation. The ultimate fate for Vallandigham was arrest, imprisonment, and exile. The burning issues raised by his case remain largely unresolved today. Frank L. Klement follows the tragic irony of Vallandigham’s career and reassesses the man and history’s judgment of him. After his death, Valiant Val’’ became a symbol of the dissenter in wartime whose case continues to have relevance in American democracy. Frank L. Klement, professor of history at Marquette University, received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin. He is the author of The Copperheads in the Middle West, Wisconsin and the Civil War, and numerous articles dealing mainly with the Civil War in a variety of historical journals.https://uknowledge.uky.edu/upk_united_states_history/1068/thumbnail.jp

    Klement Bochořák: personality and work

    No full text
The wistful poet Klement Bochořák (1910-1981), who decided to struggle for a poetic expression full of reconciliation and gratitude despite his "bitter maturing", belongs to the generation of "Spring Poetic Almanac". This author mentally resonated with impulse s coming from literature (Čep, Halas, Zahradníček, Mácha, Erben) and also from other inspiring areas (music, visual arts, folklore). He is usually considered to be one of catholic writers, a meditative lyricist of spiritual nature. The form of his work evokes concepts of Franciscan humility, tenderness, compassion, idealization, reflections of traditional folk Catholicism, and also the importance of connection with the specific region, i.e. the area surrounding Kunštát in Czech-Moravian Highlands. The said region forms a horizon of his poetic expression; it constitutes a literary space of homeland, the desired place, paradise on Earth. Bochořák inc1ines to an archetype of pilgrim; in the Čep's line he represents the poetry of dual home, being a poet of matutinal vision. In this work I focus (with respect to biographical details) on the introduction of Bochořák's literary work in its complexity, which encompasses not only his poetry, but also short prose, books for children, editorial work and translations (marginally). I shortly interpret these texts..

Construction of Fuzzy σ-algebras using triangular norms

    No full text
AbstractGeneralizing the definitions given by the author [Fuzzy Sets and Systems4 (1980), 83–93] we introduce and study T-fuzzy σ-algebras, T being any triangular norm. The main result is that for a large class of triangular norms each T-fuzzy σ-algebra is generated, i.e., consists of all functions μ:X → [0, 1] being measurable with respect to some σ-algebra on X

    The Dutch PV Portal 3.0

    No full text
The Dutch PV Portal is a website on photovoltaic (PV) energy generation in the Netherlands, developed within the Photovoltaic Materials and Devices Group (PVMD) of the Delft University of Technology. A version 2.0 was launched in 2018. The core of this website is an online PV system performance calculation model which involves three main functionalities: (i) a figure with a breakdown of the real-time system efficiencies, (ii) a national solar electricity production (NSEP) estimate, and (iii) an analysis of the economics for several types of PV systems. The goal of this Master thesis project was to create a Dutch PV Portal (PVP) version 3.0. The first part of this project involved investigating the vision and the purpose of this PV modelling website, as well as evaluating the performance calculation model of the version 2.0. A user-centered approach was followed to better understand the needs of one identified target group using this website: anyone who considers to opt for a PV system at a certain location. This means that, besides adding new features and upgrading the scientific models, also attention was paid to improving the usability of the website. Next to this, the potential of the NSEP model to perform large-scale sensitivity studies was researched. The Dutch PVP 3.0 contains several new design possibilities. A flat roof design option is implemented, the orientation (portrait/landscape) of the PV modules can be specified, an input option for row-to-row distance in field and flat roof designs is added and a design possibility for an East-West setup is created. Furthermore, the performance calculation model now contains a model that calculates the system's self-shading loss for field of flat roof designs: a so-called mutual shading model. Other new features are a load model that estimates the PV system size based on a specified yearly electricity use and a system size model that calculates a layout of the PV array based on the system size input specified by the user. A first validation study of the overall performance model for tilted roof designs found that the calculated energy values deviate between -10% and +5.4% from measured values of 26 real systems. The usability of the Dutch PVP is improved by implementing a framework that considers how the performance model fits within the bigger picture of the 'PV system design process'. It resulted in a step-by-step, responsive user interface that aims to better guide the user through multiple stages of this design process, and that relates to several identified questions they have in mind. An improved visual appearance contributes to this. The future application possibilities of the NSEP model were found to be promising, but many more research and professionalization is needed in order to create a large-scale research tool based on this model. The results of an executed sensitivity study with this NSEP model show first estimates of the quantitative impact of changing climate on the national solar electricity production
