Richardson, Barbauld, and the construction of an early modern fan club
No full textMPhilMuch has been written about the life and long works of the eighteenth century epistolary novelist, Samuel Richardson, but the prospect of his position as the first celebrity novelist – responsible for courting his own fame as well as initiating his own fan club – has largely been ignored. The body of manuscripts housed at the National Art Library in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London provides the modern scholar with evidence of the skeletal beginnings of an early fan club. This thesis aims to show how these manuscripts were turned into a saleable commodity by the publisher and entrepreneur Richard Phillips, while under the guiding hand of another, slightly later, literary celebrity, Anna Laetitia Barbauld. In order to restore Richardson’s reputation amongst a new nineteenth century audience, Barbauld was required to construct her own idea of him as an eighteenth century celebrity author, and in doing so the insecurities of a self-professed, apparently diffident man, are revealed. Barbauld’s capacious, but heavily edited selection of letters is analyzed in this thesis, providing ample evidence that Richardson’s correspondents were more than just eager letter writers. By using Barbauld’s biography of Richardson this thesis aims to show how she manipulates the genre of life writing in her construction of him.
This thesis offers an alternative reading of how the Richardson manuscripts are viewed, redefining them as not simply a collection of letters, but as a collective entity, deliberately selected and archived as evidence of an early modern fan club, and its celebrity managing director

of Influences: A Lexicon of Contemporary Graphic Design (Die Gestalten Verlag, 2006) with Anja Lutz. She writes regularily for magazines such as Print, Eye, Creative Review, Varoom and Idea Magazine and her work has also been published in shift!, dot dot dot and +rosebud.
She teaches at the London College of Communication on the BA Graphic Design and MA Design Writing Criticism programmes. She has also held workshops and lectures across the U.K. (including Tate Modern and the V&A Museum), as well as in India, the U.S., Australia and Malaysia.

Speciallärarprogrammet grav språkstörning, Institutionen för skolutveckling och ledarskap, Lärande och samhälle, Malmö universitet, 90 hp. Förväntat kunskapsbidrag Det förväntade kunskapsbidraget i denna studie är att ta tillvara och vidareförmedla de erfarenheter och upplevelser elever i språklig sårbarhet har av stöd i skolan. För att elever i språklig sårbarhet ska ges bästa möjliga förutsättningar att nå skolframgång är det avgörande att de som arbetar med och kring dessa elever har tillräckliga kunskaper om vilket stöd som eleverna upplever är betydelsefullt för dem i skolan. Syfte och frågeställningar Syftet med studien är att bidra med kunskap kring hur grundskoleelever i språklig sårbarhet upplever stödet de får i skolan. 1. Vilket stöd upplever eleverna att de får i skolan? 2. Vad upplever eleverna som betydelsefullt för dem i skolarbetet? 3. Hur beskriver eleverna sin delaktighet i det stöd de får i skolan? Teori Det övergripande teoretiska perspektiv som valts för studien är ett sociokulturellt perspektiv på lärande som innebär ett synsätt grundat på att lärande och utveckling är en process som sker i en social kontext där individen samspelar med sin omgivning. Empirin speglas även genom relationskompetens som fokuserar på det som sker människor emellan. Andra teoretiska ramar som är intressanta för valt fokusområde är KASAM, delaktighet och kategoriskt kontra relationellt perspektiv på specialpedagogik. Metod Studien är att betrakta som hermeneutisk då den syftar till att söka förståelse snarare än att finna ”sanningen”. För att kunna besvara frågeställningarna har semistrukturerade, kvalitativa intervjuer genomförts med utgångspunkt i en intervjuguide. Urvalet av medverkande var målstyrt där ett så kallat snöbollsurval har använts. Sex respondenter intervjuades och empirin har tolkats genom innehållsanalys. Meningsbärande innehåll från empirin har grupperats och kategoriserats för att identifiera centrala teman och budskap. Resultat Studiens resultat visar att lärarens bemötande och förmåga att skapa goda relationer är avgörande för elevernas lärandeprocess. Lärare som visar engagemang, förståelse och acceptans för individuella förutsättningar skapar trygghet, motivation och tilltro till egen förmåga bland eleverna. För att skoldagarna ska upplevas välfungerande uttrycker eleverna ett behov av anpassningar i form av visuellt stöd, tydliga instruktioner och begreppsförklaringar. Eleverna initierar ofta själva den efterfrågade hjälpen i skolan och de upplever varierad grad av delaktighet i utformandet av stödinsatser i skolan. Specialpedagogiska implikationer Studien pekar på bristande likvärdighet när det gäller lärares bemötande, vilka anpassningar som erbjuds och elevers delaktighet i utformandet av stöd i skolan. Speciallärarens roll för att säkerställa att eleven involveras och att gemensamma förhållningssätt, arbetsmetoder och stödstrukturer arbetas fram är således viktig. Skolan behöver ta ett större ansvar för att identifiera elever i språklig sårbarhet och öka kunskaperna kring hur dessa elever stöttas på bästa sätt. I detta arbete kan specialläraren utgöra en nyckelperson för kunskapsspridning, samverkan och utformande av tillgängliga lärmiljöer.
